Sweet 16 to you. You'd be allowed to drive a truck under 10,000 lbs in the US now.

Who? Otto von Bismarck, wearing nothing but his Pickelhaube and carrying a brass bassinet.

What? The first Lambada ever.

Where? The Congress of Berlin.

When? 1878

Why? Too sexy!

Define obscure nationality. There's Finns, Brits, Germans, Swedes, a Peruvian, i think,...
all well-known countries.
To me, obscure nations are countries like Nauru, Kiribati, Bhutan, Andorra, the Comoros Islands, or the Disputed Zone. If anybody's from there, please stand up and be counted.

Maybe he's originally from Kiribati. 'cause July 14th is Kiribati Independence Day!!!

More likely, though, he's referring to Bastille Day in France.

I'd much prefer a larger federal government that offers more services but whose leadership isn't as susceptible to political upheaval. But then, I'm not an US citizen. The IRS likes to hassle me every time i travel outside the country.
Happy 11th of July.

Hmm. I read a commentary on Kant's Critique of Taste once, and there was a statement in there that really struck me. I'll have to paraphrase it, though.
Basically, it stated that people tend to express their tastes in the negative. They will always start declaring their taste by denouncing anything, but not really state what they truly like.
So I've undertook to not denounce things in matters of taste, but simply stick by what i like, for whatever reason, regardless of popular opinon.
Oh, and the old german adage:
"Das ist euer Bier" (roughly, that's your problem).

Edit: The drinking age in France (officially) is 16. But you can buy much younger.

Disco Stu likes Disco Music. He's said so himself. But Disco Stu also doesn't need to advertise.

As for the Russians attacking Finland:
Although it is very unlikely, nothing pulls a reeling country together like a war, as GW has shown us so beautifully.

It seems to have very little to do with them. They're present, yes, but there's so much more that hasn't got anything to do with them.

Spiderweb is a community. In every community, there will be strife. There is only so much you can say about the games that hasn't been said a dozen times. In a community, people hold differing opinions. Some take their opinions more seriously than others. Why so much fighting?:

Because someone has to clean toilets or sell you french fries. That and bad education system, degradation of values, and so on.

What's with the fascination in the US in reenacting old battles/wars?

Apparently, mammary tissue (so-called "Milk Ridges") form in human embryos before sex is determined. You see, early on during pregnancy, an embryo has a chance of being either sex. So male nipples just attest that we are indeed mammals.

As for the Finnish conscription thing...I've done a bit of reading, but haven't come to an entirely satisfactory answer. Germany has a similar system of mandatory military duty, but their numbers were drastically reduced at the end of the cold war due to various agreements with both Russia and the US. Finland is not a member of NATO, and thus could not count on their support in case of Russian aggression. Finland is now contemplating joining NATO, and is thus considering reducing their military to a more professional, highly-trained force which would be required by NATO. Why this hasn't happened in the last 14 years, I couldn't tell you. Apparently, they're also concerned with their chances of regaining the Kurelian Isthmus. I'm sure that will happen right after Russia returns East Prussia to Germany.
It's all well explained here:
http://www.mil.fi/esittely/historia/index_en.html
and here:
http://www.mil.fi/tiedotus/julkaisut/finland_and_nato/index.html
Any Finns have any answers on this?

Could someone explain to me how blood types work, in simplistic terms? I've never understood that.
(And please, i'm not interested in what the Japanese read into them).
Thank you.

As for the casualty figures, does that include the long-term effects? I understand the cancer rates there are still abnormally high this very day.
As for the targets: http://www.dannen.com/decision/targets.html
They were thinking of much worse, including the emperor's palace and Kyoto, the traditional capital of Japan.
If you're running low on countries, just think South and Central America. Especially Nicaragua (briefly home to an US dictator), and Guatemala. You could pick almost every country in the western hemisphere. Almost.

So, is this going to be one of those hello threads where the person introducing themselves never ever posts again and we just squabble on endlessly about what we'd like to see in a message board? 'cause it sure looks like that.

And, yes, RoR, do join Desp. Djur needs a harem so he can pine some more.

And out of curiosity, what's the official status of Motrax? Banned, temp. banned, MIA, ...? If i'm being nosy, ignore me.

Hey Lemur,

I don't know or care what kind of beef you have with Imban, but giving out home addresses and phone number is pretty weak. I respectfully ask that you take that out of your signature.

As for Japan, let's not forget about the Russo-Japanese War of 1904/5, which was truly the first modern conflict. It was the first instance of trench warfare and overwhelming use of artillery. Kinda the blueprint for WW1.

As for the atom bomb, it wasn't entirely necessary. It was as much a show of force against the Soviets as it was intended to break the Japaneses resistance. Japan could have easily been occupied, as their navy was pretty much destroyed and most major cities already levelled. But it would have taken longer and probably cost a few more American casualties.

The opions vary on what exactly trolling is, but it is usually considered posting made-up stories and/or belittleing members.

As for my compliment...hmmh, yes.
X is indeed a fountain of interesting information and has made me do further reading on many a subject. Alec and Djur are both full of useless (=interesting) information as well. I like Sir David's intestinal fortitude. I like Nye in general, but I still think he's an oldbie in sheep's clothing. Just can't figure out which one. And Rosycat and RoR for their punkrockness. I'll stop now.

Don't you all ever get tired of beating on Sir David, and Sir David, don't you ever get tired of being beaten on? It's always the same thing: Sir David doesn't read what's been posted, merely skims it, picks something he doesn't agree with, post something that a lot of people don't agree with, and said people proceed to denounce David in various insulting ways. I see no end to this.

Heh. Speedo in the US usually means tiny men's bathing suit, and automated/camera radar traps are for the most part not in use. Cops still have to chase you down to give you a ticket, so the likelihood of you getting a ticket on a highway is very slim.

As for Japan, I'd just like to add that it was the US's very own Admiral Perry who forced them to open up to the world with gunboat diplomacy. Who knows what would have happened had they been left alone.

As for the whole Motrax debacle:
I find it damn ironic that people get so worked up about political discussions in a place where most of the members aren't even of voting age. Sure, what he did wasn't right, but, Alec, come on, comparing it to terrorism sounds like something G.W. Bush himself would say. The poor guy did it because he cared, not because he didn't.

Djur actually had a nice quote in another thread about the level of investment everybody had in this board, and how we should all just take it down a few notches. I concur wholeheartedly.

In Italy, people don't drive 8-foot-wide hunks of Detroit steel. And they're used to mopeds over there.
I own a car, but usually ride my bike around town. I've been hit twice, both times from behind. So be careful and wear a helmet. [/mom]
