I read the Fionavar Tapestry and part of the Sarantine Mosaic back in high school. Since then, I've read a lot of books that I liked better, but Kay topped the list of my favorite authors for at least half a year. :)

Now, that place belongs to Neal Stephenson, who rocks absolutely. I read Cryptonomicon, Snow Crash and Quicksilver in that order, so Confusion and System of the World are next.

But having started the Baroque Cycle (which covers the era between 1660-1720, very approximately), I now wish he would go on to do the same for some times between then and now. I could absolutely imagine him covering 1870-19something and the whole fashion with artificial world languages, Zamenhof, Schleyer, et al. It would fit the bill...

I just finished Childhood's End by Clarke in a single night. Very interesting book, and I'd definitely recommend it even if you tried 2001 and decided his writing is far too confusing.

Also, I started Fahrenheit 451 yesterday, but I've hit a bit of an impassé. See, I have this problem with nice characters dying (Clarisse, in this case), and I have to take a break before reading on. Worst was the indifferent banality of it - after four days of absence, the main character's wife vaguely says that "I think she's dead."

quote:
Wheel of Time will never end with quite the words that its author would have chosen.
Unkind souls might cynically comment that if another author continues it, then at least it will end at all.

But seriously, I don't want to diss Jordan or WoT now. Having to race to finish your life's work before you die is a terrifying prospect, and failing to do so is a depressing one. (Well, to an outsider. It being uncommon to be depressed after you die.)

So, I recently was sitting in boredom listening to music, when I realized a twist on the old Pirate v. Ninja debate. So, I come before you with a variety of examples, that if I may say, are very stereotypical of me. You'll note that I am basically adding fuel to the fire, a bit of variety never hurt, eh?

1. A pirate of the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean, with all of his stereotypical weaponry, battles a similarily stereotypical ninja to the death. Please state who the victor would be and why.

2. A stereotypical Viking raider operating primarily in the British Isles, with all of his stereotypical weaponry, battles a similarily Spartan you would find in the Battle of Thermopylae to the death. Please state who the victor would be and why.

3. A party member from Avernum/Exile at the end of the game who has learned all of the priest spells and mage spells duels in a magic competition with a Shaper/Lifecrater PC at the end of the game who can Shape all creations and cast all spells. Please state the victor and the reason why.

4. A stereotypical Japanese samurai with all of his armor and weaponry battles a knight who also has all of his armor and weaponry. Please state who the victor would be and why, keeping in mind they're both on horseback.

5. A stereotypical Aztec warrior with all of his stereotypical weaponry battles a similarily stereotypical Celtic warrior to the death. Please state who the victor would be and why. Please note that this is not Nethergate or Nethergate: Resurrection.

1.) Pirate, because Jack Sparrow rocks.

2.) Viking, because 300 sucked.

3.) Avernum, because Geneforge su---. Sorry, I meant because Avernum rocks.

4.) Samurai, because I felt bad about the ninja.

5.) Aztec, because I want to peeve Tyranicus.

Except that for the next two weeks, my day will be composed of 10 hours studying statistics, 3 hours travel, 2 hours eating, 8 hours sleeping and at least 2 hours working on stats exercises. Add it up, subtract it from 24, divide it by 3 (Polaris and xkcd) and you get the amount of time I could dedicate to Spiderweb if I distributed it fairly.

No, this is not a calculation error. It comes to negative 20 minutes. I grossly blew my budget on making this post. Buh-bye.

I don't see the point of listing specific composers or tracks when last.fm already does it for me.

1. There are two solutions here:

a) get a browser that doesn't wreak havoc with CSS directives, like Firefox or Opera.

b) wait until I have time to figure out what the hell IE is doing with that column width.

I'll try to get on it some time during the weekend, but no promises.

2. I have seen Ed's emails to Stareye, but they are only on the mod board. Suffice to say that they are alternating between pathetic pleading, ridiculous ranting, incomprehensible insults, and preposterous profanity.

I am having trouble imagining Ed capable of anything more than very pathetic phishing ("This is SPIDERWEB BOARD ADMINASTORATION! You acount has disabled. Send ur username and pass to be unbanned."), but who knows.

"More than a simple case of interest..." mh? You wish to use that hack yourself? :P

3. None of Dikiyoba's writings have anything more in common with reality than the gimmicks and insider jokes.

4. No. No, there is not.

5. No problem, you're welcome.
