Interestingly (although unsurprisingly) it seems a significant portion of the pets people here have owned have since passed on.

How does everyone else here handle living with and losing (possibly repeatedly, if they have several pets) a creature with a much shorter lifespan?

But is it cyclical? Some of the scientists seem to believe there might be a critical point at which the climate change accelerates itself.

To rephrase your argument, no, it isn't a problem as long as you are a cockroach.

It's not that redundant. A while ago, we had someone here who was deeply convinced he was a fox.

...

Anyway. I had a green budgerigar once, but he died several years ago at the proud age of 11. I had been thinking about getting a cat after that, but soon afterward I moved away. Current arrangements (student dorm, home on weekends) aren't very ideal for keeping pets, and my mother's allergic to cats anyway.

So it'll be some time before that dream is realized.

Unfortunately I have only pretty graphs, and I know enough of descriptive statistics to know that you can aggregate raw data to support almost any conclusion if your audience does not consist of statisticians themselves.

In a few months, I will learn more about inferential statistics and hopefully mathematical models and simulations. Until then, I'll just have to trust the climatologists that aren't getting paid by think-tanks...

I question that analogy, Vlish. The Shapers are a civilization. They have an ideology. National Socialism is an ideology. This ideology, by definition, would prevent peaceful, independent coexistence.

The Awakened, however, do not seek to coexist with the Shapers' racist ideology, they seek to coexist with the Shapers by changing their ideology (and they do have Shaper sympathizers, so this could work).

To fix the analogy, Jews and Germans can coexist when the Germans are not Nazis.

Seriously though, freezing water overnight ranks high among the silliest ideas I've ever heard. Aside from the density problem, they expend enormous amounts of energy both when freezing and melting the water, for what benefit exactly?

Unheated water can get pretty cold on its own, overnight.

None, but I'll let hard numbers speak.

PPP tallies my posts to 6731 (so at least that much were not deleted), which does not include the time between May 2003 to June 2004 on non-General forums (PPP2). Until those posts are properly archived, we can only estimate how much of the discrepancy they accounts for.

I don't think I've ever deleted one of my own posts yet, actually. The last few times I double posted, it wasn't on General. :P

Ahem.

I believe the topic is about books you have read, not books you are writing or attempting to write.

In that spirit, I encourage every would-be writer to start reading a few books first. It is very helpful.

I suppose really original names could be generated with that Markov Chain/travesty thing, if given a few additional conditions.

Scumpuke, or Blazefire.

The latter one is pure cheese, but the former one has some comic value.

Cryptonomicon. Since then I've read Snow Crash and Quicksilver by the same author, but while both were great neither astounded me the same as the first.

I get something like claustrophobia when the setting of a book is confined to a small area. The effect I liked most about Crypto is therefore that it appeared to set the whole world as the scene. Even though the story spanned half a century, and the author went into page-long rambles about obscure mathematical phenomena, it was fast-paced.

The story also managed to suspend disbelief completely. It's a bit refreshing, after so many years, to see a novel that actually contains computers without indicating the author as completely ignorant of technology. I can't speak for most of the mathematics (or, in fact, history), but all of these were described with a sense of realism that actually made me check Wikipedia to see which of the historical characters didn't exist and which did.

I last felt this wowed by a book when I read Lord of the Rings seven years ago.

Matches aren't that radical an idea. The chemicals they require have been used for a really long time, and I think Ermarian can get away with a sulfur-coated stick (which Wikipedia dates to 3500 BC in Egypt) without becoming too modern.

I don't know if those ancient matches still needed a spark or were friction-ignited, but making a spark is also really simple. You could argue it takes more than one action point in combat, but that's unnecessary detail - in any case, it's far less than a minute.

(Face it: Teleportation, but no fire? WTH?)
