To risk a foray back into the original topic:
Lord of Evil is Canada, which the US made an abortive attempt to invade in 1812. The three-pronged invasion planned went off badly, with the Detroit front failing badly and Detroit eventually surrendering to Britain, the Niagra front holding out only until October, and the Lake Champlain forces withdrawing without a fight. A successful Canadian invasion followed, with British troops eventually going so far as to threaten Baltimore.
In 1814, France began to crumble, allowing Britain to devote a greater military presence to Canada. After the Battle of Bladensburg in 1814, the building then called the Presidential Palace and now called the White House was burned to the ground -- and all that saved the rest of Washington was inclement weather. The only decisive American victory was the Battle of New Orleans, which occured some weeks after a cease-fire was signed.
The conquest and annexation of Canada continued to be the pipe-dream of American hawks for most of the 19th century.

JPG is an attack on good taste when you're using graphics with a transparent color. Trust me on this one.

Haven't seen either, want to see both. Also want to attack you in the eyes with a butter knife, too.
Are you one of those minimalist Internet comedians, or were you actually trying to make sense?

No one is buried in Grant's Tomb. The bodies entombed there -- Grant, his wife, and his favorite horse -- are above the ground.

David: War is indeed sometimes necessary, but it is a horrific monstrosity which must, in order to preserve human civilization, be used only as a last resort of self-defense. If we started a war to remove every tinpot dictator in the world, we'd end up throwing half the human population into anarchy.

Funny how people never put together the fact that we have the largest military budget per capita this side of Israel and that we have one of the least effective education systems in the free world...

He did do crazy experiments, true, but few of his experiments were utterly bereft of scientific merit. They all tended to be things that could only be hypothesized at using remotely moral methods; most of his experiments were on previously untrodden ground. Many of 731's experiments didn't make any sense as experiments and were thinly-veiled torture.

I might have been generalizing the mad science corps of Japan into Unit 731, and I apologize for that. Substitute whatever names are necessary and you still have a mostly true point, though.

The actions of Unit 731 were, IMO, more repugnant than what the Nazis did to their prisoners. The Nazis committed immoral scientific experiments, but they were still scientific experiments. 731 did a lot of 'research' which could have been done more practically in other ways, and even quite a bit of experiments which did nothing but affirm previous physiological truisms. Their work was much more describable as motivated by a wish to torture than a ruthless curiosity. This makes sense, as the Nazis tended to view the people they experimented on as subhuman by birth, whereas the majority of 731's guinea pigs were captured soldiers; it was a prevailing attitude at the time to view surrender in battle as an unrectifiable error. The only reason we remember the Nazi scientists better is because they worked on a much larger scale. The war with Japan being a sea war, they got many fewer prisoners; the limited resources and expert personnel of Japan prevented the sort of large-scale experimentation committed in Germany from occuring during wartime.
