Stories like that either give me a lot of hope for humanity, or just think that it's all a wash, and people will be whatever they feel like at the time. I'm not sure which.

Actually, I'll just go with the sentiment that it's quite trippy.

Ah. You weren't supposed to do that. When they said they'd attack anyone who ventured into the city, they meant it.

It's completely possible to sneak by the shade without being seen, and escape through the sewers. Just so you know next time...

I don't think there's a way to revive an entire town like in previous Avernums...

What on earth drove you to slaughter the entire town?!

Wait... I think I know when you did this. Was this when you came up through the smugglers' tunnel, and popped up right next to the shade? Because there's a way out of Almaria there that doesn't involve killing everyone.

Finally, the A4 forum... I can do some damage there.

RETRIBUTION!!!

EDIT: As I've said before, I love my role in this... and I personally can't wait to bust out the Balms of Life at the end of the war. I mean, if the noobs can revive their troops and/or turn them into zombies, why can't we cast Return Life?!

Come to think of it, once we hit the A4 forum, I wouldn't even need Balms of Life anymore. My SP would increase tenfold, and I could just cast Return Life until everyone was back...

Impressive work. I never really liked Hardiness as an ability, though... needing 20 to make a significant difference seems overly steep.

What about different levels of Hardiness, say 5/10/15?

From the fact that we haven't seen High Hoper in quite some time, I think it's safe to assume that they've either:

1) Begun work on the epic already.
2) Given up and gone for something smaller.

or, most likely

3) Got bored and gave up completely.

OoC: Finally, a perspective change.

IC:

Staring at a workbench full of a night's failed work, Sister Elmleaf knew she had a few options.

She could leave the prisoners securely anchored to the rear wall of the temple's infirmary. They'd have no chance to do damage there, and she was seriously worried about the Hunters' capabilities. She could administer a lethal dose of hemlock and make things easier for everyone. She could loosen their chains, and yell for the guards to stop them. With a sigh, she realized that she'd probably just keep trying until something worked.

Why did Clearwater send these destructive fools to me? she thought, trying to think of something she'd forgotten to try.

Mind-clearing spells had failed. Her most advanced healing and curing spells did nothing save irritate them. Restoration Brews had done nothing. She was running out of ideas, and she was beginning to worry about the fools tearing their chains out of the walls.

Out of desperation, she dropped a sprig of lambswool (an herb native to Krell, reputed for its fluffy white sepals) into a flask of spring water, and swished it around for a while. While the herb soaked in the water, she watched the racist brutes fume and strain.

When it was done mixing, she motioned to the warrior who stood guard in the infirmary with her. The staff-wielding warrior stepped up to the Hunter prisoners, and knocked one over the head with his staff. The man slumped over unconscious, and the rest suddenly quieted down. Without interference, the warrior unchained the unconscious prisoner, and brought him over to Elmleaf. She poured the potion down his throat, and cast a quick spell to awaken him.

The prisoner sputtered, and groggily sat up. The attendant warrior readied himself, and kept his staff roughly a foot away from the prisoner's skull.

And then, the prisoner broke down crying.

----------------

Brother Clearwater was again seated before the Council when the messenger from the temple arrived. He unrolled the scroll slowly, expecting the worst, but a smile slowly spread itself across his face. He dismissed the messenger, then turned to the Council.

"Friends, the Hunters are as good as defeated. We have found the antidote to their mental magic. A simple sprig of lambswool seems to be enough to counteract the Hunter leader's persuasive abilities."

According to the scroll, the prisoners had all either broken down crying upon realizing what they'd been doing, or remained eerily silent while Sister Elmleaf filled them in. Two had vomited upon learning the truth. One had confessed to supporting the Hunters' goals, but had refused to carry out a massacre ordered by a superior. After a personal talk with Tygra, he had carried out orders without flinching.

"In any case, we will turn this cure over to the Guild, who can infiltrate the Hunters and start freeing the people. From what we can tell, the herb also bestows a degree of resistance to mental influences, so the Hunters will be hard-pressed to reconvert all of their 'loyal citizens' at once."

