It's a custom in my family, although we're not too religious otherwise. The last time any of us went to church was Easter, I think. That makes the meal prayer all the more surprising, but it's more of a matter of proper family unity than any religious ritual.

I myself am soundly agnostic, and when I've eaten alone, I've never prayed.

Seriously, are we having a retro summer on Spiderweb? It feels like back in '03 all over again. Ah, the days... ^_^

*notices this is RWG, not General* Well, Okay then. This forum has always been a little odd.

OOC: The past tense of "to see" is "saw", not "seen", Spring. Unless it's an Australian dialect, but I've never seen anyone else here use it.

Also, it's time to bring Melóra into the party; or I'll be sneaking after you the whole time.

IC: It was said that the Shadow elves worshipped Silence as a goddess. That was untrue, but it was plausible - Melóra's approach had been marked by less than a whisper in the cold air.

Still, her presence did not go unnoticed - not when one of the guardians of the camp possessed the Sight. As she drew near, Caecus seemed to sense her presence and reacted immediately.

With a hissing curse and the hollow clanking of iron, the spirit rose up, his twin blades drawn. They gleamed with an unearthly light under the crescent moon, and it seemed as if they moved the armored harms that held them, rather than the other way around.

Fortunately for her, Caecus made a mistake. Perhaps due to his long solitude his state had imposed upon him, he did not think of rousing the sleeping party members, but rather moved quickly toward the place he had felt her presence, his swift stride belying the hulk of his armor.

Melóra, too was swift to react. Even as Caecus approached her, she stepped to the side and raised her hands. Órin'fíer gurán!
The low-level confusion spell had the desired effect: While Caecus' mind was too subtle to be thoroughly addled, his powers were numbed. Temporarily blinded, Caecus was disoriented for a moment, and Melóra rushed past him toward the other Undead, who was fast approaching.

Encumbered by a physical body, Cyrus was not as quick as Caecus, and Melora was able to disarm him. Putting a stranglehold on his iron neck, she raised a dagger to his visor.

"Fool," she whispered. "I mean you no harm. But make a wrong move and you are dead." Should have put that more tactfully, she reflected. Cyrus, unfazed by this rather hollow threat, wrenched free. Melora attempted to use another spell to incapacitate him, but before she could succeed, the other one had caught up with them, his sight restored. Seizing her roughly from behind, the iron strength of the armored ghost immobilized her. Cyrus aiding his companion, the two Undead bundled the nightly intruder together and dragged her off to the camp.

OOC: Seemed the most realistic. Melora might be powerful, but she can't take someone on in melee.

OOC: Melora is not part of the party - the woman you mean would be Lisha, Dave's character. The shadow elf is well-hidden nearby, and you wouldn't spot her probably. I'll bring her into the open tomorrow, no time for more action right now.

OOC: It's moving too fast for me, and I'm a fast reader. I suggest a one post per day rule - the story will benefit if we have time to think.

IC:

Melóra had slipped out of the tavern as soon as she heard the commotion. Silent as the shadows that were her namesake, she had crept around the inn to watch the happenings from a safe distance. Fingering a throwing dagger between her fingers, she silently cursed its inferior manufacture - the most finely crafted human blades could not keep up with the metal forged below.

It seemed that the Undead and the villagers were having some kind of disagreement. Idiocy again. The Unliving are different from demons - when not guided by a master or their own hunger, they have no evil intent. She hesitated, remembering the dread Wraiths of the desert, in the lost temple of Shanaar... a razor-thin smile formed on those cold lips. Usually anyway. But then, they've been tormented without rest for a thousand years. Surely you can't hold it against them if they get a little testy.

A nauseating dizzyness rushed through her - a surge of Life magic. Where a strange monk had been standing with the skeleton before, a large green hedge now surrounded them, hiding them from view.

A hooded figure - a woman, unmistakably lithe - advanced toward the hedge.

---

Melóra did not stay to find out more. Slinking back into the tavern, she paid the barkeeper who had not noticed her absence yet - she was honest when she felt like it - and left for the nearby woods, turning her back on this forsaken town.

What in the thousand names of dread Yroel has brought me here in the first place?

Ah yes. Treasure.

Melóra had been wandering the surface for decades, aimlessly. When she had left the Caverns, the Taint had been strong upon her, the marks of the Unnamed engraved on her spirit. It had given her power, and it had nearly cost her her sanity. But somehow, by sheer force and through long years of study she had managed to subdue the Taint - now, she was master of the shadow that the Unnamed had set within her, not the other way around.

Working as a part-time assassin and a mage, she was able to make a good income, but her ambition was treasure hunting. Not silver or gold, naturally - such things were easy to get if one knew, traded with and murdered the right people. She was not interested in King Albert's trinkets - if the legends were true, the treasure she was hoping to find here surpassed such things by far.

---

While she was wandering through the forests, deeply in thought, she suddenly heard noises in some distance. She recognized the Undead and the hooded lady from earlier.

...

At the time, I was a freshman in college, without worldly goods or means of my own. A child at that time (and I wouldn't have wanted to abort, though I support a woman's right to choose) would have seriously affected and, I believe, limited my life at the time. Also, while my partner and I at the time were pretty serious, it was a lot more of a commitment than either of us were willing to make at the time. Anyway, something I don't recommend if you can avoid it. Redundant systems are the way to go!

