It is part of a name Nija had when he first arrived here. He has since changed it and wants us to address him by the new name. I cannot think of any case in which someone had success doing that. People learned to live with their community names or waited until enough newbies were there and calling them by their new name that it changed on its own. Nija is not even a particularly derogative or ill-sounding name, so there's no good reason. As good reasons go, I do remember that on another board a guy called John* came back after some time of absence and asked to be addressed as Sarah* from now on. Which we did without commenting, and that was that. *Names changed. -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. I swear, another week of this and my brain will somehow spontaneously evolve a wi-fi adapter just out of withdrawal symptoms. Good to see you all. Got to go this evening. Hope I'll be back in a while. Salmon, haha. Arden/Nija/whatever you want to be called, haha, no. Laz, isn't that like assimilating the Borg? Riibu, *huggles*. Randomizer, unfortunately Octoberfest is a long way from where I am in Bavaria (and in defiance of the stereotype, I actually hate beer). Nikki, I tried it before but I didn't leave civilization as we know it (ie. broadband) behind for the wild jungles of Bavaria. (Crap, there's a lynch mob in lederhosen at the door.) Andra, I posted a bit on XKCD, though I now haunt the forum of Decorum more actively. *zips off to catch up with a week of threads and comics and emails* -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. I was actually using my free time during my absence to whip up a rudimentary census tool for exactly this. Regression and correlation went by on Wednesday afternoon, and I wanted some data to screw around with. quote:Mh. I'm slipping - I had a solid -10.0 on the social scale last time I took this. My posting rate has dropped to about one per day this month. I'm in the middle of a lot of things, and this will only get worse over the next half year. But that is all still to come. Closer ahead: A few weeks ago I was in Bavaria for a while for a course in statistics, and I'm going there for two more weeks now. The difference is that this time I won't have any internet, so you won't see me around for most of October. After that, I'll be back, but I probably won't have as much free time. I leave you all with a pretty non-Terragen sunset. -------------------- The Noble and Most Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. I'm not sure if this is what Synergy is referring to with these, ah, "new age buzzwords", but in my opinion one of the greatest shifts in thinking would be related to national identity. Our communication networks and economies are increasingly entwined and codependent. Couple that with the dwindling resources and overpopulation, which forces us to become more efficient and cooperative. This means that eventually we will have to stop being citizens of a nation and start acting as citizens of a planet. -------------------- The Noble and Most Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. I agree with Zeviz. Really I find it bewildering that technological progress is treated like something evil (or even something good). We can't decide not to invent, just as single-cellular organisms can't decide not to evolve. Regretting that our ancestors didn't have to worry about global warming isn't just wrong because on the other hand we don't have to worry about smallpox or plague. It's also as futile as wishing our childhood back. I do not say scientists need not show great responsibility with the impact of their inventions, or that a lot of evil couldn't have been avoided that way (see nuclear warheads). But we can't stop or go backwards; we can only steer. -------------------- The Noble and Most Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. Meh. Frying-pan/fire comparisons don't apply to this. Firstly, the end of the cold war didn't cause the beginning of the war on terrorism - it's good that the former ended, regardless of what came after. Secondly, the war on terrorism is essentially a personal crusade combined with a desperate need for a nationalist cause. Leave out the rhetoric about hating freedom and killing Western civilization for a moment. If US-made weapons and money stopped being delivered to every third-rate warlord who happens to be fighting a common enemy at the time, we would see things slow down very quickly. (Including the US war industry, of course, so this is unlikely.) This "war" is not so much against a real opponent (like the USSR) as against an inflatable sock puppet. Yes, I agree! Jeff should totally start opening up those PHP and Perl scripts and mess around with an application that already works like crap in a language he might never have used before to add features we've coped without for six years.