"But that brings me to our next order of business... we have been contacted by the Guild, and they wish to start an all-out war with the Hunters."

Immediately, the emissaries from Ouracasos and Ysanto objected. Others started arguing, and Clearwater had to shout to regain order.

"Friends, wait. We have to do something soon. Maybe not now, but can we at least agree that we will support the Guild in its actions?"

Tentative nods.

"Okay, we can worry about sending troops later, but for now, we can send them the cure to the Hunters' advances. So then let's move on to other matters, such as reestablishing contact with Woodsmuir."

The emissary from Isidar rose to speak. "I received a message via carrier pigeon from Isidar today. Aparently, a ship from Woodsmuir docked in the harbor of Trilka, and claimed to represent the new Woodsmuir government."

"Go on." Brother Clearwater said once the emissary had stopped.

"Well, from what they've gathered, the former capital is now run by a group of rebels. The old officials have been either killed or exiled to the jungles, and a certain King Accis has begun calling himself the new Emperor of Vantanas. My troops told the ship's owners otherwise, with extra pikes added for persuasion's sake."

"Did they say anything about Accis' goals?"

"Well, he has supposedly tried to distribute the wealth of the city equally among all citizens, or at least the ones who survived the revolution. This plan hasn't worked so well, but he's pursuing it quite adamantly. The rebels are trying to bring the surrounding lands under their control, and have met with intense resistance from native tribes and former Empire citizens alike. They seem content to rule Woodsmuir, despite the king's boasts."

"Well, it seems that we must begin negotiations with this 'king'. I shall send a small group of warriors and priests, and any contributions from your troops will be appreciated." Brother Clearwater said, hoping for others to volunteer. I don't necessarily want to divert too many of the Order's men right now... defense must be our number one priority.

Fortunately, Rincon of Eos raised a hand. "I'll have some guards here within the week, Brother."

Others followed suit, and Brother Clearwater was happy to see a rough group of maybe a hundred warriors, guards, and priests form before his eyes. The republic of Tanan agreed to lend some archers to the cause, and the Numindian emissary even agreed to lend a mage. Brother Clearwater was intensely pleased.

"Well then, I believe we have done enough work for tonight. I hereby dismiss the Council, with the hope that we can meet again tomorrow."

And with that, most of the Council drifted off to the Floundering Crow.

Not to mention Hrickis, Kravvit-Bok, and everywhere west of Fort Remote. In fact, surrounding far too many of the high-level villains in the game.

This is pretty self-explanatory. Direct all future OoC posts here, so we can avoid cluttering up the real thread with everyone's OoC arguments.

Topics currently up for debate:
-Aran's maps, and the accuracy thereof.
-The controversial dating of posts.

I'm against post-dating, but I like the maps. My one gripe is the size of Vantanas... but that's been discussed already.

I have to agree here. Honestly, as much as it reminds me of Discworld's Librarian (which makes me laugh), I'll gladly switch my acronym to DoK. After all, that's been the abbreviation in its BoA context.

I also dislike the idea of dating posts. It would definitely cause far more squabbling than good. But for clarity's sake, my posts have been a stretch of ≈3 days, all about two weeks after the assassinations.

(That said, some people are definitely jumping ahead of themselves and everyone else, and counting that as a "surprise attack")

For the record: Please direct the OoC conversations HERE. It'll save a lot of confusion and clutter...

I find that Hardiness gets very little use in my games... I really prefer Defense and Dexterity (and thus, Parry). Spreading those skills around helps greatly.

That, and Gymnastics can be quite helpful.

Well, it's a lot of work to get Blademaster. But it's powerful. But you're already getting levels of it, so... maybe not.

Train in Parry. It's good. And Defense and Dexterity are very good things to train in even if you're not reaching for Parry...

IC:

The meeting was interrupted when the group was planning out lines of contact. One of the lower-level priests, Brother Cirrus, burst through the heavy oak doors, panting heavily.

