Oy! What's all this? Bunches of different languages, and histories, and things I've never heard of!

Are you all making this up? Is all of this featured in game, but silly 'ole me just missed it? Are there companion books or guides that can help me understand just what the stink you're all talking about?

It seems the games are far deeper and richer than I first thought.

Also, I very much support the idea of assembling a solid record of history, peoples, and geography of the lands in the Avernum games. I've been considering the possibility of perhaps making scenarios based in the past, on the historical events.

One of the monsters I summoned with a spell once started picking up scrolls off the ground and began blasting away at enemies with 'em. I think it was a ghoul or something like that. Was I hallucinating, or would it be possible to lay out a buncha scrolls, summon monsters, and suddenly have a small army of scroll-using, lightning-slinging creatures at your command?

If you're going to be ganking people's horses, I think it's be easiest to set it up with an info pop-up box that shows up when you enter a barn-like structure in an enemy fort or lair or something.

It'll say something like

"Wow, man! You found the stables. Are you gonna gank these dumb bandits' horses or what?

1. Gank 'em!

2. Nah.

3. Partay DOWN!!! Woo!"

and depending on which option you pick, you could suddenly find your PC's atop some horsies, suddenly find that nothing's changed, or suddenly find that a wild party has broken out in the middle of the bandit lair for some reason.

Massive army combat? in Blades of Avernum

It is possible to let the player influence the direction of a battle in that fashion? How would it be done, though? I'm having visions of coding lessons from tech class.

If The Bandit King is killed in Fight1, then enemies in Fight2 = 23.

Meh. Maybe the manual that comes with BOA will outline such things.

Thanks for the input, everyone! Now, another question because it doesen't feel right to start another topic so soon:

Do you think there would be ANY way to make the First Aid skill useful? Tone down the kit weight, increase # of uses, increase amount of healing gained? You know, stuff like that. Or will I just have to pepper the dungeons with healing potions to help keep the player from dieing horribly?

999 sounds like a fine damage cap to me. A1 was kinda odd in that only high magic scores or a high bows skill could produce hit over 100, so I found myself constantly doing 90-something damage in melee.

Hooray! Now to plan work on a terrible, armored, acid-spitting boss monster with huge amounts of hp!

How would YOU handle a battle between massive armies?

Personally, I'd like to find some way to plunk down, maybe 5 to 10 groups for each side on the worldmap (not including Your Adventurers), just to create the illusion of massive armies. The side you're with would be harmless to you, like the wandering groups of friendly soldiers you sometimes encounter in the avernum games, but walking into a group of opposing side (this is on the worldmap, now) would trigger one of those types of battles where you get aided by some friendly NPC's, only with a lot more enemies and friendlies than usual. I'll have to keep enemy archers and spellcasters low in numbers, because enemies with ranged attacks can often attack you WAY before you can attack them, and large numbers of 'em would make the battles very hard to win. The Player's group of adventurers are like the Special super forces commander guys, or something, and they're spearheading the battle, y'know? Of course this kind of epic war would only take place late in the game, when the Player can probably handle it.

A problem would be: how do I keep the friendly groups of soldiers on the worldmap from wandering off and spoiling the illusion of two armies clashing? I could get them to stay put, and just have the enemy come at the side the player's on, maybe?

Also, you could wipe the friendly groups of soldiers off the worldmap when all the fighting's done, right? accompany it with a popup info box saying they packed up 'n went home?

On the subject of horsies, would it be possible to change the horse graphics to some other kind of critter? I remember that Giant Lizards were often used as mounts down in Avernum...

One more problem. I was going to try to get help from spywareinfo.com, but now I cannot access it. My connection keeps failing, despite the fact I could access it just fine yesterday.

Could the programs that afflict my computer be so organized and clever? I hope not.

Any suggestions on how to get around this problem?

Would any of you be so kind as to answer a couple of questions?

How much does a decent laptop go for these days, and how well would your average spiderweb software game fit/play on it?

Also, does anyone know how to diagnose Asperger Syndrome? Some people think I might have it.

There's this thing that keeps getting into my computer, and it keeps spitting porn ads at me.

Don't get me wrong, from time to time I may get an urge and go looking, but I don't want porn launched at me every bloody minute.

I've tried using ad-aware 6, but it seems to be slipping past it now. AA6 got rid of it the first time, but it just keeps coming back whenever I try to use the internet.

