Al Gore has won the Nobel prize for peace. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth among all the anti-HCGW-ers. Even if one grants the justice of his cause, though, has he personally really done enough to advance it, to deserve a Nobel prize? Did his movie really attract that much attention or convince that many people? Missing the US presidency doesn't look quite so bad on a resume that can list an Oscar and a Nobel prize. I don't think anyone has ever won both those before, have they? -------------------- We're not doing cool. We're doing pretty. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

Gore technically didn't personally win the Oscar. His movie's director and music did. —Alorael, who doesn't consider the Nobel Peace Prize a prize for a person who has promoted peace per se. It's a prize that's given out in order to promote good. The committee must think global warming is a problem big enough that giving recognition by giving the prize is the right thing to do. If this guy can win: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasser_Arafat I'm not sure I'd be all that proud. Seems to me the prize is more of a political statement than a mark of true achievement. If anyone, Carl Sagan deserved the Prize for his "uplifting criticism" of Humanity more than Gore, but he wasn't political enough I guess. Read "A Pale Blue Dot", and tell me that his book was less impressive than Gore's "Truth" on the subject of preserving the Earth for future generations. Maybe he needed more swimming Polar Bears. Towards the end of his political career Arafat worked hard to end the turmoil in that region... -------------------- Lt. Sullust Quaere verum Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Actually, it would be fine to have one, but it would merit it's own thread, and I believe each participant would have to provided a notarized agreement to not resort to ad hominem debating styles, plus a $1000 bond as an act of faith. I'll hold the agreements and bonds, which is why it is an act of faith, rather than good faith. -------------------- Synergy, et al - "I don't get it."
