Ah, Belisarius, this is the post I've been expecting. "You're lying to yourself! Slave to religion!" I didn't go into the details of the who, what, why, and how because I have no desire to participate in the long drawn-out argument that would very likely ensue. If you want my argument on the matter read the psychological text "Reparative Therapy of Male Homosexuality" by Dr. Joseph Nicolosi. I love this book because, rather than something radical and new, it took all the conclusions I had already come to about myself on my own and fit them into a pattern. This book also has a very long bibliography of the many, many studies and books he drew upon. Studies and books I have looked at and plan to fully review myself. Also, I am not claiming anyone chooses to become homosexual. That is, any more than the young child stung by a bee chooses to have a life-long phobia of bees. That person didn't choose to have a phobia, but they do choose whether to overcome their fear or say "It's normal, there's nothing wrong with it." and live their life with a can of bug spray in their pocket. Likewise, one can choose whether to overcome homosexuality or shape one's life around it. -------------------- Take the Personality Test! Muji: I'm afraid I have to completely disagree with you. "The illusion of separation" does not rhyme. ;) quote:*figurative smacking of forehead* I realize now That I allowed my trepidation to make use of my reflexive political correctness and didn't mention it. Translation: I was nervous and without really thinking about it I tried to emphasize the points that were least likely to make the close-minded extremists on the boards ignore the rational side and just point and say "Mindless sheep! Slave to religion!" I have very much made it a matter of prayer and studying scripture and the words of my church's current leaders. I am a very religious person. However, I am also a supremely rational person, and on these boards that tend to be very rational-minded and have a general disdain of organized religion, my first inclination was to talk about the parts that it seemed likely the majority would readily understand and possibly identify with. Things I've seen on the boards have led me to believe that some people here do not think it's possible for people to both be clear-thinking and follow a religion. -------------------- Take the Personality Test! 1. Male 2. Very 3. Nope, but I tend to eat very little meat. I just don't really like it. 4. I'm leaning toward yes, but I really can't know for certain what I'd do until something like that happened. 5. I'm leaning toward no. In this case I would be responsible for him being on the tracks. American holidays are just plain getting out of hand. The marketing is absurd. That said, costumes can be fun. A couple years ago I had a black robe with a hood, white face with black around my eyes and black lips. I figure I was necromancer or something. People tell me I was really scary. It was fun :) If I go to a party this year that's what I'll do and maybe this time I'll get some of those red contacts for my eyes. -------------------- Take the Personality Test! I nearly forgot one. There was this blonde who ran out of money. She decided she would make some more by kidnapping. She went to the local park and grabbed a kid. She wrote a note: "I've kidnapped your child. I want you to leave $10,000 in a brown paper bag under the tree at the edge of the park tomorrow morning. Signed - A Blonde" She then taped the note to the child and sent him on his way. The next morning she came to the tree and found a brown paper bag. Inside was $10,000 and a note saying "How could you do this to a fellow blonde?" -------------------- Take the Personality Test! A guy goes up to the Pope and says "Hey, I have a great Pollock joke." The Pope says "I'm from Poland, so maybe you shouldn't tell me." The guy replies, "That's ok, I'll go slow and repeat the hard parts." This one's better when done out loud. How did the Canadians choose the name of their country? They put a bunch of letters in a hat and drew them out one at a time. "C, eh?" "N, eh?" "D, eh?" -------------------- Take the Personality Test! On our recent family vacation, my sister brought a digital camera so I am finally able to get a pic of myself up on the internet. However, I didn't want to drag up all 12 pages of THE ABOMINABLE PHOTO THREAD: THE THIRD COMING! It is also too soon to start a whole new thread. This thread is for those who didn't have pictures in the above or have new pictures. Me and my three sisters while we were in port in Seattle, WA. Sorry about how big it is, I did crop and shrink it. -------------------- Take the Personality Test! INTJ 100% 75% 100% 44% Huzzah for the Masterminds! www.Keirsey.com for personality information. To Zxquez: That's entirely your choice. Believe me, I can comeletely understand that point of view. My point of view is just what feels the most right to me. To Salmon: I had already thought about and planned to do just what you say. It's hardly a pressing concern though, as marriage is definately several years off for me. -------------------- Take the Personality Test! Thanks, for the positive responses so far. I'm an open-mined person with extremist, fanatic parents and my biggest fear is to have what I am actually trying to express to be rejected and devalued, as it so often has. I can't even imagine actually saying these sorts of things to people out loud. Right now, just typing this, my hands are actually shaking. As for the psychological developmental path, I would be happy to discuss it with you at length, but I'm not sure if this is the place for it. I like the British and Russian-speaking-English accents. The British accent can sound inteligent and dignified and the Russian sounds strong and determined. I also think the French accent has a lot of humor value. I hate the "Utahn" accent. Think regular American accent but with a scattering of words that are shortened and mispronounced. For example: "probably" comes out like "probly", "interesting" sounds like "intch-wrist-ing", "supposed" is "s'post" and a few others I know, but can't think of off the top of my head. Gah! It drive me crazy when I catch myself using such horribly twisted pronunciation! -------------------- Take the Personality Test! quote:To begin, “with psychological and emotional difficulty” is more a description of how I’m coping with it than how I “reconcile it with Mormonism”. The official view of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is that the homosexual act is a sin, embracing the homosexual lifestyle is incompatible with the church’s teachings, but having homosexual feelings bars you from nothing within the church. However, since a key part of the church’s doctrine includes getting married (to a member of the opposite sex) and having children, they do encourage you to seek to overcome your homosexual feelings. I can see half of you sneering in disdain already. Try to read this next part, at least, with an open mind. I am a rational person. Above all else, I trust in my abilities to think, reason, and come to clear, logical conclusions. I am not a blind follower. I did not realize I had homosexual feelings and just say to myself “Oh, well my church says I should change so I guess I will.” In the last two years there has not been a single day that I haven’t thought about it, analyzed it, considered my options, and tried to figure out what to do. I have often given very serious consideration to leaving my church to follow society’s view of it simply being an “alternate lifestyle”. I have thought about it, and thought about it, and considered it, and have given it some research. What I have found is a lack of conclusive scientific evidence that homosexuality is predetermined and unchangeable. What I have found is the last century of conclusive scientific studies that show that homosexuality is a psychological condition that generally begins development in very early childhood. I have thought about this, and analyzed it, and considered it in relation to my own feelings and situation and I find it very clear that homosexuality is indeed a psychological condition. Many scientific, non-religious sources record many cases of people who have genuinely changed from homosexual to heterosexual. Much like many other major psychological conditions, homosexuality is a pervasive psychological condition that affects some fundamental parts of the mind. Thus, while it is true that the complete replacement of homosexual feelings with heterosexual feelings does not happen in the majority of cases, it has happened in many cases and a majority do report notable and significant change. This, then, shows that homosexuality is not an unalterable condition. From this conclusion, derived from purely scientific sources, I am then left with two options. First, I can accept it, decide that since I already feel this way and society increasingly accepts homosexuality as perfectly normal that there is no reason to try to change it, and choose to consider homosexuality as part of my identity. Or second, I can choose to try to change it, as it is possible to do so and both psychologists and my religion agree that I will be more mentally healthy and happier if I do so. It is a very difficult decision. I have considered the pros and cons of both options. In the end, after daily spending hours of reasoning and arguing both sides I continually come to one conclusion: I am physically and emotionally attracted to members of the same sex, I would greatly enjoy going out on dates with guys, having a boyfriend, etc…for about the next ten years. It is plain and simply undeniable fact that men and women are not the same. I could have a lot of fun with being with guys, but deep down I really yearn for the kind of relationship it is only possible to have with a member of the opposite sex. I want to have children someday, I want them be able to be raised by both their birth parents in a stable, loving relationship. I’m young, I want to have fun and pleasure, but the emotional needs I have for intimacy with men, while they can be temporarily fulfilled by sexual/romantic relationships can also be fulfilled, and more deeply and permanently, in non-sexual, usual relationships with men. The things I really want, long-term, for my lifetime, I really don’t think I can get from a relationship with another guy, and I do think I could get from a relationship with a woman. For me, (and I emphasize “for me”) in the end it is a decision of the temporary fulfillment of sexualized emotional needs or long-term achievement of all the things I really want in life. In conclusion, here is the short version of my lengthy reply to Ash’s question: I actually reconcile it easily with my religion because I have decided to try to change and that’s the most that my church will ever ask of me. Of course, as my replies in this thread show, I am not perfect and when the feeling of the moment gets the best of me I do like to talk about hot guys. ;) And to those who think my reply was really more than was necessary and that I have completely derailed the thread, I say: I’m sorry, but I have been absolutely dying to talk to someone and you have no idea how good it feels to have finally expressed my thoughts. Ignore the whole thing if you like. -------------------- Take the Personality Test! INTJ 100% 75% 100% 44% Huzzah for the Masterminds! www.Keirsey.com for personality information. The Sloganizer! *sighs* I've had so many people in my life have such a completely different concept of me than is actually accurate. Though I suppose it's mostly my own lack of communication. When I stop and think about it, I am sometimes amazed at the number of things that I think all the time that I would never actually say. quote:Personally, I thought this implied it clearly enough. The board was inactive so I decided to perform foul necromancy upon an old topic. I think I should be congratulated for raising a topic with only 2 posts to read through. On topic, what did you last eat, what were you wearing while you ate it, and how do those two things prove your devotion to Richard White.