Oh, that's different. I thought it would be more recent.

I remember getting goosebumps all over, and my dad had to go through that level while I was watching, because I couldn't.

But the most scary things when I was little I just can't remember. My mother tells me I had some trouble with seeing weird patterns in some everyday things. Apparently, I screamed at the top of my lungs upon seeing a desktop lamp, and I always claimed the 'P' in some kind of alphabet poster over my bed was looking angry.
Oh, and I saw a face in the toilet flushing grip. There was a time my mother had to put a sock over it or I wouldn't go to the bathroom. ^_^
At the age of 2, I ran down a corridor in the apartment building we lived in (that was in Manhattan), rounded a corner and saw a towering Mexican with a sombrero, etched as a shadow against the sun behind him. For some reason, this image was so terrifying I turned around and ran back screaming. The poor man was awfully embarassed. >_<

OOC: Is it my character he's been ogling, or is it Sherlock's? Just for clarification.

Edit: It's Arancaytar. No buildings. And, given you joined more than a year ago, you should know. :P

Also, Harf'er'melóra is commonly named just Melora while among humans - but you can leave that as it is.

IC will follow this evening; I'm busy now.

Also, it seems like RPs flourish bi-annually. Two years ago we had Baltazar, and that worked, then we had the Civil War, which worked even better, last year we had a load of failed attempts, and now this. Amazing.

Don't. Only the ones that are fairly well-known get names, and all objects (nowadays) are named by a code number when they are first discovered. 2003 stands for the year of discovery, the rest I'm not sure about. Distant stars (that aren't visible with the naked eye) sometimes have names like this as well.

While we're talking about planets, did you hear that rather than 10, it's looking like we'll soon have just 8? ;)

OOC: Marvin, you need to make your own character instead of taking somebody else's (Arachnid's in this case). Whether the actions you described for Cyrus have actually happened is up to Arachnid's judgement. :)

Gah. And beaten to the punch by two days, too. The next RP is belonging to the Weather Balloon.

Character Description:

They say that there are places deep in the foundations of the world, where nameless things gnaw the roots of time. Madness takes those that come upon them.

Her people had lived beneath the ground for as long as the stories and songs remember, and the darkness that dwells below had changed them. If the tales were true, they had dwelled in the forests once, at peace with themselves and with nature. When the great cataclysms had driven them underground, they had adapted. Hewing huge caverns out of the bedrock of the world, building gigantic stone cities, they had begun their culture anew. It was a culture as barren and hostile to life as the caverns they lived in. In the absence of light, they became pale and their hair shone with an inner light.

Where even the boldest of the Dwerrowfolk did not dare delve, the Shadow elves went without hesitation. Their eyes adapted to the dark, and they saw better in it than in daylight; they were cruel themselves, they did not fear the cruel things that dwelt below. And some of them ventured too far.

--

It had been in the folly of her youth, before her sixtieth birthday. Seeking to explore a new cavern, she had gone far from the city of her tribe. Hearing strange drums in the deep and voices at the edge of her awareness, she had been drawn onward, deeper into the chasms.

Her tribe had given her up for dead. Even the cautious fell victim to the many dangers of the Caverns, and the child had been known for her recklessness.

When she returned a week later, she was changed. What she had experienced below, she could not or would not tell, but from this day her skin was dark as ebony and her hair even brighter than that of her people. Her encounter with the Nameless Things, which the Shadow elves worshipped as holy, elevated her to a position of respect and fear. But she did not want respect, and she had forgotten what fear was.

And so she had left soon after that, taking only some provisions, her bow, and the name that the elves had given her when she returned:

Harf'er'melóra, which means "touched by shadow".

---

(OOC: Yes, a female character this time. And a drow, what is more.)

IC:

What is this - a reunion of shadows?

The tavern had seemed innocuous enough from the outside - her senses had dimmed in the time she had been above ground. Once she had set inside for some time, however, she had begun to sense the ones around her. Certainty came only after the first one caused a commotion by not holding on to his drink.

Skeletons. Stupidity's seat must be in the bones. She rolled her eyes.

The second one she noticed after that. Alerted by the uproar, he had cast his presence around him to see - he seemed to be physically blind.

The necromancer - she thought it was a necromancer - was next. Remaining utterly unperturbed by finding that the patron next to her had just turned out to suffer from severe amyotrophia, she went on to drink her ale as if the company of skeletons was an everyday occurence.

Quite a crew for such a little tavern, she thought, mentally including herself in this group. Wondering if she should come forward, she decided to remain unnoticed for a while yet - after the shock of the Undead, she was not sure how the townspeople would take a Shadow elf.

OOC: And so it goes...

Now that I think of it, afaik neither you nor Spring witnessed a truly successful RP. O_o I've only seen two or three in my time here, and a fourth (Valley of Thunder) was well on its way to becoming one, but didn't reach conclusion.

Well, as they say, practice is everything. I wouldn't give up writing just yet. You might enjoy the next RP... ;)
