I am back to IE here at work because Firefox made the hamster go crazy. It just took too much memory to operate, so I had to choose between Firefox and Thunderbird. I hate Outlook even more than IE, so Firefox is gone from here. I use Safari 2.0 at home, and it seems fine, though I miss the nice RSS button from Firefox. Maybe I'll switch. I'm pretty sure you can open PDFs in the browser with Safari, but I forget how. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. We must discover how things really seem. Hmmm; if Drakefyre is a mere Viceroy ... who is the Roy? Clearly this must be one of our mysteries. But our laundry problems are easy to solve. Hey, can we have many dozens of elaborate degrees of initiation? If so, I want to be the Imponderable Archon of Imponderable Archons. I think that would look nice on a business card. Ahh, trouble is, I think that if you have to ask whether you can be Imponderable Archon of Imponderable Archons, then you just aren't cut out to be one. Real Imponderable Archons are Imponderable Archons already. Maybe I should settle for being a Ponderable Archon. -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Problem with all these reassuring professions of responsible moderation in all things is that they are immoderately boring. After a few candidates have dutifully posted here, others may feel compelled to follow suit just to show willing. Perhaps someone could lock this thread, before all this common sense and responsibility gets out of hand. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. I foolishly tried to find out what 'lagot' means, and Google just sent me back to a thread about a pulley problem that apparently went unsolved last fall. It was posed in this thread. M1 has mass 80 kg, and M2 has mass 6kg. What is the acceleration of M1? I don't suppose anyone cares now, but since electrons are cheap: Assuming the strings don't stretch, and pulleys and strings are weightless, we have that the tension in the top string must be twice the tension in the bottom string (or else the lower pulley would accelerate infinitely, being massless). If the strings don't stretch, we also have the speed (and hence acceleration) of M1 must be -(1/2) those of M2. With string tensions opposing gravity for each mass, we apply F = ma to each mass. Having a total of four equations involving the two accelerations and two tensions, we solve for everything and find a1 = (-9.8 m/s^2) (M1-2M2)/(M1+4M2) = -6.4 m/s^2. You can't help respecting anybody who can spell 'onomatopoeiae', even if he doesn't spell it right. And the reason this is all on topic is that people choking on pretzels, people eating relatives who have turned into pretzels, and people who are being eaten by relatives after having turned into pretzels, they all make noises that sound like "RWG!" -------------------- We're not doing cool. As a theoretical physicist I can't resist pointing out (in this thread on moderator electioneering) that we measure masses in units of energy anyway, or sometimes length, and we routinely set h, c, G and pi all equal to one by choice of units. This makes everything simpler, and we need all the help we can get. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. We must discover how things really seem. Ever castled queenside? Whew! The pain. Most of the old chess injuries that still bother me come from that. They don't abbreviate it 'O-O-O' for nothing. Really, it's just not right that chess doctors simply stitch you up, pump you with novocaine, and send you right back in to enfilade your bishops. Chess careers are short, and to see all the ex-grandmasters crippled at 30, I don't know how those quacks can reconcile it with their Hippocratic oaths, I really don't. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. But who gets into the runoff? The goal in the first round will simply be to ensure that the right people get into the runoff. I will most want my first choice to be there, but if that seems assured, then I will try to get as many of my other preferred candidates in too, so that they will enjoy the prestige of having made the runoff. Or I might deliberately throw all my first round votes to a candidate I don't want at all, in an effort to keep a stronger candidate out of the runoff so that my first choice will win the second round. But then if everybody else is thinking this way, we'll end up electing a yellow caterpillar. Perhaps we could make things even more inscrutable, for instance by having separate WBC, WBA and IBC elections, and then arguing about which is real? -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. Just how will the runoff work? This would affect how I voted, since there is a lot to think about in assigning so many votes. I can see this process being a lot more interesting than the result will be important. Can we get some opinion polls circulating before the actual election? Another layer or two of feedback should make voting even more incomprehensible. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. We must discover how things really seem. Questions for Alorael about shooting: How much shooting do you do? Do you do it competitively? What caliber? I'm quite a mediocre shot, but sometimes I have good days. Or had, back in my army reserve days. I don't know if it is right to call shooting a sport, but it is definitely a skill. Small targets at 300 yards are not easy, even without the scribbane. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. We must discover how things really seem. As one of the few registered voters who are not also candidates, I feel like a rotten borough elector. Until this is over I shall have to hold the axe extra carefully when I shave. I endorse Thuryl. His arguments seem very strong. Kelandon is already a moderator of some other active boards here. I agree that Dolphin has a good case too, but seniority should also be worth something. Do not mail jars. And for wine bottles, it's carry on, especially if your bags are soft-sided. Which leads to a new topic: how come some laundromats are so much better than others? The little one in the middle of Amsterdam's red light district can get oloroso sherry out of white shirts and a duffel bag. Do they use some kind of radioactive detergent that civilians can't buy, or what? -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Hmmm; I never really noticed this big jump in difficulty on Gull. A jump, yes, but just enough to be interesting. From the landing on, it was clear that the stakes would be higher; but I was ready. But I was hitting Gull at level 30 as a lone Agent or a melee Guardian with Alwan, and I wasn't too far behind that as a Shaper with a pair of good Glaahks and four Vlish. A pair of Battle Alphas and a Searing Artila really does not sound like much of a crew for Gull, to me. I can well believe Omen Eye was tough! -------------------- We're not doing cool.
