I personally think that member # 7557 is being a complete idiot about this whole thing, but I would hope that people honor his/her request to not be called Nija. We have established a tradition of respecting this sort of request back when Nicothodes made the request to not be referred to as "cute." How dare you tell me I'm acting like a complete moron when you are doing exactly the same. You have made absolutely no case as to why this trash should exist or why me and the few others are being annoying. You yourselfs have almost all stated "no posting games" which such things as secret messages or mysterious coding laungage that could be included in the BoA or BoE editor forums and would be perfectly useble by PM anyway. Grow up! @LakiRa@: It was the name I choose some years ago to come here. Now I have no need of it. @Salmon: Just call me by my member number or Gauldoth. I don't mind which. -------------------- "I must admit, killing mortals is much easier then killing demons. It is part of a name Nija had when he first arrived here. He has since changed it and wants us to address him by the new name. I cannot think of any case in which someone had success doing that. People learned to live with their community names or waited until enough newbies were there and calling them by their new name that it changed on its own. Nija is not even a particularly derogative or ill-sounding name, so there's no good reason. As good reasons go, I do remember that on another board a guy called John* came back after some time of absence and asked to be addressed as Sarah* from now on. Which we did without commenting, and that was that. *Names changed. -------------------- The Noble and Ancient Order of Polaris - We're Not Yet Dead. This thread is just about the least spammy thing here. It's creative and interesting. Moreover, nearly everyone here seems to agree that it's not spam. I'd like to add another definition, (.)*2 = : It is correct to say that (.)*0 = 0. Hence :( = 0. So : + :( = :) . Also, : + :) = : + D = :D . Thus all of the equations in Jewel's post are correct. As it turns out, adding nothing can have a profound impact on many equations... -------------------- Lt. Sullust Quaere verum Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

quote:How dare us? You have been acting like a complete moron almost ever since you've been unbanned. As for why this "trash" should exist, it's good clean fun, and requires a bit of intellect as well. The reason posting games aren't allowed is because their main purpose is to boost post counts. This isn't the case here, and it actually is somewhat better than a massive flame war over [insert inflammatory subject] because it brings the community together. That is why you and the others are so annoying, because you're disrupting a perfectly good topic! As for growing up, you might want to try it Nija. Please stop cluttering the New Math thread with arguments. Member Formerly Known as Nija, we understand that you don't want to be Nija anymore, and will honor your request (or not) depending on individual whim. That's about the best you can get from Spiderweb, and certainly the best you'll get if you you're abrasive about it. Everyone else, please be quiet and let the logicians work. —Alorael, who doesn't want to have to lock half a topic. That's never fun to arrange. I find all this New Math a bit confusing, but it's definitely not spam. It's vastly more intellectual than any flame war or spamfest could ever hope to be. By the way, sorry for the gargantuan spam post earlier. As interesting as these equations are, I feel that we have spent too much time focusing on these particular formulae. In the mean time, I propose a solution to our vector problem. The symbols '{' and '}' will be used to denote vectors. Thus the Predator Principle still stands. In addition to this, I propose that the two states <> and >< are equivalent and can be interchanged at any point. -------------------- Lt. Considering the fact that clicking graemlin icons while posting just inserts the proper characters, I think that's fairly obvious. I'm a little confused by the plus signs, but maybe the UBB is flexible. Or broken. —Alorael, who has a better solution: no graemlins. No emoticons. No use of pseudo-markup. If you want to express yourself, stick to standard typographical usage and exercise your right to the interrobang and irony mark. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

This thread is getting far too complicated, so I'd like to return to an earlier question: quote:???? = ._ (by my earlier definition) quote:Let's define 0 to be additive identity. (This means X + 0 = X for all X.) This allows us to define subtraction using the following method: X - X = 0 for all X Thus, your problem can be solved as follows: ! - ... = ... + . - ... (by definition of !) = . + ... - ... (commutativity of addition) = . + (... - ...) (don't remember the property) = . + 0 (by definition of -) = . (by defition of 0) quote:To do this, we first have to define multiplication. Let . be a multiplicative identity. (X * . = X for all X) Now we can solve this: !! * ! = !! * (... + .) (by definition of !) = (!! * ...) + (!! * .) (by associativity? of multiplication and addition) = (!! * ...) + !! (by definition of *) = (!! * (.. + .)) + !! (by definition of ...) = (!! * ..) + (!! * .) + !! (associativity, and clearing extra parenthesis for readability) = (!! * (. + .)) + !! + !! (by definition of .. and definition of *) = ((!! * .) + (!! * .)) + (!!!!) (assosiativity and definition of !!!!) = (!! + !!) + ? (by definition of * and definition of ?) = ? + ? (by definition of ?) = ?? (by definition of ??) As an extra exercise, we can prove that X * 0 = 0 for all X: X * 0 = X * (. - .) (by definition of -) = (X * .) - (X * .) (by associativity) = X - X (by definition of *) = 0 (by definition of -) And just to make thing more complicated, let's define X * ._ = X for all X. (This means that all multiplications in our system will be modulo ._ or, for those who prefer boring numbers, modulo 256. (Considering that . has been defined to have all properties of 1, we can extrapolate ._ to be equivalent to 256 in the regular numbering system.) quote:spam <=> I am bored. PS Ah the memories of college homeworks... :) -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill.
