Don't mind it. Somebody always seems to get a minor smidgen of acclaim for being the first to give a newcomer that phrase. -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

Well, the problem is that Space Invaders, though arguably graphically and technically superior, does not equal Kill Bad Aliens. We want the latter! :P As far as my programming goes, though, it is rather sloppy, and I don't use hardly any comments. Sometimes a bug takes a while to find, and it invariably turns out to be some stupid obvious error I overlooked about a hundred times. I should definately listen to Jeff sooner rather than later. I just finished making an ASCII connect four game (which I am very proud of), but I'm now migrating to the wonderful world of DirectX and graphics. Wish me luck. -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

Of course, he uses the engine of earlier games in making his new ones, with minor modifications. This allows him to focus more on the actual storyline and less on the game's actual workings. -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

Yes, I agree. They should at least have some more effective shortcuts to quickly gain experience once you get a high level in a skill. Don't mind me, though; on with the RPG talk. -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

Did anybody mention Runescape yet? It's fun but addicting, and for me, it's become boring once I have to mine 15 inventories of iron just to gain one level. But I haven't played very many of those new ones, including World of Warcraft, which Jeff himself seems to be a huge fan of. -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

Hmmm. Now that I've played a little bit, having no sounds can be a little annoying. Having no sounds also translates into having no pauses in the gameplay when a sound would have normally been played (e.g. if a monster dies it just suddenly disappears). So I'd like to know how to fix this, but if not, that's fine; at least it's playable now. EDIT: Oh n/m, it turned out, after a little online searching, was I had a sound card driver problem. Thanks anyway. [ Friday, May 11, 2007 16:39: Message edited by: Sturg ] -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

Well, well, what do you know. I experimented with the preferences, and once I turned the sounds off, the game worked perfectly! That's wierd; Vista quirk perhaps? :P Thank you, BtW. -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

I tried temporarily disabling real-time scanning, which didn't speed up the game and running it in compatibility mode didn't do much either. How do you turn off the indexing service? Also, you're right: the new look is just a small part of the hype about Vista. I think people use it just because it's seen as the "new generation of Windows", though it really not all that different from XP. -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

Hi again folks, I recently got Windows Vista (pretty cool-looking, by the way), and I installed all the Exiles. However, they all run very slowly, even though the game speed is set on 'fastest'. Avernum works fine. Why might this be? -------------------- -ben4808 Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |
