Andorra's somewhere between France and Spain, right?

... (checks wikipedia)

Yup. And it has no income taxes.

Ah, I see Lego's ego is getting inflated by the discussion... or am I misreading the new moniker?

quote:

Ephesos: Handing out jobs is good, I agree. But why have the government give out jobs when you could just cut taxes so that businesses can hire more people themselves? New Deal legislation was government regulation to fix the economy after government regulation had already screwed up the economy with tariffs. It was a special situation.
Because I'd rather see the government use the vast resource that is unemployed Americans to fix up the broken parts of the country. Fix some roads, clean up some schools, replant some forests...

Cutting taxes will just allow businesses to make more obscene profits with the same numbers employed. Not to mention the fact that even if they do hire more people, it will be to their own end and not one that benefits the country (unless you're predictably focusing on the economic angle). And if I hear a single reference to trickle-down economics used as a counter-idea, I'll scream.

And Lego, the Great Depression was a worldwide depression. The world economy just burned out after WW1. So it wasn't caused by tariffs. It was simply the fact that everyone's economy hit the red at the same time.

Nioca, it's just that Lego's idea is more flawed than most others I'm aware of. Thus, I feel perfectly fine criticizing it.

Seconded. At least, that was the hardest major quest. My fighter just kept dying to fiery touches... he could deal enough damage to kill Grah-hoth fairly quickly, but so could Grah-hoth. It was one of the most challenging Avernum fights I can remember.

Eventually, it worked, though. Slow is your friend.

Rushing is relative... three weeks, however, was just insane. Three weeks from basically nothing to everything. So if you've already got a fair amount done, the deadline is completeld doable.

For the moment, I'll just stick to my part of the argument here... the rest got spontaneously more complex. Anyway...

quote:
Originally written by Lego:

Ephesos: Answers do vary, as they do with any theory. Honestly, do you have an answer that works every time? I'd like to hear it.
That's a cop-out, and you know it.

quote:
Originally written by Lego:

Yes, class stratification is the way to go. It promotes a greater work ethic... (screeching halt)
Perpetuated despair and failure do not promote a good work ethic.

quote:
Originally written by Lego:

...if the government was giving out hand outs, what reason do people have to work hard or even keep a job?
I'm thinking New Deal legislation here... let the government hand out jobs. But I kind of agree with you here. Hand outs are bad. Handing out jobs is better.

quote:
Originally written by Lego:

As for satisfaction, if the teachers are satisfied with their pay (which is what we were talking about), then there is nothing to argue about here.
Yes there is. You said they were weak for lacking ambition. I maintain that they're strong for sticking with an underpaid, underappreciated job which forms an integral part of society.

quote:
Originally written by Lego:

Finally, compassion is for the weak. Where did compassion ever get anyone? It hurts not only the compassionate, but also the compassionees, as they will not work as hard if given the things they need.
Hm... in that case... DIE.

I feel stronger already. :P

(For the record, I'm all for calling one's statements and ideas idiotic, and do my level best to keep that separate from what I think of the person. So Lego, I don't think you're an idiot. I don't necessarily think you're a bad person. I'm just not sure I'd be able to listen to you talk in person for very long without vomiting.)

XxX, I strongly suggest that you try to work with Blades of Avernum for a while. It's a good way to get an idea of how much work the design process is on even a small scale. That makes it less of a shock once you realize how much more work it takes to make a game from scratch.

It'll also help you refine your story-telling skills.

You're trying to give yourself a cheap way out of any of your definitions with the debate equivalent of "answers may vary", that's what.

...blah blah economic justice blahblahblah...
So... class stratification and general misery in a significant portion of the population is best for society? If I am wrong in this derivation, please correct me.

Complacence? What about satisfaction with one's life? What about not feeling the need to struggle past an already comfortable existence?

I have a serious problem with your "manipulation skills = strength" theory. It shows a total lack of compassion in your views.

FYT, sorry.

Research is incredibly important for everyone who makes the "important" discoveries. Newton's "standing on the shoulders of giants" quote comes to mind. Granted, some of it becomes pork, particularly if the "weak" get involved, as I imagine you think.

Basically, I agree with Kel. Your definitions keep changing, and your sudden inclusion of luck is just a little evasive.

Explain your concept of justice, please. It'll help sort out all of this semantic lunacy, particularly your willingness to excuse it by including luck as a variable.

XxX, I don't quite understand why you're posting this here. I mean, it's nice that you're making a copyright-infringing low-quality game and all, but where does this board enter into it?

What did you mean by making this a poll, anyway?
