As the title says, today is, once again, International Talk Like A Pirate Day; a holiday which is, of course, rather self-explanatory. Avast.

So, to cel-arr!-brate, here's a list of pirate pickup lines I received for the occasion. Er. Avast.

Top Ten Pickup lines for use on International Talk Like a Pirate Day

10 . Avast, me proud beauty! Wanna know why my Roger is so Jolly?

9. Have ya ever met a man with a real yardarm?

8. Come on up and see me urchins.

7. Yes, that is a hornpipe in my pocket and I am happy to see you.

6. I'd love to drop anchor in your lagoon.

5. Pardon me, but would ya mind if fired me cannon through your porthole?

4. How'd you like to scrape the barnacles off of me rudder?

3. Ya know, darlin', I'm 97 percent chum free.

2. Well blow me down?

And the number one pickup line for use on International Talk Like a Pirate Day is …

1. Prepare to be boarded.

Bonus pickup lines (when the ones above don't work, as they often won't)

They don't call me Long John because my head is so big.

You're drinking a Salty Dog? How'd you like to try the real thing?

Wanna shiver me timbers?

I've sailed the seven seas, and you're the sleekest schooner I've ever sighted.

Brwaack! Polly want a cracker? … Oh, wait. That's for Talk Like a PARROT Day.

That's the finest pirate booty I've ever laid eyes on.

Let's get together and haul some keel.

That's some treasure chest you've got there.

Top Ten Pickup Lines for the Lady Pirates

By popular demand ...

10. What are YOU doing here?

9. Is that a belayin' pin in yer britches, or are ye ... (this one is never completed)

8. Come show me how ye bury yer treasure, lad!

7. So, tell me, why do they call ye, "Cap'n Feathersword?"

6. That's quite a cutlass ye got thar, what ye need is a good scabbard!

5. Aye, I guarantee ye, I've had a twenty percent decrease in me "lice ratio!"

4. I've crushed seventeen men's skulls between me thighs!

3. C'mon, lad, shiver me timbers!

2. RAMMING SPEED!

...and the number one Female Pirate Pick-up Line:

1. You. Pants Off. Now!

Feel free to contribute. IMAGE(http://degiorgi.math.hr/forum/images/smiles/pirate.gif)

EDIT: Arr! Blarst these scurvy italics, matey!

*breaks out into song*
~There's just one word that says it all.
Arrg!
Arrg when you're happy.
Arrg when you're sad.
Arrg when you're good or bad.
Arrg!
Arrg to starboard.
Arrg to port.
Arrg from stem to stern.
Arrg!
What's that chum?
Arrg!
One more time.
Arrg!
Very good. Excelent. In fact, arrg!~

I blame Freddie the Fish.

Edit: I missed a verse.

Well, when you have to endure life at sea, even pirates need some form of naval tradition. With the lash out of favor among freebooting crews, you can't rely entirely on rum to pick up the slack, or your guys all fall out of the rigging.

Canción del pirata

José de Espronceda

Con diez cañones por banda,
viento en popa, a toda vela,
no corta el mar, sino vuela
un velero bergantín.
Bajel pirata que llaman,
por su bravura, El Temido,
en todo mar conocido
del uno al otro confín.

La luna en el mar riela
en la lona gime el viento,
y alza en blando movimiento
olas de plata y azul;
y va el capitán pirata,
cantando alegre en la popa,
Asia a un lado, al otro Europa,
y allá a su frente Istambul:

Navega, velero mío
sin temor,
que ni enemigo navío
ni tormenta, ni bonanza
tu rumbo a torcer alcanza,
ni a sujetar tu valor.

Veinte presas
hemos hecho
a despecho
del inglés
y han rendido
sus pendones
cien naciones
a mis pies.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

Allá; muevan feroz guerra
ciegos reyes
por un palmo más de tierra;
que yo aquí; tengo por mío
cuanto abarca el mar bravío,
a quien nadie impuso leyes.

Y no hay playa,
sea cualquiera,
ni bandera
de esplendor,
que no sienta
mi derecho
y dé pechos mi valor.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

A la voz de "¡barco viene!"
es de ver
cómo vira y se previene
a todo trapo a escapar;
que yo soy el rey del mar,
y mi furia es de temer.

En las presas
yo divido
lo cogido
por igual;
sólo quiero
por riqueza
la belleza
sin rival.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

¡Sentenciado estoy a muerte!
Yo me río
no me abandone la suerte,
y al mismo que me condena,
colgaré de alguna antena,
quizá; en su propio navío
Y si caigo,
¿qué es la vida?
Por perdida
ya la di,
cuando el yugo
del esclavo,
como un bravo,
sacudí.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

Son mi música mejor
aquilones,
el estrépito y temblor
de los cables sacudidos,
del negro mar los bramidos
y el rugir de mis cañones.

