Eh. We could reasonably make it to Alpha Centauri someday. Getting to the nearby solar systems is not in principle out of the question. Relativistic speeds are achievable, albeit with enormous amounts of energy, and while getting to Alpha Centauri is a long trek even at relativistic speeds, it's not beyond the bounds of reason.

Still, there are a couple of major difficulties. Spaceships traveling at relativistic speeds are still impossible in practice with current technology, so getting out of the range of the Sun is not likely soon.

But other, more pressing, problem is: what the heck do we do once we get there? Even presuming that we brought along either terraforming technology (yeah, right) or a small livable environment (a dome with breathable air, say), we still rely on our local astrophysical conditions for basic daily needs. Dismissing day and night — we could simulate that via lights, I suppose — and any sort of solar energy usage, we nevertheless need the Earth for gravity. Even relatively small differences in planet mass (between, say, Earth and Mars) are noticeable in daily life and impact our bodies in strange and generally deleterious ways.

Put another way, to the best of my understanding, we need another planet that has almost exactly Earth's mass in order to be able to live on it. Atmosphere can be simulated, and we can probably mine for most of the stuff that we need (though water would be nice), and even proximity to a star is optional, but gravity is pretty much a must, and that's hard to come by.

My PDN rarely goes through permutations. I went through a "Just Call Me Kel" phase (because everyone was spelling the damn name "Keladon" or "Kaledon" or something stupid like that. I also (due to a conversation with, er, I forget who) passed a phase of being "Malakos the Freshly-Plowed" (it's a Biblical reference).

But anyway, this was my original name.

My point was simply that the fact that some people are damn fools cannot itself be blamed on Albert A. Gore. With respect to the phrasing, as noted above, blame the uncharitable sentiment on general irritation.

But damn it, Synergy, you can't have it both ways: either you care about this discussion (in which case your flippant attitude with respect to what you've written and how people read it is fake) or you don't (in which case you shouldn't be getting pissed off in the first place).

I cannot agree. Every human being on this planet, whether you deem them an idiot or otherwise, is my concern. It would be a shame if even just one person believed and was misguided by some of Al Gore's "science," based on the perception of favorable reception and credibility his film has received.

Eh, chalk the uncharitable sentiment up to general irritation, but you haven't actually addressed the point: People didn't start moving en masse away from the coasts solely on Al Gore's say-so. In fact, probably no one did.

There has not been a mass exodus away from the coasts. Your concern is hilarious, not least because anyone who performed the actions that you describe would be an idiot anyway and not worth your concern.

Also, by "the press," you presumably mean a particularly small segment of the left-wing press. You will note that the press is considerably more diverse than this, and you are making a patently false generalization.

The point is (yet again) that his conclusions are not in doubt. The overwhelming mass of evidence is overwhelming. If there are hundreds of facts, any one of which is convincing on its own, and roughly ten of which are unverified, there are still hundreds of convincing facts.

This is why making arguments via redundant evidence is useful: you have fall-backs in case some of the evidence is eventually discredited.

Eh... drawing attention to the minor errors in the film has its place, I guess, but, as was duly noted in the articles you linked, the main thrust of the argument is not at all in question.

Get into the river travel and don't rush. Do as much as you can along the journey. It's pretty cool when you realize that you're going somewhere you've never seen before, and your sorrow at leaving Avernum can be mitigated by the fact that you're going to return.

It was the coolness of Dark Waters that made me want to make Exodus (a BoA scenario that is basically a gigantic river journey).

And enjoy A2. It's probably the finest of the original Avernum Trilogy (although they each have their merits).

BoA doesn't handle poetry well at all. I guess I should've done dialog boxes, but that requires stanzas of no more than six lines each, and the verse was basically continuous. I should've just forced it into stanzas, but at the time, I couldn't bring myself to kill my darlings enough.

Text bubbles are good for little things. I like most of the handling of text bubbles in Exodus (major narrative shifts via text bubbles, rest of narration in dialog boxes). They were excessive in Bahs, though.

Text bubbles add a lot to cutscene time. That's the main problem with them.

I found out the hard way that no cutscenes should ever be longer than 1 minute (not counting dialog box reading time) or have more than 10 seconds of uninterrupted stuff without a dialog box to break it up.

This was a neat idea in BoE, because cutscenes were novel and technically challenging at the time, but it's not as great in BoA, because they're a normal part of the game.

My first post bemoaned the idiocy of not separating fanfic from canon, which some *cough* *Drakefyre* *cough* are in the habit of failing to do.

It's pretty remarkable how direct my path was from the beginning. Right around that time, I started work on Bahs, and my threads pretty much said what I was going to do.

I do still check this site from time to time. I'll probably be around a little more in a month or two, but this semester has really killed me with work and stuff.

But if anyone would like to organize the bugs list or create a new post that covers more, there's nothing stopping you. The only reason my post is the definitive one right now is that it's the only effort anyone has made to be comprehensive.
