I've never bothered. But I'm reasonably good at knowing for when to duck behind cover when there's a bag or some other heavy object being thrown my way, so that's good enough.

Hey, use http://www.imdb.com/ and you will see the film there. 1943 film, if I remember correctly.

Of course, I was lying. In all seriousness Der Fuehrer's Face is the equal of pretty much anything they've made in the past 50 years.

The other day my friend opened the door to me and remarked, "Ed, you look like you slept in a ditch." This wasn't an isolated incident. I feel my rakish good looks are possibly underappreciated.

Yes, but Cloud of Blades isn't really very good, particularly since by the time you'll be having that regularly cast on you you'll nearly always be heavily blessed.

Well, to a degree, but there's still going to be a fair amount of difference. Whilst it might not be as extreme as the difference between Old English and Modern English, it's still going to have changed a long way.

Y'know, if there's anything trying to learn 19 chapters of Tacitus in the original Latin has taught me, it's that 'common' and 'offensive' have always had basically the same meaning.

I have a suspicion that excluding languages no longer really in common parlance (which excludes Old Norse and if doesn't rule out Yiddish, will do in a generation or two) the best cursing language might be croation. It's about the only language I know or that uses -hra- with any regularity and that's just the right combination of the guttural and exotic.

Anybody expecting Spiderweb boards to be uniformly friendly is in for a surprise. Some people are naturally caustic. Some are even more so when writing, as there's less accountability. This doesn't make them bad people, or if it does not to a horrific degree.

I haven't read any of the RPs and have no desire to, so my comments will be short, since I can make no reference to details. Mervyn Peake is a good example of too much detail.

And whilst I'm also fascinated by history, many aren't. If you want to post it in Galactic Core, you'll get a few hours discussion on the matter before it gets the locking it so richly deserves.

The Stealth Tax in General

Taxes tend to screw over a section of the public that's relatively high earning but not exceptionally so. Those poorer justifiably pay less tax, the very rich and companies can shift money around and exploit loopholes so that some pay absolutely no tax and those in the middle are left to send a big cheque to the revenue.

The tax system at present just doesn't work. The rationale in Britain for not raising taxes to pay for university tuition by the Labour government was "The rich'll just avoid it." In which case, what's the point in bothering? If they're avoiding tax, that means the tax laws need reforming. Aside from which, Britain still has a relatively low tax burden, so it's not going to provoke mass emigration. Robbing businesses at gunpoint would be a more efficient system of tax than the present one.

I once spent an hour and a half learning Yiddish curses. It's strange that a language with a mostly German etymology and the odd bit of Hebrew thrown in manages to generate such good insults.

I don't find it easy to write right-to-left. Then again, so far as I know even societies with right-to-left alphabets tend to have a bias against lefthanders, despite the benefits that would entail.

If I write with my right hand, I can't get anywhere near coherent. However, I have pretty poor fine motor control and my writing with my left hand is abysmal and legible only because it's so large. On the other hand, I use the mouse with my right hand without problems.

What about the trend for the primary foot and whatnot to follow the hand? My left foot is the dominant one and so is my left eye, which causes problems as my right eye is more accurate by a couple of orders of magnitude.

TM, pretending to be gay is much easier to do if there are two of you. The method I use when I'm bored contains so many cliches you'd never think it'd work, but you should never underestimate the credulous stupidity of humanity.

Nobody denies that the terrorists are behaving in an immoral manner or that Israel is more democratic than its Arab neighbours. But that doesn't mean everything they've done is alright.

Sadly, the PLO, and Arafat in particular, is probably the main obstacle to peace, although to be honest I'm pessimistic about an end to troubles even if he loses all influence. The last chance for a relatively amicable settlement died with Count Bernadotte.

Two states aren't likely to work either, particularly if it follows the Security fence. A bi-national state does seem like the best option, but there's still the matter of convincing the Palestinians of this and repairing the inequality between Gaza and the West Bank and Israel proper.

Unfortunately, there's another problem on the horizon. Whilst Israelis have done a lot for the area, turning the Negev into farmland, this looks to be causing a water shortage (and farming doesn't contribute enough to the economy to be worthwhile maintaining at present.) There'll be trouble with Syria for water sources over this, unless something is done.

That would probably be more common if it weren't for children being stopped writing with their left hands until the middle of the 20th century. Since both my father and myself are left-handers, I'm certain one of my paternal grandparents must be. Nowadays, it's just a matter of genetics.
