Yeah, you're sort of on track, Zeviz; but actually Multiple Monikers and Ben were a bit closer, for just the first line. I think all the lines should seem fair in retrospect, except possibly the last one, because as I warned, it's a bit vague about just how you're supposed to determine the overall answer. But with this additional warning, once you got the first three lines the fourth should become clear. So sez me. It is notoriously easy to compose riddles which seem doable when you make them up, but are simply impossible to anyone else. As I remember this one, my D&D players needed a fair amount of coaxing, so maybe it isn't as fair as I hoped. Okay, Stareye has now blown the all clear. But I still think that the protocol I proposed could have been an amusing way to continue broadcast conversation while filtering out a troll. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. I believe Geneforge uses a hexagonal grid, underneath the usually rectangular floorplans, and this explains most of the odd features in Geneforge movement. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

This troll is having a tediously long run. I'm tired and grumpy enough today that I don't want to run into trollish replies in the middle of any topic I've been following, so I'm reluctant to open anything. So for me, today, this is a denial of service attack. I am somewhat interested in the countermeasure I'm trying on General now. Nobody else seems interested in it, though, alas. I'm not sure whether they don't understand the concept, or would just rather take their chances with troll intrusions than turn General into a chatroom under UBB by giving every poster a dedicated topic, and discussing by editing. -------------------- We're not doing cool. I'm not sure this idea was clear to everyone. It's not just to crowd out the troll topics; it's a way to continue discussions with no risk of intrusions by the troll, by effectively turning UBB into a chatroom. If people just keep on editing the first post in their personal topics, and don't reply or read any replies, then the only things the troll can force you to see are their subject lines on the forum page. The troll topics are identified by starter, so you can avoid them. And since you only read the first posts in any topic, you won't enounter any troll replies, either. The 'chat' topics can all get deleted once the troll is dealt with; but this would be a way of preventing a troll from denying service by threat of shock image replies in all topics. Of course, just leaving the boards for a while will make the problem go away in due course, but wouldn't it nice to know you could have a countermeasure if you wanted one? / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / [ Thursday, June 30, 2005 12:31: Message edited by: Student of Trinity ] -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. Mmm, solving it the very first time probably wasn't so easy, but recognizing a familiar form was indeed so. You'll note that your answer is a special case of mine, with an assumption that the king will have to obey the peasant's requests about drawing. People were starting to make progress on my first riddle above, but had only gotten as far as the first line. Any further thoughts? -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. We must discover how things really seem. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

Here are some more specific questions: 1) There's a tough door in the NE corner of the Bandit Fort. How do you get in there? Is it worth it? 2) With a duo, I can't get enough rune reading to learn spells. Is this just the breaks, or am I doing something wrong? What's the best way to pump my rune reading so I can learn those spells? -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

Cabbages have fiber. I was feeling a bit guilty that such a feeble one-liner retort was naught but spam, when I realized sadly that the high fiber content of cabbage is some of the most valuable information that has ever been posted on those boards. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. There'll be other shaped belts. It would have been nice to have kept that one, since it would let you make a good artifact (for a Shaper) a bit sooner. But it's no big deal. If you've cleared Harmony at level 18 you're doing fine. Finding the spy requires touring the back part of the rebel camp; in an obscure corner you find an incriminating object. It's not a major quest, though. We'd appreciate it if you used normal sentences, capitalization, and punctuation. It's a bit hard to read the way you wrote that post, and if you're asking for help, you should make it as easy as possible for people to help you. Keeping RWG alive is one of the most important rituals of our order. But RWG cannot live on spam alone. I am therefore taking the brave step of downloading the GC demo. If I don't make it back, it has been fun. Curious: neither Safari 2.0 nor IE for mac 5.2 could open the ftp page. But good old Unix command line ftp got the file. Hmm: after playing through the tutorial, I'm actually impressed. Oh, I understand that the problem is that the game's AI can't fight for toffee. But the graphics are Spartanly effective, and the gameplay seems simple, but potentially rich. Perhaps a revamped AI could revive this game. On the other hand, it looks like making a good AI could be quite hard, because there are a number of options, and a fair amount of motion to plan. Alwan is tougher to use with an Agent because all the rest of your strategy is about staying at a distance from enemies, so he doesn't fit in. Greta can be a fine complement. There are some fine multi-target spells. In the meantime, Daze should solve any problems with being cornered or swarmed. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Perhaps TM tried hard years ago to get people to understand his ideas, and became disgruntled only after prolonged failure. In my short time here, though, I haven't noticed him trying very hard to explain himself. If he would, I for one would be quite prepared to give him a lot more respect. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. We must discover how things really seem. As an Agent you can beat the game solo, and in fact you'll have a much easier time doing so that with either of the other two classes, once you know what you're doing. Making creations is actually quite inefficient for Agents. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

There are two basic good things about Geneforge, as far as I am concerned. It is significantly different (though of course not in all ways) from other games. It has a freshness. It is well enough executed to live up to its initial promise. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

The old 'Take me out to the ball game' song does mention crackerjack; the exact line is "Buy me some peanuts and crackerjack / I don't care if I never get back." This suggests (a) that crackerjack was never that much about peanuts, since they had to be mentioned separately, and (b) that crackerjack has long been recognized as dangerous. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem.
