I liked Tom & Jerry and other such cartoons in my childhood, but pretty much only enjoyed the extremely rare episodes where Tom actually got the better of that damn impish rodent. I'm from Oak Park, Illinois, right next to Chicago. From my house, it's about a fifteen minute drive to downtown Chicago. The town is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of Ernest Hemingway. I'm in my third year of school at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Illinois. Just got back here after a weeklong Thanksgiving break in Oak Park. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. It's fairly well done, but I think you ought to have worn an outfit that was a bit more revealing. A slutty dress would probably have made a bigger impact on your audience. However, if you've got very muscular shoulders, arms, or legs, you probably made the right outfit choice. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The idea of judging the value of a man's life based on his views, or even his contributions to society, is something I find rather abhorrent. My opposition to the concept of judging value of life by utility to society is also my reasoning for supporting animal rights. Once a man becomes a danger to the lives of those around him, thus expressing his disrespect for the sanctity of life, I support immediate incarceration, but not capital punishment. In cases where capturing the dangerous individual is an impossibility, I would condone murder. Killing in self-defense is also permissible. In the case of Gorzax the future dictator, I would not hesitate to kill. I'm no sentimental waste of air; I just have a great respect for life, which I count as being a fundamentally good attribute. As for Morgan's argument, I still cannot agree. I think Thuryl articulated my argument best when he mentioned the fallacy in assigning a finite value to life. Life has infinite value in my mind. There's no need to "judge." -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. The mind is bewildered by delusion. Reasoning is destroyed when the mind is bewildered. One falls down when reasoning is destroyed."- The Bhagavad Gita. Posts: 1798 | Registered: Sunday, October 5 2003 07:00 |

More or less. There were a couple of other active members that were rather moderate (ones that came to Chance from SW), but the majority of members that posted regularly were friends with RC from school. For whatever reason, they all happened to be fundies. Fundies of various levels of intelligence and reasoning ability, but fundies all. I stopped posting there, at least in all political threads, quite a while before the forums went down. I would probably have left permanently long ago if I wasn't a moderator there. Chance has been down for weeks. I'm unsure as to whether the forum is permanently dead, or whether RC plans to revive it, or has already done so. I'm not holding my breath, personally. The prospect of reassuming my position as a moderate liberal in a sea of reactionary fundamentalists, on a board that mainly features political discussion, isn't an awfully attractive one. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. ADoS, the classic "kill one person to save a thousand people" moral quandary includes the statement that all those involved in the situation are innocent. If a man planned to kill a thousand people and would do so unless his life was ended, I would certainly be willing to kill that man. In situations involving the need to sacrifice one innocent human for a thousand others, however, I would refuse to kill. Believing that a thousand innocent lives are worth more than a single one is tantamount to equating human lives with apples, or two-by-fours. It's faulty, dangerous thinking. Killing a man just for the sake of doubling one's wealth? Odious, simply odious, and far worse than killing to buy a loved one a few more years. As for using these ill-gotten gains to save other lives, almost anyone would choose instead to hoard or spend the vast majority of the money, and perhaps donate a piddling sum to charity. People, in general, cannot be expected to be generous. This is why welfare is so necessary. I'd never do it, and seeing that so many of you that aren't TM would be quite willing to kill for wealth shocks and disturbs me. It would seem that all the never-ending strife on Earth has truly cheapened human life in the eyes of the people. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. Although I'm no moral paragon, I can quite confidently say that I would never kill in such circumstances, or in almost any other situation, for that matter. Although being an ineffectual individual entirely incapable of decisive action has its drawbacks, it keeps me from ever really being dangerous to others. Since I accomplish very little, and am terrified of taking risks, I've almost never committed any action I'm ashamed of. Almost all of my regrets involve things I wish I had done at some point or the other, but didn't quite have the balls or motivation to do. I don't even believe in killing one man to save many, since trading lives seems like a pointless exercise to me. One life is equivalent to ten thousand in my mind, since I don't believe in quantifying life. There's no way I could ever convince myself that I was justified in killing a stranger to buy a friend a few years more. This moral revulsion to the act, coupled with my aforementioned difficulty in acting decisively, would effectively prevent me from killing the stranger. -------------------- Stughalf "Delusion arises from anger. Not bad, except for the fact that you left that little bit of a moustache on even while dressed as a woman, which ruins the effect somewhat. It's not necessarily stupid to have a large family. In fact, it's quite a reasonable proposition as long as one has the income to comfortably support such a family. It's just that, in general, those people that have had substandard educations (the poor, usually) tend to have less knowledge and understanding regarding birth control and contraceptives, and the reproductive process in general. As a result, uneducated people tend to have larger families. I don't believe genetics and evolution have anything to do with this, though. It's a socioeconomic issue more than anything else.