Someone, please, help me.

Selling Spiderweb products abroad in General

It seems that all you need to buy spiderweb games is knowledge of their existence, the required funds, and a lot of patience, for it takes a while for things to get mailed to you.

Also, praying that the cold winter temperatures do not destroy the game disc couldn't hurt. Unless the powers that be really hate you, and do the opposite of whatever you pray for. In which case you should pray that the disc does explode, and then you could pray that I never ever get rich.

I know it's confusing, almost as confusing as time warps and space bendings, but it should work out for the best. Either that, or the dimensional shamblers should be arriving at your home momentarily to devour you.

Hey everybody! Who wants to play the "Make absolutely no bloody sense" game with me?

1. Do you think you'll be able to make your own special little holiday dealies, and new calendars, maybe, even, in BoA?

2. what sorts of programs is it necessary to have if you want to make new monster or character graphics? photoshop? Some kinda really expesinsive program? Or are Avernum graphics the sort of thing you can pull off with paint, or that other drawing thing?

Questions about the world that the Avernum series takes place on/in. in Blades of Avernum

Further questions:

Would it be possible to create plateaus, with straight-up unclimbable sides? Plateaus that you could walk on top of if you found a passage onto them, or had a flight orb or magic carpet to fly onto them with?

How about bridges? Could you make a bridge over a canyon that you could also walk under, if you bothered to get down into the canyon? Could one make more 'Natural' bridge graphics, like arched stone bridges, or sagging rope bridges, or is that the sort of thing you should talk about in pop-up descriptions of the area?

Do you think it would be very hard to make an event that completely changes a town from a perfectly fine little burg/fortress into a smouldering ruin? Example: What happened to Fort Remote in A1.

Another tiny thing: Could you adjust the names of certain attributes, abilities and spells, even if you can't change their effects?

I have another question. A question about certain enemies' special abilities, like how haakai shoot acid, some spiders shoot webs, basilisks have a stony gaze, and mung rats/demons have special rays. Would it be possible to transplant these skills into a new sort of monster, with different graphics and attributes and everything?

Ex: a medusa-esque critter, and some acid spitting bug monsters I've been thinking about, among other things.

Kindly keep it civil, alright?

How large is it? Has it already been thoroughly explored? Did The Empire rule the entirety of the surface world, or just a continent or two? Is there a possibility of discovering new lands and new peoples over the horizon? If you go deep enough down in Avernum, past the Vanhatai lands, will you eventually pop out on the opposite side of the world?

Also: Can you create brand new abilities and stick them in objects other than your standard mind crystal, like an ancient scroll or pendant? (I'm aiming for super-psionic mind control, here.)

At first glance, I'd say E's all around, but some people might have a problem with all the killing. You have to admit there's tons of good ole-fashioned slaughtering going on, but it's so primitively rendered that they might just manage to get away with it.

The angry christian fundamentalists might have a problem with all the scary monsters and demons running around, unless, perhaps, you inform them that you (usually) kill them off...

Do you think Jeff should get his games prefessionally evaluated and given ratings at all? Would a very official and legit-looking rating on a game make it more appeasing?

Any other related questions you can think of?

Goblins. Definitely goblins. A bunch of insane, chattering little idiots who'll fight you to the death with sticks and stones. I love 'em. It's a pity they're so underpowered. When I get Blades of Avernum, I'll be sure to throw in some kinda badass goblin chieftain, and some goblin archers, and some goblin priests. With leadership, diversification of skills, and organization, the goblins shall become a force to be reckoned with.

They won't seem such an easy enemy when you've got 50 of 'em charging your town, waving spears and firing arrows, setting fires and releasing the cave cows and giant lizards from their pens. Maybe I'll have 'em ride on giant spiders, too. Yeah, spider cavalry scales the towns' fortifications on eight legs to ambush the guards in their guardhouses and to open the gates to let the rest of the warband in.

Or something like that.

After the Geneforge and Avernum series have run their courses, What might happen next?

More puzzle games, perhaps. Maybe a new adventure game set in a different place, maybe even in space! Jeff hasn'e done space much yet, has he?

Maybe He'll just take some time off. Perhaps that's the very purpose of the 'Blades of' games, that we amuse ourselves for a while and let poor Mr.Vogel get some sleep and teach his daughter how to fire a grenade launcher.