"Brother Clearwater! The scrying pool... come quick!" he gasped out between breaths.

---------------

He had feared this. The Order had tried to establish a temple in Valorim in the year 1108. The effort had failed, but the priests stayed on in Kriszan.

... and they had kept their scrying pool intact.

Clearwater stood by the pool, helplessly watching the scene unfold before his eyes. The Order's scrying pool revealed a scene of devastation in what remained of the Kriszan temple. A few priests lay dead by their scrying pool, and he could see rough-looking soldiers moving about the edges of the image, which was slowly growing fuzzy.

A tear began to form in the druid's eye. He could hear faint voices, fading away as the connection between pools failed. Somebody shouting triumphantly above the groans of the dying... "Another victory for the Hunters!"

Soon afterwards, the connection failed, and Clearwater was left in the now-silent room with Brother Cirrus.

"What now, Brother Clearwater?"

Clearwater just stood there, trying to regain his composure.

---------------

There was no way he could continue the meeting. He sent Brother Redscale to fill in and continue planning, while he retired to a vantage point on the walls.

---------------

The sun was rising over the horizon when Brother Clearwater awoke. A messenger was gently nudging him with a staff.

"Brother Clearwater, a message from the Guild."

Clearwater groggily took the scroll he was offered, and rubbed his eyes in the hopes of adjusting to the sunrise's light.

Brother, we have a task for the Order. We have run up against a group of homicidal maniacs on the south coast of Valorim. They call themselves the Hunters, (Brother Clearwater gasped and fully awoke upon reading this) and they are bent on the slaughter of all non-humans, and have a strange power over the people there. We have reason to believe it is due to some form of mental magic, and we had hoped you could find a way to dispel it.

Recently, we "apprehended" a group of the Hunters' soldiers who appear to be under this magic's influence. We felt it necessary to send them to you. They should arrive around the time this message does.

Also, we have been pointing refugees from the Hunters' advances towards mainland Vantanas and your islands. We expect that you're willing to provide asylum to them.

Best of luck,

The Guild

Brother Clearwater rolled the scroll back up, and handed it to the messenger. "When did this arrive?"

"About the same time that a ship from the Guild pulled into Oakton, Brother. I believe that is the ship that the message spoke of."

Great. More to worry about... at least I can send them to Sister Elmleaf. She'll know what to do, he thought. Sister Elmleaf was the premier healer of the Order.

"Send the prisoners to Sister Elmleaf, and escort them with a full guard of priests and warriors," Brother Clearwater said grimly. "I need to speak with the Council."

"As you wish, Brother."

---------------

By midday, Brother Clearwater had assembled the Council of emissaries in the upper Hall again. Sister Elmleaf had reported no progress yet, and had had to forcibly restrain the prisoners three times. Good thing I sent the guards with them...

He had learned from Brother Redscale that last night's planning meeting had been very unproductive. Few could agree on how to re-establish contact with Woodsmuir, most preferring to convince others to risk their garrisons and ships. No matter, the Council would remain here as long as necessary.

"Friends," Clearwater said to the assembled leaders, "We have a problem. A new menace is rising on the coasts of southern Valorim. I am dismayed that our first renewed contact with another continent has turned out like this, but it seems that the Hunters are bent on destroying the non-humans of Ermarian."

The slith emissary from Skarrifisk and the nephil emissary from Tanan recoiled in horror.

"As much as I hate to say this, I feel that we will be forced to enter a state of war. They have even sought out representatives of the Order and brutally slain them in their takeover of Kriszan. For the peace of Vantanas and Ermarian, we must prepare to defend ourselves from the Hunter menace!"

A few murmurs of disagreement sounded.

"It will not be our first priority, I assure you. Our immediate goal remains the same: re-establish the peace of Vantanas. But we are already accepting refugees from the Hunters' invasions, and we fear that they may strike in our area one day."

The emissary from Laessos spoke. "And what if they do attack us?"

Brother Clearwater smiled grimly. "We will fight them. And we will win."
