Yes, that's why I mentioned the when. You know, L-space books are a lot like Richard White. They can both not exist today but have existed today tomorrow while not actually existing tomorrow. It's troublesome. —Alorael, who has been led to believe that yesterday Richard White not only didn't exist but never existed and never would come into existence. It was a bad day. Amazon is your friend. Five seconds with Amazon answers your question. —Alorael, who would like to point out that while Amazon is an online purchase, it is an online purchase from a major company with a good reputation and good reason to maintain it. It's a little bit like trusting Spiderweb to send you a registration code, actually. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

quote:Trying to find gold in the middle of a gold rush has some problems, notably the other people also trying to find gold. It might be a better idea to go back to, say, 1845 and look for gold then. At that point you have the advantage of knowing about the gold before everyone else. [Edit: It's not the this, it's not the that, it's the the!] —Alorael, who has taken a bit of inspiration from Guns of the South and considered taking modern arms to Americans in 1490 or so. Spanish steel is less intimidating when it's matched against Kalashnikovs. [ Sunday, November 20, 2005 14:11: Message edited by: The Society of Association ] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Looking for Terry Pratchett books in a library is a strange exercise. You need an advanced understanding of L-space mechanics to know exactly what book you're getting, where it is, how to get it, and when it will be there. [Edit: "Should be italic."] —Alorael, who just read and enjoyed Bring the Jubilee. It may not be exactly what Ward Moore intended, but he views it as a cautionary tale: accidentally killing people can make it rather difficult to get a decent watch. If it's an Avernum game and you want the character editor back, look at the bottom of this page. This might work for Geneforge too, but I make no guarantees. —Alorael, who can also think of using Sylak's Dice in Nethergate as a cheat mode of sorts. It certainly gives you a very unfair advantage while gambling. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The movie's genre isn't what you think. You can't see what the squirrel is holding very well, can you? —Alorael, who would consider the [spoiler]/squirrel a fitting addition to the White Horde. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Adventurers are (Democrats/Republicans) and villains are (Republicans/Democrats). All RPGs are actually political satire, or at least political commentary. —Alorael, who excludes TM's scenarios, which fall into a higher political category as well as postmodernism. It's been a long time since I read a Redwall book, but I think I remember liking Salamandastron and Mossflower. —Alorael, who definitely remembers thinking that it might be best to read the books in reverse chronological order. That way you never run into the creation of a secret before its revelation. Reading in publishing order probably works as well if not better, though. Because we've done that over and over again and more or less shown by example that a topic can be maintained for a truly excessive length of time? Go take a look at most of RWG and a good half of General. Escape From the Pit, Crystal Souls, and Ruined World were the titles of the Exile games, not the Avernum games. Avernum 4, like the previous Avernums, has no longer name. Exile is, in Jeff's words, outdated. There won't be any more Exile. All further developments will be Avernum games. —Alorael, who would guess that Jeff listens to his septuagenarian Eskimo fans when deciding whether or not to discontinue a series. They've weighed in on Exile, and the verdict is negative. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Believe it or not, there are cheats for Ocean Bound. They're available from Spiderweb because nobody else cares enough to post them. —Alorael, who doesn't know of any Lost Souls cheats. Like Galactic Core, it doesn't really need any. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

There's nothing a soldier can do that a knight can't do better, and I've usually found one knight more useful than two soldiers. There are occasional exceptions, like in cases of extreme cannon fodder, but generally I make knights, not soldiers. Archers are less useful than knights most of the time, and they're fairly worthless for taking and holding territory, but a few archers at the end of a bridge with a few knights or soldiers can hold off an army. That's the purpose of the unit, and it works nicely. —Alorael, who likes roads strategically. They make defending and attacking ever so slightly complicated. I don't recall any axes in Avernum, and "no name sword" doesn't give us a whole lot to work with. All arrows are, as far as I can tell, arrows. There aren't any colors involved, although you can pick up a few Arrows of Life and Arrows of Light along with the Blessed Arrows and lesser variations. —Alorael, who isn't sure what other information he can give. There are no unnamed swords that aren't just average, run of the mill swords and there are no arrows categorized by color. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Yes, Robinator has also been Da Robin Bot and a few other variations on Robin, and Bonum Noctis, and a few more things too, I'm sure. I have enough trouble keeping track of my own monikers. —Alorael, who actually hasn't succeeded in doing so. He lost about a week and can't reconstruct it from memory or the records he can find. Speaking of memories, though, just being "Alorael" was nice, once upon a time... Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I would like to go back in time a few minutes in order to delete this topic before I read it, thus preventing myself from deleting it and causing an infinite loop. —Alorael, who suspects time travel is impossible (or at least very difficult) because God is, among other things, a very careful programmer. I take it that you've discovered that two fingers on the trackpad let you choose twice as many targets for the spells? It took me a while to get it to work right, though. Aiming is tough when you only have distance ratios to work with. —Alorael, who never put enough points in throwing to be any good with the razordisks. The wand that summons explosive chitrachs is a lot of fun, though! Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I don't think anything substantial has been disclosed. A few opinions, maybe, but nothing that tells you much about the game. —Alorael, who also must caution that there have been a few changes since the posts made. I propose a new filter for Spiderweb. Henceforth all posts shall be processed by iSMRT before appearing on the forums. I have a new pet peeve: people who see Geneforge graphics and decide that A4 must be just like Geneforge. It really, really isn't. —Alorael, who also doesn't understand how anyone can like the Avernum graphics more than the Geneforge ones. Avernums 1, 2, and 3 are great games, but they are graphically apalling. Geneforge actually has monsters that can be distinguished from one another. It's certainly become quite the meme. Advertising blitz: $3 million Viral advertising: $1 million Legal fees: $750,000 Providing fodder for thousands of jokes: $4,750,000, apparently. —Alorael, who made up those numbers on the spot and spent no time considering their relationship with reality. Readers are advised to exercise caution when trying to create popular phrases for less than $5 million. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
