What if God gives us free will and allows us to do what we want with it? We may do evil, but that's our choice. Why doesn't God intervene? He is infinitely superior and intervention goes against the divine plan. Theology has wrestled with this question for a long time, and all the best anwers boil down to our inability to comprehend what is best in the long run from our non-omniscient perspective.
This is one of those age-old questions that bugs me, because it seems nonsensical under the usual constraints. An omniscient and omnipotent god in a deterministic universe would know enough at the moment of creation to be certain how things were going to work out, so free will is a cop-out for evil in the world: this god created everything knowing full well what we were going to do and could've created things differently if he didn't want evil to exist.

In order for free will to matter, God has to be not omniscient (which I think is how people tacitly used to reconcile this long ago) or not omnipotent (there's Satan, struggling against him), or the world has to be probabilistic, not deterministic (at the moment of creation, there was a finite probability of some evil arising, and God just minimized the expectation value of the evil function over the lifetime of the universe).

Synergy, will you do me a favor? Paraphrase the point that I made in my previous post. I'm pretty sure that whatever you think I said is not at all what I actually said, but in order to know for sure, I have to know what you think I said.

The "The boards are not any worse" theme is quite familiar, I realize. The "That's why they're increasingly boring" one is not as much.

My sneaking suspicion is that these boards are always the same, but the SW-type conversation seems fresh and new to people who are new to it and starts seeming stale and old to people who have been here for a while.

The boards get less interesting to people, but I think they get less interesting simply because reading the same sorts of things over and over again gets less interesting, not because the stuff itself changes at all.

One nice thing about Australian geography is that everyone pretty much lives in one corner of the continent, so Aussies would not have too much trouble meeting each other if they felt like it.

One of these days, I'm going to run into Zeviz IRL and not know who he is, because I don't know his real name. My real name is all over these boards, though, so I'm assuming that he'll know me, and I'm hoping that he'll at least say, "Hey, by the way, I'm Zeviz."

All of you know where I live (or can pretty easily figure it out), so my answers are probably pretty obvious. One of these days, though, because of work, I'm going to end up in New York, and I'll finally get to meet one particular lovely Dominican in person.

Thuryl is old-school. There was a time in the history of the community, long ago, when people were far too subtle to tell someone directly that his post was too stupid to deserve a reply. They would, instead, post the entire lyrics of "Mr. Blue Eyes" in French to indicate that there was nothing good to be said. When Thuryl posts something that seems trivial in reply to a post of yours, his action means more than you might think.

It is worth noting, too, that, in a marked difference from the past, the ones who tend to be hardest on newbies these days are in fact newbies. People with member numbers far higher than mine were the ones giving Iffy a hard time in the most recent thread.

As for meta-posting, well, the community has always talked about itself. The community has always had in-jokes (e.g. the trifecta of terror that I think consisted of Khoth, Saunders, and Riibu and had something to do with a large number of slimy things).

You're just getting old, Alec. All these newbies of what I've called the fourth generation aren't very much like you. They don't make frequent reference to AbT (but rather Diki's story). They don't make reference to the Arena (but rather BoA). In short, their in-jokes aren't your in-jokes, so you feel that much more like an outsider, because that's what in-jokes do: they include some and exclude others.

Well, my general feeling is that this is what the community is now. Take it or leave it.

EDIT: Khoth, Saunders, and Arctic. I knew I had one of those people wrong. Well, two Brits and a Finn, anyway.

We also have to remember that "fittest" doesn't necessarily mean "best" and that evolution may produce things that are very good at surviving but not necessarily situations that are ideal for everyone involved. People who have followed SoT's reasoning in the past have forgotten this, with rather dire consequences.

Hmm. That was not the response I expected, but it was far better than the one that I expected. I applaud you, Kyrek.

I wonder if Garrison found my replies gut-ticklingly ill-intentioned in this thread, too, despite the (again) remarkable lack of anger.
