Due to depressing events beyond my control, I got slowed down for a few days, but I am currently putting together the first release candidates for Mac Blades of Avernum.

The editor will ship with the source. It won't be clean or well commented, but it will be there.

Of course, no source for the game.

There will be $10 off for registered Blades of Exile users.

The editor documentation is about 160 pages long and is in both Word and .pdf format.

The editor ships separately from the game. In addition to saving us massive bandwidth, it makes it easier for me to update the editor when needed.

There will be a contest. It will be basically just like the contest for BoE.

We are heavily reworking the scenario evaluation online form to make it just generally more secure and better.

I should have put up new screenshots a long time ago. Sometimes, I'm just dumb.

Forgetting to put up screenshots is not dumb. It's just being forgetful.
Creating a crappy movie, loosely based on a video game series, that costs $150,000 to make and being surprised when you only get about $30,000 in ticket sales is dumb. I won't say who did it or what the name of the movie is, but I'll say that the company's name rhymes with FlareEnix and the movie's name rhymes with Whinal Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
I hope you weren't intending to do something like that.

Are you going to remove the damage cap? Please?

Aside from agreeing about Whinal Fantasy, this is some nice information that should keep the noobies from begging for at least a little while.

Is there a script limit, like there was a node chain limit in BoE?

Can't wait for the release.... Must control.....

Really though, i can't wait. I've been checking almost daily for signs of BoA's release. It's kind of sad I know but this really is going to be one of the best. I don't want it to be rushed, and know it can't, but I also don't want to wait anymore. It's like an eternal battle in my mind, slowly driving me to insanity, well, further in.

I wish I had gotten in on the beta testing, but I probably wasn't picked due to my lack of experience with the BoE editor.

What is the damage cap?
And I agree, the Whinal Fantasy movie is BAD BAD BAD!
The SNES/PS games are *Put in random number over 900000000 here* times better! I have acses to FF1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 10-2 (Yes I am an addict).

I have a feeling there is an tremendous amount of grammar errors in this post...

I think he meant, what does it mean to have a damage cap? What does it do?

The damage cap puts a limit on the amount of damage one hit can do. So, let's say your level 50 fighter wielding a Black Halberd hits a goblin and assassinates the bejeesus out of it. You might normally do 1500 damage to the wimpy little goblin. A damage cap of 199 (as I believe we had in A3; it was lower in A1 and A2) means that the 1500 damage is reduced to 199 (or usually something like 197 or 194 or something -- if someone knows how that works, I'd be interested to know). A damage cap of 999 means you can't do more than 999 damage in one hit.

This is all guesswork based on playing the games. If someone else has better info than me, feel free to correct me.

It was definitely not lower in A1 & A2. In fact, I don't think A1 even had a damage cap, because no matter how much I beef up my skills, the damage inflicted is getting higher and higher. And my skills are beefed up big time, going into the thousands. And it would be nice to have the damage cap removed altogether. Speaking of caps, does anyone know how much gold you'll be able to carry around at one time?

I believe damage is reduced to 199 and then armor is taken into consideration.

Displaying four digits of damage makes the engine ugly.

Yes, and we all know how challenging that game turned out to be in the end... really a good lesson on why damage caps are a good thing, or at least not to make your final bosses laughable.

Four digits make everything ugly not only because it is simply too big, but also because it is an even number. Odd numbers of digits (or anything for that matter) with a "middle" digit are always more attractive to the human psyche. And you don't really need four digits worth of damage- progressing into the thousands is really unnecessary to achieve the effect that your characters are growing in strength, which is all really high scales of attack-power/damage vs. stamina/endurance/life/health really does.

Two digits is an even number. So he should cap damage at 9! Yay!

I'm sure if you wanted more damage you could easily search the executable for the number 199 ("C7" in hex) and change it. Though if the compiler does what I think it does you could only jump it up to 255.

Searching for a combination of only two digits in such a large file would be pretty hopeless; you'd find dozens, if not hundreds, of places where C7 occurs. The chance of ruining the file rather than taking away the damage limit would be relatively large.

999 sounds like a fine damage cap to me. A1 was kinda odd in that only high magic scores or a high bows skill could produce hit over 100, so I found myself constantly doing 90-something damage in melee.

Hooray! Now to plan work on a terrible, armored, acid-spitting boss monster with huge amounts of hp!
