That is my new favorite pun. Thank you, Thuryl! —Alorael, who very nearly giggled. This was both because he is a giddy and giggly person and because it seemed an appropriate encomium to the creator. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Monster drops aren't entirely random like in Exile, but you can get any of a variety of items from a list or, sometimes, none at all. Luck gives you more stuff and better stuff within the bounds of what your enemies can drop. —Alorael, who had the most luck (pun) seeing the difference while killing Ruby Skeletons and collecting rubies. Nioca, what you're saying is that you couldn't do enough damage to prevent them from healing, not that it's impossible to do enough damage to prevent them from fully healing. —Alorael, who doesn't have enough patience to spend fifteen rounds killing a gadget with sparkly lights. Maybe he's been spoiled by the ease with which the blinkenlighten of a computer can be seriously ruined. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Are you sure? I don't think they regenerated completely for me even with the power supply on. They come back to full health in a few turns, but it's not especially difficult to knock them out. —Alorael, who didn't spend much time fighting them. He mostly hid around corners to kill the mobile enemies and then dashed to the generator. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

You should be able to enter the testing grounds in order. The first is the one near Grindstone. After you've passed that one you can get into the one north of Formello, although that one is much harder. Once it's done you can head off to the next one, and so on. —Alorael, who has no idea what could prevent you from opening the door to the first test. You don't use a Y independently in the middle of a word to produce a vowel sound. And, for that matter, you don't use faux-Latin dipthongs like Ae. —Alorael, who gets away with it because he and his name are both angelic. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

But you haven't minimally altered the names to (presumably) reflect some kind of linguistic shift over the centuries! —Alorael, who considers Asimov's naming scheme only one step above using Y and strange dipthongs to produce fantasy names like Kylaerolylylae. It's a large step, admittedly, but only one. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Enemies who aren't able to attack you regenerate quickly, but it's possible to deal damage faster than they regenerate. —Alorael, who took out pylons by spells and not by archery. This required far more trips to town to regain energy, but it was ever so satisfying. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I think chats are inherently disappointing. You go expecting deep, stimulating conversation and you end up with the biological ramifications and sociological implications of vahnatai reproduction. —Alorael, who meant stimulating in a difference sense. Maybe it's best not to make any assumptions. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Neither was ever active on Spiderweb, of course. Alcritas, at least, expressed less than cordial sentiments towards these boards and their creator. That didn't stop him from running for Misc. mod, or rather from being run for Misc. mod. —Alorael, who doesn't think asking who a member is is a useful question. Both were part of the pullulation of Polaris. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Baldur's Gate got it right. Just because the pencil and paper version says a round takes one minute doesn't mean it should in real-time. I say half second rounds for NWN2! —Alorael, who never really got into NWN in the first place. He just failed hugely to be impressed by the game. Yes, this is the same as the common BoE complaint, except he doesn't really like the NWN engine much either. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's not that all lawyers are soulless bottom-feeders. That's just a category that includes all the lawyers who run for office. —Alorael, who should be fair. Whether for office implies soulless bottom-feeding or vice versa has not yet been firmly established, although the causal link is glaringly obvious. When did the Empire kill sliths except in passing? The only sliths on the surface were the ones in the Goldddale mines in A3. —Alorael, who wonders why the surface-dwellers took the slith invasion so calmly. Either they were familiar with sliths already from the war or they just aren't that worried about hitherto unknown humanoid species appearing. There have never been many friendly sliths besides Gnass, which is still there in A4 despite somewhat strained relations. Remember, between A3 and A4 Avernum fought another big war against the sltihs, so they're probably still not popular. The fact that they have yet another crazed cult can't help. —Alorael, who didn't really see all that many more friendly nephilim. They don't even have their own village except for a small camp and a bunch of bandits! Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's "Song of the Pirate" in Spanish. I tried my hand at translating it and, of course, there's no way to do it without utterly butchering it. But the refrain works! Oh, my ship is my treasure, And my god is liberty, My only law, force and the wind, My only homeland the sea. —Alorael, who even got it to rhyme. Oddly enough, that's one of the parts of the poem that doesn't rhyme is Spanish. And yes, it probably should be freedom instead of liberty, but then it wouldn't rhyme [ Wednesday, September 20, 2006 16:14: Message edited by: Iredeemable & Irremediable ] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

¡Sentenciado estoy a muerte! —Alorael, who thinks that needs to be translated and/or set to music. He can work on the former if someone else is willing to take up the latter. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

As has been pointed out, there are times when melee is a very bad idea. Enemies with high Parry and Riposte, for example, and enemies who charm attackers. You can always use bows, and you can always use a shield with a bow, which is better than waving around a useless halberd. —Alorael, who can add a little bit more generally. The formulas for weapon damage are no different for melee and ranged. The only difference is in the weapons that are available. You'll certainly find more powerful swords and spears than bows. Maybe you should look for a good annotated Canterbury Tales. Barring that, which stories are you reading? Some are less accessible than others, and some were deliberately obtuse even for contemporary readers. —Alorael, who thinks anyone reading the Miller's Tale with emphasis on medieval life and culture is missing the big, obvious, coarse point. Wrong, wrong, wrong, and right. But for all practical purposes, they're all right. —Alorael, who thinks the classes were already discussed. The real question, which still has not been answered, is which possible combination of skills isn't available. No, it's not really intuitive at all. Maybe I'm alone in this, but I don't care what Ash thinks. He can be a raging homophobe if he'd like as long as all his raging is silent and internal. He says and, I presume, does the right things, and that's good enough. I also think the procreation debate is backwards. There are too many people on Earth. We need fewer people. Implanting homosexuality would solve a lot of problems! —Alorael, who wouldn't mind being gay for a few days just for the novelty. Then, of course, he'd like to go back to being straight mostly because it's so much more convenient in a hostile world. All things being equal, bisexuality seems like the best way. You can be unconscious for some time without any harm. You can even be unconscious and dying. But medically it's pretty clear that being dead means being past the point of no return. —Alorael, who actually wouldn't mind immortality that much as long is it came with an off switch. Health to go with it would be nice. Being a blue rock has both of those, but as Drew pointed out, pondering the mysteries of the universe probably gets boring after a while, and it's probably hard to drink skribbane.
