quote:Well, these calculations are good approximations in certain circumstances. It's just that there are a lot more circumstances out there. The single most positive experience I have ever had in a lab — in fact, the only positive experience I have ever had in a lab — was the very first lab of high school physics, right after we learned the equations of motion. We had a ball bearing and a Hot Wheels track on a table, and we were supposed to roll the ball bearing down the track, measure its speed somehow, and predict where it would land when it rolled off the table. Then we put a small cup, just barely larger than the ball bearing, on the spot where we thought the ball bearing would hit. Lo and behold, it worked. With just the equations of motion, we were able to predict where a ball bearing rolling off a Hot Wheels track would actually land. It was probably the greatest confirmation of basic science that I have ever seen. So these calculations do work in a particular variety of circumstances. It's just that thing can get a lot more complicated. In that case, I think that basic, Newtonian physics is a good thing, as long as the teacher states fairly regularly, "And there's a heck of a lot more that one could consider here, but it doesn't factor into the situations that we're looking at." Besides, what else would you do? Try to teach statistical mechanics or advanced mechanics to someone who hasn't even seen F=ma? -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I've considered the idea before and repeatedly decided that it'd be interesting to try if I had a really compelling reason to implement it, but the scenario should be designed in such a way that it works. Because otherwise it would be really, really annoying. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. As I recall, the original goal of the first re-make was to implement a palette system for placing items and creatures (like what exists for floors and terrains, or, better, what Notus was trying to do). How difficult would that be to implement? "Dikiyoba the Dikiyora" is totally natural and perfect, but I'm trying to think of what "Dikiyoar" reminds me of. quote:Definitely no. That's the best part. Here's another sonnet. I wrote it four years ago and have always sort of thought of it as being called, "Your Love is Like a Jamba Juice." The stars that fell from heaven to her hair, Themselves they sprinkled evenly throughout, And now they glisten bright without a care, Betwixt the flaxen strands that drape about. The precious gemstones of the earth, The aquamarine and the sapphire hues, Did melt into her eyes with mirth, Supplying none but deep and lustrous blues. But all the roses extant could not aid In soft creation of her lips; Her loving kisses must be only made Of sweetest berries’ juice and drunk in sips. For quickly saccharine will turn their touch; Her love a drink -- I must not drink too much. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Pretty much all of those things (knife, clock) could be purchased together for less than $100 total, even if you're buying reasonably good ones. I don't know how any of those gadgets would even make a dent in a $2000 budget. I'd be interested to know how you're arriving at your cost estimate, there. And, fortunately, I think that $2,000 per combat-zone soldier is not prohibitive on a military budget.
