Don't work with non-SI units. Convert to meters and kilograms. I still have trouble with a hole in the corner of the tank. Is that a horizontal hole, a vertical hole, or both? It's a point-like hole, maybe, but it still needs a direction, because water can't leave a tank in a direction blocked by the tank.

—Alorael, who might as well set up an ideal tank of water, set it up on an appropriate stool, make a hole exactly large enough for one water molecule, and see how far the rather small stream goes. He should do it in a vacuum, too, so that the stream of molecules doesn't encounter intereference from air. Hm. High pressure vacuum to keep the water in liquid phase.

Why do people buy antiques, listen to early music played on period instruments, or demand original versions of anything?

—Alorael, who still can't quite wrap his miind around the idea of E1 with action points. He still has an old version with one man, one round, one action somewhere, although he hasn't touched it in years.

In a simple model, the water can be considered as a continuous stream of projectile particles and the usual kinematic equations hold. Let's suppose we're ignoring friction, the attraction between polar water molecules, and other more complicated forces, leaving nothing but collisions and gravity. Then the path of the water depends entirely on the acceleration of gravity and the velocity of a particle of water as it is forced from the tank by water pressure and/or gravity.

I don't know how to calculate the forces from pressure, and this approximation makes a lot of assumptions, and it requires more information about the hole. I think I may be missing something.

After rereading your first post, I think I'm overthinking this. You can find the time from ?y = (v_0)(t) + 1/2(g)(t^2) and the horizontal displacement from displacement from ?x = (v_0)(t). The only thing I'm missing is the velocity of the water coming out of the hole, which I still can't calculate from the information given.

—Alorael, who suspects he's both forgetting physics and missing easier methods.

Being a mod isn't only causing threads and sometimes offenders to die the death. You have to know when to do it. Here's a question to ponder:

The account Spidweb, member #1, posts something that can only be spam. Let's suppose it discusses mangos, requests for free registration codes, and clubbing baby seals. Now you have several choices.

a) Lock the topic.
b) Delete the topic
c) Move the topic to a forum you don't moderate so it's someone else's problem.
d) Leave the topic open.
e) Edit the post and leave the topic open.
f) Some combination of the above.

Furthermore, you must decide among the following:
a) Reprimand Spidweb.
b) Deliver an official warning of Dire consequences.
c) Request that an admin ban Spidweb temporarily.
d) Request that an admin ban Spidweb permanently.
e) Hire a hitman to figure out which Spidweb posted, go to his or her house, and break his or her fingers.
f) Hire a hitman, but don't tell him to stop with fingers.
g) Blame TM
h) Blame George W. Bush
i) Blame Jesus Christ.

I meant to imply that Remembrance can't be in remembrance of the founding of Avernum because the calendar is clearly from the surface. Empire might still appear in Avernum's calendar, but months like Evermoon, Icefall, Leafloss, and Suncome all refer to celestial bodies and seasonal phenomena that have no meaning in the caves. The months must be from the surface too, so unless Remembrance was the only one renamed, Remembrance is used on the surface as well.

—Alorael, who is suffering from egregious spelling mistakes.

I've always liked the automap in the unremarkable game Dungeon Master 2. It's a literal, physical map enchanted to record everywhere the adventurers have been, but it will only show a certain area in the vicinity of the party when it's viewed. Just like Avernum's automap!

So there you go. Farsight makes this magical map behave as though you'd viewed somewhere you hadn't actually been.

—Alorael, who would like to know if blessing and hasting before a sporting event is considered illegal use of magical substances and if there is a test for it.

Imagine people instead of cars. People moving forward tend to just move forward. People inching forward at a crawl are more likely to fidget, shift, bump into each other, get angry, and bang into things. The banging into things is pressure.

—Alorael, who acknowledges that this is a terrible way to explain pressure. It's a good picture physically and emotionally, though!

But why would the founding of Avernum be in calendar used on the surface?

[Edt: Lef a leter ou.]

—Alorael, who can't think of any reference to the seasons on the surface in A3. All of the weather names imply seasons that aren't found in caves, however, and Empire is an unlikely month in the nation of Empire-haters.

Accelerate fast enough and the intermingling of cars as well as the spray of bits of car in all directions will ensure that the uncertainty in your location and that of your victim are much greater than any of these pesky little phenomena.

—Alorael, who would rather find the distance to another car by knowing how fast he's going and how long it takes to get from where he is at a given time to where the other car was at that time.

They're not seasons. They're months, and there are eight of them. I can't remember which is the first in the year, but they go in this order:

Remembrance
Suncome
Radiane
Empire
Leafloss
Icefall
Frost
Evermoon

—Alorael, who doesn't know the holidays. Fortunately, he's sure someone else does. Try Google!

It's always good to add to the mod armory. We've got waveblades, rifles, and horrific images, and I think tentacles fit right in.

That would be a shame. SubTerra is a good game that doesn't deserve the fate of those abortions produced by Richard White.

When you're having a conversation of interest to only two parties, you don't do it loudly in the middle of an unrelated conversation. You do it elsewhere. That applies to forums too. You can't just skip posts without at least skimming them to verify that, yes, there's nothing worth reading there.

Ash, I don't think you're meaner. I think you're frustrated by what Alex has noted as a recent trend on the boards. Everyone gets fed up eventually, and at least you express it in a way that doesn't result in automatic asterisks.

—Alorael, who thinks the difference between individuality and running jokes are a lot like the difference between making skribbane references and being funny. There's a line between silly humor and irritation, and it has a lot to do with knowing when to bring something up and when not to. There's nothing wrong with the chicken gods in moderation.

Doing the same here would actually be greatly appreciated, as would not applying the term "retarded" as an all-purpose denigration.

—Alorael, who would like to give civility a chance on Spiderweb. Unless you can insult with Alec's skill, Djur's vitriol, or TM's sheer orneriness, you're not even contributing interestingly.
