It's a matter of opinion. Spidwebbers who cut their teeth on Exile often prefer the Exiles, while latecomers often think Avernum is better.

—Alorael, who prefers Avernum despite cutting his teeth on Exile. He's a dangerous renegade and/or a slave to the whims of trendy fashion.

Purity and innocence should be treasured and protected from the predations of, oh, 90% of Spiderweb. (The other 10% is composed of confused newbies.) And Desperance is like learning to swim by sudden immersion... in 50 molar hydrochloric acid.

—Alorael, who means this in only the nicest possible way. He also must admit that "Oh GOD!" is a more frequent exclamation than "Oh JESUS!" in the context. Just his two cents of circumstantial evidence...

The next person to steal my signature will have their post edited with extreme prejudice. The post will never be the same unless it is edited back, and even then it will still have an edit tag! I abuse powar and revive the abuse of vowel alteration in the process. Next: Evol skwirrels return!

—Alorael, who means this only in the most innocuous and wholesome of ways. He will, however, edit the post, so please don't shed tears and wave the CoC around. You have been warned.

Yes, I spoke too soon. You can also use force barriers to prevent splitting. Barriers at least two spaces thick in all directions, with room for one fighter to stay in with the Doomguard and hack away, will prevent splitting. But that's a phenomenal waste of spell points, difficult to pull off, and ultimately at least as much of a headache as just killing the thing.

—Alorael, who has never been able to set up the force barrier blockade faster than he could wipe out the Doomguard and babies.

You can also hear strange things if your ear becomes blocked with excess wax or you get pieces of material (usually calcium, I believe) loose in your ear. The calcium is also likely to cause dizziness, and both are more likely to gurgle than ring, but it might account for some ocean-like noises.

—Alorael, who would consider ringing to be a sign that the aliens are making contact with you through the devices they planted in the enamel of your teeth when you were kidnapped from Roswell. You don't remember it, but that's only because of the extensive memory alterations perfored by the (soon to be defunct?) CIA.

The chance of free Spidweb games is nil, but Jeff is very good about giving out new registration codes to people who are unregistered for a variety of reasons. As long as you have the name that was on the credit card you registered with and the address you used, you can get another code. Again, email is the way to do it.

—Alorael, who doesn't think he's missing any information required, but it's been a while since he had to request it. If Jeff needs to know more, he'll let you know. Spidweb beats most larger companies for being helpful hands down.

Yep, welcome to Spiderweb in all its glory. You're getting your share of that glory right now.

There was a poll on my age once before. The number one result was "Ageless" and the number two was, as I frequently paraphrase, older than the bottom layer of dirt on the movie theater floor.

—Alorael, who denies all allegations. His failing is beef, and only beef. two out of three chorus members agree that his mother should be left out of it.

There's no way to prevent it from splitting, so you should make sure you do as much damage as possible per hit. Heavily bless your strongest fighter (or several fighters, if they're all about equal). Then whack away, making sure that you always hit the original one. Copies appear with only as much health as the parent Doomguard had after it was hit, so with enough work, you can kill all the copies if you want.

However, as soon as you kill the first one (probably the original), the portcullis will open. At that point, if there's a way through all the Doomguards, run for it. If not, you'll have to do some more hacking and slashing.

—Alorael, who can also recommend the editor if you're completely and utterly stuck. There's an option in one of the menus to remove that doomguard and open the portcullis.

If you have nothing to say, don't say anything. Believe it or not, spam is still spam when its oblique mockery by image.

—Alorael, who gives 7:5 odds for Drizzt. The number of drooling fans clinging to him may impede his ability to fight somewhat, but in the end the howling hordes are more likely to tear apart Conan.

I believe there's a Null Bug without its anti-magic field in the Tower of Magi as a research specimen. I know it's there in E3, but I don't recall whether or not it's still present in the Avernized version.

—Alorael, who cordially detests many enemies under many circumstances. Doomguards are probably the biggest pain, generally. At least they're never used as generic enemies to be tossed around like goblins.

In order to stop generating spam, I cordially inform you that I have hit the 101 moniker mark. I would have mentioned the 100 moniker mark, but I missed it due to a counting error.

Yes, this justifies everything anyone has ever said about me. Please don't rub it in.

I keep Ur-Basilisks, Null Bugs, and Gazers, but I hardly ever summon either one. They're not necessary. Creatures that are just fighters or casters, not utility creatures, are even more useless. They just steal experience when they kill things.

—Alorael, who doesn't think that guessing which doomguards are hostile and which are copies of the contraband summoning is an important question. Part of the problem is that copies of the creature are set to the default setting, which means the duplicates are all hostile to your party. Only the original will be on your side, and its propensity towards creating an army of enemies hardly makes it a great help.

This is a day that marks something very special. It's so special that I can't even say what it is. If you can guess and you live within easy walking distance, I will give you a cookie. Otherwise, you can have the satisfaction of knowing that you are smart.

We have reason to believe that Djur sticks around through sleazy backroom dealmaking, threats of physical, emotional, and spiritual violence, and random acts of higher beings.

That and the fact that if we remove Djur, Spiderweb may collapse into a pile of virtual plywood and girders.

—Alorael, who would like to point out that Djur was once banned temporarily. It didn't make much sense at the time and it didn't make any more sense in retrospect, but it happened. The result was, by and large, doubleplusungood.

movie of A3? in General

RPGs are, by nature, focused on almost exactly the kind of thing that makes a bad book or movie. Combat is good, but not constantly. Puzzles are a bore. Wandering around? Yeah, right.

If an Exile game were made into a movie, it would probably have to be an adaptation of E2. Take the first three chapters and heavily abridge the fourth and you've got a movie.

It probably wouldn't be very good, but it could be. It would definitely still be a weird movie. Anyone who could make something good out of Exile without editing it so heavily that it really isn't Exile (I, Robot, anyone?) would use their talents better elsewhere.

—Alorael, who happened to like the LotR movies as well. They were very different from the books in everything but plot framework, but they were still good. An Exile movie would have to do the same, only it would need to make for an even greater separation between game and movie than book and movie.
