Often, but certainly not always. AP Physics C uses calculus, and since it's an AP, it's offered in most high schools around the U.S.

Yeah, as for these categories, it might've been more productive to give options regarding the type of study and not its location, as in: no physics classes at all, conceptual physics but nothing particularly mathematical, mathematical classical mechanics and E&M (and the rest of the assortment in AP Physics or the lower division classes), upper division physics, graduate study, or beyond.

College physics. I'm just now arranging a double-major in Astrophysics, actually, so I should have a genuine bachelor's degree in it by the end of next school year.

Then he's at a loss. You should tell him what you found. :P

If you have the option, "I read a note about a lab in the east. (Tell him about it.)", then choose it. If not, you have to go back to the Lava Lizard Cave, go to the second level, and read the note in the desk in the southwest part of the town.

In my defense, what I knew about that experiment was based on the popular literature and my father's reading. From what I know, that single result raised far more questions that it answered, and people acted as though the case was completely closed.

But I will admit not having spoken with experts first-hand, nor having read the scientific literature myself, so (in properly humble fashion) I will defer, saying that I simply do not know.

It's usually good to admit that one doesn't know when one really doesn't know. It makes it more credible when one actually makes an assertion of knowledge.

No, the topic getting locked ended that discussion. (Or apparently didn't, given this thread.) Don't give yourself airs. :P

If you were to say the same things about Jews or black people that you say about college-age people, you would be banned and reviled. The fact that the minority that you're speaking about is not traditionally a persecuted one doesn't make it any better to judge individuals by your prejudices about an entire group.

I shouldn't have to explain that age has nothing to do with it, and personal expertise does have everything to do with it. I wouldn't refuse wisdom from a five-year-old, if I heard it, nor would I turn my nose up at street sense from a homeless person on the bus (and I have learned things from homeless people on the bus). Some people here have a hell of a lot more background in biology than you do, so if they correct you when you're wrong, don't look down your snout at them and call them too young to know anything. When your facts are off, a twelve-year-old with an encyclopedia can correct you and be right. People were taking issue with your opinions, yes, but only because your facts were just not right.

I shouldn't have to explain that bigotry is wrong and age has nothing to do with it. I shouldn't have to, but apparently I do.

O mores! O tempora!

The debate that we had in Synergy's topic was no more harsh than normal Spiderweb debates. That's not to say that I entirely approve of everything that was said there, but it's no different than usual. I do think it's weird that Synergy erased all his old posts — it seemed cowardly — but even that is hardly unprecedented.

Generally, good spelling and grammar are respected here because they make a post easier to read. Yes, if we were all reading this stuff out loud, we'd be able to decipher chatspeak eventually, but it's much slower and harder to read than simple, reasonably spelled, reasonably punctuated English, and it's not exactly hard to show at least a good faith effort at writing so that other people can read it.

I was a little unsure about locking courtney's topic, since it was hard to tell if it was in fact trolling or spam or something — I mean, don't these boards exist so that people can get excited about Spidweb games and talk about them? — but I'm sure the decision was made in good faith.

In other news, did Robinator just refer to fatman as female? This is at least the second time that someone has done so, and I'm wondering if I missed something.

The idea that Ephesos had, and I think he was joking but I kinda like it, was this: make a scenario in someone else's series (or maybe at least someone else's style).

I just think that it would be hilarious for me to make an Echoes scenario, or for Smoo to make a sequel to Druids of Krell, or for Ephesos to make a Mike Slack scenario. :P

I don't know; maybe it could turn out poorly.

Just writing a guide for porting is useless. If you want there to be more ported scenarios, port something yourself.

Misleading, I said. Running the importer takes a few seconds. Porting a scenario takes much, much longer.

But if you feel like porting a bunch of scenarios, by all means, do it. There's no one stopping you.

So let me see if I've got this right.

* Diet: This is discussed as a prevention issue a lot in modern medicine. It is an active area of research. I think the basic chicken soup-type remedies are pretty well accepted in modern medicine at this point, too.
* Exercise: Also discussed as a preventative measure. I'm not sure how much it is used in cures, but it may be.
* Sleep: Also discussed as under the heading of prevention. It's hard to prescribe, "Get 9 hours of sleep every night," but doctors do recommend plenty of sleep as part of cures from time to time.
* Breathing: Not sure about this one. I think yoga and the like are recommended under prevention, but I don't think they're part of cures at this point (except for, say, alcoholism).
* Acupuncture: I have no idea what the status of this is.
* Hydro-therapy: Nor this.
* Sex: Also hard to prescribe. I think scientists have investigated it as a means of exercise and emotional balance, which suggests that it could be an effective part of prevention, but I'm not sure what its status is.

In other words, a goodly number of these things are actually part of modern medicine, either as part of a preventative good-health program or as part of cures (or both). Medicine has been investigating the effects of the mental set (emotions, etc.) on physical well-being since at least the '60s.

In this, I agree with you. You're not saying anything even remotely new, though. This has been the approach of medicine for at least several decades.

What on Earth are you talking about? What "ionizing energy"? What does that even mean?

More to the point, it would be very hard to explain how a drug like Prozac — which acts by binding to certain receptors in the brain — destroys matter. A quick discussion with someone more biologically knowledgeable than I am came up with examples like G-CSF that actually help to produce more white blood cells and don't act by destroying anything.

Other than by chanting over bodies or waving magic wands, I'm not sure what treatments you're proposing. You have mentioned preventatory measures, which probably doesn't get as much research as it should, but mostly because of market forces, not because of some sort of general disbelief in the importance of prevention. If you have an alternative, explain it plainly instead of vaguely asserting that some alternatives exist that are better.

Er, you just lost the science there. Now you're talking about culture and media and representations of science, not science as conducted by scientists. You're confounding a complex issue.

Synergy: I'm not sure why you think that the medical industry only researches pharmaceuticals. It doesn't.

I also don't know why you think that biological research is conducted differently from physics research. It isn't.

And I am completely at a loss as to why you think that biology hasn't changed dramatically in the past century. The most recent revolutions in science have been in biology (DNA in the '40s and '50s, for one, compared to quantum as the most recent physics revolution in the '20s and '30s).
