I find that HP has just such a really generic storyline, characters, message, etc. that it becomes really predictable after a while. I don't see what all the hype is about. There is no real 'underlying profundity' that I can find and I do not understand how so many perfectly intelligent adults can read something intended for nine to fifteen year olds. I'm not suggesting that people should only read something if it expresses intelligent and unique ideas and thoughts, and I think there's a place for literary bubbly, but ten year olds don't read Good Night Moon, so why should thirty year olds read Harry Potter? I'm just depressed by families who have more videos than books and sixteen year olds who think Thomas Hardy wrote War and Peace and kids who automatically write off the works of Shakespeare, Homer, etc. as being 'moldy oldies'.
I really think adults reading kids' books contributes to the degeneration of literacy in the middle class.

As for Philip Pullman, at least he attempted to pull off something interesting and unique. I do agree with Arancaytar, though, about his need to reorganize his audience priorities.

(Read Arancaytar's post below for the idea which used to be here. I garbled the last part of this post. It was late.)

Grade nine was my last required year of FIZZ ED. I got a 53, if I recall correctly. I am inept at all sports requiring hand-eye co-ordination, particularly those of the table tennis/badminton ilk. They are another pet peeve.

And FIZZ ED teachers, especially short female ones with lungs of brass and track suits.

Oscar Wilde:

(Miss Redmark sits on her throne, accompanied by four Doomguards. ENTER Jenneke, Thissa, Frrrrrrr, Adrianna, Feodoric, and Michael.)

Jenneke: Hullo, is Miss Redmark in? Ah, there you are, Erika.

Miss Redmark: A man or woman who calls a lady by her first name when not fully acquainted has no right to be in the presence of said lady, let alone to live.

Jenneke: I am very sorry, Miss Redmark.

Miss Redmark: Apologies suit you worse than that plate mail you are wearing. What is that funny cat thing you are with?

Adrianna: That is our trusted compatriot, Frrrr, Miss Redmark.

Miss Redmark: Felines do not agree with me.

Michael: Do you mean that you are allergic to them, ma'am?

Miss Redmark: No, I mean that they are cold, unconscientious little things who would not humour an old lady.

Doomguard 1: More tea, modom?

Miss Redmark: Yes, I think so, Huxley. Pour some for these strange people as well. I must have time to examine them more fully. Tell me, you there, are you a girl or a boy?

Jenneke: Well, I do not know, to tell you the truth.

Miss Redmark: A man/woman must know his/her gender if he wishes to know him/herself. How do you ever know how to hold a salad fork?

Invisibility, naturally. Less ostentatious.

Oh, I think the power to invent immensely complicated riddles and to always speak in rhyme. That'd be fun.

You have to remember, however, that these are GAMING boards. Lots of hyper kids with short attention spans play computer games. Well-mannered, articulate adults aren't the only ones who use Spiderweb Software, and in fact, most RPGs are targeted at the 9-15 crowd. It is disappointing to see so many pre-adolescents so clueless about netiquette, but if you play computer games where combat is a fairly big chunk of the gaming experience, you can't expect that there won't be any hackn'slashing, bored little kids who appreciate the RPGs. Twelve year olds on sugar are not likely to discuss things in an 'orderly' fashion, especially since the net is one place where their parents aren't watching. They feel they can let loose here and forget about restrictions.

Thuryl; I am extremely miffed to see you leaving. You, along with X,seem to be the only two intelligent, instructive, tolerant and polite 'oldbies'. Good luck with where ever you're going.

And mind you, I don't pretend that I'm tolerant or polite either, let alone instuctive. ;)

Many crimes are commited by the young, yes, but that is no reason to interrogate every young person out late at night. As for the poor, sorry, what? Most crimes (and we're just talking about street crimes lke thievery, rape, murder, drug pushing, etc.) are commited, in my experience, by the insanely wealthy who have too little to do. Particularly if it involves hard drugs, rich teenagers tend to be involved.

Most of the ones I've encountered are completely neurotic and tight-arsed. Obviously it's part of their job, but God. Just because you're in your early twenties and driving a rental car at one in the morning they assume you're pissed. And a friend of mine got busted with a joint, and they acted like she'd commited a crime worse than murder, shoving her and interrogating her and that. Another person I know, he's six foot four, black, wears a long black trenchcoat, he was walking with his little girl out on some freezing day and he got stopped by a police car. Obviously they aren't all like that, but policemen always seem to pick on the poor and the young, therefore my friends and I are good candidates for victims of their abuse. The profiling is just too much.

I have a computer program which does all the calculations for me. Fun.
I know that I really need the birth times to match up so-and-so's online personality with their birth chart, but I find the sun signs hilarious to look at. I don't really believe people's charts match up with their personalities, but it is amusing to open up the charts and try to explain away x's personality trait. Pseudo analyses are the height of entertainment for me. I should have been a psychologist.

I was born on March 13, 1981, which makes me a Pisces. I have recently been reading the works of Howard Sasportas and become interested in astrology and the whole idea of stars and personalities having something to with eachother. Its not the kind of tosh you would find in magazine horoscopes, but the real science/art is quite interesting, having less to with fate than it does with feelings. Ha. Half of you are Scorpios and Leos.

ef; Rosycat may have influenced the way I act on the web, because she was the one who told me about these boards (met her on a Canadian University chatroom), but I believe she is female, straight, persnickety, and living in Waterloo or someplace. Also, what do birthdays have to do with her?

EDIT: And to clear up the whole mystery about the way I act, I've been lurking here for quite some time. <3

EDIT 2:
Really.
