At least the yellow nephil PC's attack graphic and the "evil altar" graphic are not exactly in the right place in the sheet, I think. The altar has a white left edge.

The graphics may have not received much praise, but I actually like Exile and Geneforge graphics, and in any case I think they are an important part of the game. Avernum and Geneforge are two different worlds, that's why seeing the poor roamer-hellhound makes me sad.

Fortunately, many of the graphics come from Avernum and very few are very disturbing cross-breeds.

But anyway, the graphics aren't the whole game. I like the story development so far (which isn't very far), and the new spells are interesting.

I don't really miss the cartoons, but I think there are too many unedited Geneforge graphics (like Roamer as a "hellhound"!). It gives a kind of "recycled" feeling and hurts the atmosphere. I don't want to use shaper, guardian or agent graphics. More character graphics please!

In my opinion, Geneforge graphics are nicer than the old Avernum graphics, but there could have been more new graphics.

The autosave is sometimes useful but more often annoys me, because it slows the game. It would be nice to have an option to switch it off.

What I miss the most are secret doors.

Hmm... Let's see... In the recent months I've played:

Troubles of Middle Earth (an Angband variant)
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Diablo 2
Wizardry 1 :-)

Once in a while I've played Dungeon Siege, but it hasn't got much else interesting than pretty graphics.

EDIT: I also play Baldur's gate 1 and 2 through. I like them, though the story didn't impress me much.

I'm looking for a free program that could save as .png or .gif files that internet browsers can display, as AppleWorks 6 doesn't seem to do that.

Do you know of any such programs for Mac OS9 or OSX 10.2?

I can't properly translate all english (into Finnish), and I've been studying and practicing it for about 15 years. I don't think I ever can.

I don't know about Latin, but I've found Spanish to be relatively easy after learning a bit German and much English, because of similar words especially in English. (Knowing some swedish, however, makes it also harder... There are so many of same words that mean different things in those two languages.)

Yes, it seems LeGuin has given in to her propaganda side in her latest books.

But I usually don't find it as tiring as Goodkind's, who often uses descriptions of sex and violence to back it up, and the uses the word "democracy", for example. LeGuin's characters haven't declared aloud that they are feminists.

Ursula LeGuin, Stephen King('s earlier works mostly), Tolkien...

EDIT: The Strugatskis and Stanislaw Lem are also among my favourites.

Are there any excellent, _new_ fantasy writers? I don't know, I haven't read any outstanding new books from new writers for some time. (I actually haven't read Rowling...)

EDIT2: I (too) have a serious attitude problem with Goodkind. I couldn't take the second book in his series seriously anymore, and quit reading soon after he added the present-day political propaganda element.

I learned (?) to code Java at the university, but I didn't like it. Java tends to be slow compared to, say, C++.

If you want to learn a programming language, at least one friend/relative who knows the important tricks of that particular language is recommendable. It can be a lot faster that way.

I learned the basics of programming using World Builder, the game making program. :)

Kiwis ban virtual drugs in General

When I was a teenager, I once played a freeware (?) game which was a bit like the one that's mentioned in the article.

It resembled Pacman or that sort of game. It worked only on mac.

It's interesting that this newer game doesn't contain graphical violence (according to the article), and it's (kind of) the reason why it was "red-flagged for possible banning": "If teens perceive that drugs are harmless or fun from video games, they will be more likely to try them. It's just like TV shows in which kids drink alcohol."

Other games like Postal 2, for example, get banned because of having too much graphical violence.

Then, have two different shops.

Yeah, but that's kind of cluncky and bad on talking nodes.

Not in my opinion. I've seen it in many scenarios and probably other Exile games.

(Not that it's a very important issue...)

1. it's "purc" like "purchase".

2. The roads are terrains 79-81. They don't look very much like roads but the game will connect the dots when it's played.

At least nobody (that I know of) has got into copyright troubles from a scenario, so far.

The only problems in the past that I know of, have emerged if a scenario has been too similar to some other scenario.

Ever since I spent a couple of weeks in Scotland (about a year ago), it's been Scottish.

I like the Southwest Finland accent, and I live there.

However, I hate Finnish accent in English, French etc., at least when it's thick. (In fact, I hate my own accent when I try to speak English)

There is at least one scenario that's based on another game, Domestic Evil. It's not a bad scenario, in my opinion.

A variant of Angband (called PernAngband!) was loosely based on the world of Dragonriders of Pern, and the author of the books didn't like the idea. The game had to be removed from the net. So, I wouldn't put names from those books into my scenarios...

How much encumbering armor do you use? in Blades of Exile

The last one is closest to what I was thinking... It might be useful information when I make custom items.

But I also want to find out if there's any player here who's emotionally attached to plate mails and if so, why... :)

Anyway, it seems that so far, no one likes to have even 3 encumbrance often. It's a bit like I expected. Interesting.

10 topics at once? I don't have time to say even half of things that these brought to mind...

2. What do you think of the war in Iraq?

I disagree, and fortunately "we" are not there (or at least if we are, it's not in the main media). But i think the war coalition should pull out. I can't come up with any "good" solution but the current foreign occupation being there seems to be the worst option. Who would control and supervise things and guarantee that the troops behave nicely towards the Iraqi population? And make sure that the Iraqis (or most of them) benefit economically? And make sure that they have real political independence? Etc.

7. Do you think the minimum wage should be raised?

Yes... But there should also be more measures to make sure that the law is followed.

8. Who do you think should get tax cuts the most?

My answer was the lowest 25 %, if there has to be a tax cut. However, I would rather raise taxes if they'd be used to build social services. (in almost any country)

I just wonder, does anybody keep plate mails and use them? What about breastplates? Or large shields? Etc.

I'm considering removing at least the plates from my scenario, because I'm making room for new items. I never use plates myself and rarely any armor combination that gives more than 2 encumbrance.

So, how encumbering armor do you use and/or what do you think about this?

Desert Plah's text does not yet answer to the question "what will happen and why", but I can imagine possible ways of carrying out the story.

What came to mind first about the background: OK, the party is coming back home, where there has been a spider problem. Maybe the problem has grown while they were gone and has become a serious threat? That would be interesting.

If the party had friends (or people they know) on the island, it would give more motivation for them to do something about the problem.

An island divided by mountains - I've seen something like that in a few scenarios but I don't see any problem in it. It can be used well or badly.

The main quest with its different goals could be anything. Maybe the party finds a small object, which is an important clue of larger things (like a rare spell component, which they could show to various experts); maybe they hear that their aunt or nephew or tenant is missing after a spider attack; etc.

I can't say much about what it sounds like yet, but I can't say that it sounds boring.

EDIT: It seems I missed Desert Plah's response when I started to write this..