Y del trueno
al son violento,
y del viento
al rebramar,
yo me duermo
sosegado,
arrullado
por el mar.

Que es mi barco mi tesoro,
que es mi dios la libertad,
mi ley, la fuerza y el viento,
mi única patria, la mar.

It's "Song of the Pirate" in Spanish. I tried my hand at translating it and, of course, there's no way to do it without utterly butchering it. But the refrain works!

Oh, my ship is my treasure,
And my god is liberty,
My only law, force and the wind,
My only homeland the sea.

—Alorael, who even got it to rhyme. Oddly enough, that's one of the parts of the poem that doesn't rhyme is Spanish. And yes, it probably should be freedom instead of liberty, but then it wouldn't rhyme

Well, there are always The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything.

We are the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything.
We just stay home, and lie around.
And if you ask us to do anything,
We'll just tell you, We don't do anything.

There are several inane verses. The original version, sung by a cast of CG vegetables, is the best.

Don't forget The Last Saskatchewan Pirate by the Arrogant Worms.

I used to be a farmer and I made a livin' fine
I had a little stretch of land along the CP line
But times went by and though I tried the money wasn't there
And bankers came and took my land and told me fair is fair
I looked for every kind of job, the answer always no
"Hire you now?" they always laughed, "We just let twenty go!"
The government they promised me a measly little sum
But I've got too much pride to end up just another bum
Then I thought who gives a damn if all the jobs are gone
I'm going to be a pirate on the River Saskatchewan....
Arrrrrgh!

Cause it's a Heave! Ho! Hay! Ho! Comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
It's a Ho! Hay! Hi! Hay! Farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

Well you'd think the local farmers would know that I'm at large
But just the other day I found an unprotected barge
I snuck up right behind them and they were none the wiser
I rammed the ship and sank it and I stole their fertilizer
A bridge outside of Moosejaw spans a mighty river
Farmers cross in so much fear their stomachs are aquiver
'Cause they know that Tractor Jack is hiding in the bay
I'll jump the bridge and knock them cold and sail off with their hay

Cause it's a Heave! Ho! Hay! Ho! Comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
It's a Ho! Hay! Hi! Hay! Farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

Well Mountie Bob he chased me, he was always at my throat
He'd follow on the shoreline but he didn't own a boat
But cutbacks were a comin' and the mountie lost his job
So now he's sailin' with me and we call him Salty Bob
A swingin' sword, a scull 'n' bones and pleasant company
I never pay my income tax and screw the G.S.T. (screw it!)
Prince Albert down to Saskatoon, the terror of the sea
If you want to reach the Co-op, boy, you gotta get by me!

Cause it's a Heave! Ho! Hay! Ho! Comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
It's a Ho! Hay! Hi! Hay! Farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

Well pirate life's appealing but you don't just find it here
I've heard that in Alberta there's a band of buccaneers
They roam the Athabaska from Smith to Fort McKay
You're gonna lose your Stetson if you have to pass their way
Well winter is a comin' and a chill is in the breeze
My pirate days are over when the river starts to freeze
I'll be back in spring time, but now I have to go
I heard there's lots of plunderin' down in New Mexico

Cause it's a Heave! Ho! Hay! Ho! Comin' down the plains
Stealin' wheat and barley and all the other grains
It's a Ho! Hay! Hi! Hay! Farmers bar your doors
When you see the Jolly Roger on Regina's mighty shores

And there are, of course, the remarkably eloquent and curiously melodious Pirates of Penzance.

[Edit: A paradox! A paradox! No, just a comma splice.]

Well, the two year old can't play by himself, now can he?

It may be to their detriment, but I've had the kids playing age-appropriate computer games since they've been big enough to sit on my lap. (About six months old) And often the younger kids want to play the big kid games, too.

Edit: Most recently, my four year old has taken a liking to The Sims. He likes to have them clean up their mess... If only I could get him to clean up his own. :)

Somewhat late, but I celebrated Talk Like a Pirate Day with several of my friends in great style... the style of pirate costumes, swords and random fights, getting us kicked out of a class. Funnily enough, we did a better job doing that than talking like pirates. Kept on forgetting.

Yesterday, my attention was drawn to the radio station http://www.shantyraidio.com (Irish/Celtic/Pirate Shanties). I'm posting this here because within hours of listening to it I heard both "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate" and "We're the Pirates who don't anything".
