Idea - Scenario Storyboard Contest in Blades of Exile

The contest - why not.

There could also be a site for those that don't want to participate in the contest. The site could have a box where people could submit their ideas, and an archive of ideas. Of course, someone would have to put up that site.

Criticism is one thing, losing is another, and if there is a competition, there always has to be the loser. Losing is OK if you have a good self-confidence. But if not...

No Finland?! Outrageous! There are at least... um... 4 finns who visit these boards sometimes.

Besides, I live in Turku, which should be separated from the rest of Finland, at least if you ask people from Helsinki and Tampere. Therefore, Turku should also be included in the country list.

Does "by June 1st" mean "by the end of June 1st" or earlier?

Oh yeah, and which time zone?

(Though I probably can't finish my scenario by the end of that day anyway)

I went through the sound list and didn't find chicken! Is it named differently or is it removed?

Undead Horde Substitutes in Blades of Avernum

Everything has been used.

To me, anything's OK in a scenario, undead or even GIFTS, _if_ there's a good enough plot related to it. And not too much fighting. Fighting a horde of monsters is fun occasionally, not continuously.

(Evil_Penguin's ideas are really great. The last bring Clive Barker's Abarat to mind, somehow.)

Why do you like BoE but not BoA? in Blades of Exile
Shock Trooper

The most important reasons why I like BoE better:

* The graphics.

* Combat. It feels more imbalanced in BoA than in BoE. And less diverse.

A smaller reason but a reason nonetheless:

* Navigation. I manage to click a wrong direction in BoA in battle at a critical moment quite often, it must have something to do with the hills. The automap is still sometimes confusing. Having North in the upper right corner is irritating, in my opinion.

(Seems to repeat some of the posts above.)

EDIT: Also, there are more terrains and items in BoA, but you can only have 2 wall sets and there's less diversity in weapons and armor. There are many interesting "junk" items but they are not as interesting as items that have some use.

I don't really care about having 3D graphics, except that having heights that make falling possible is cool. What I like most in BoA both as a player and a designer could be the more flexible talking dialogue system. I don't know, but BoA is not entirely bad, either, in my view.

(I like Exile 1&2 though they have no dialog pictures. I even don't like many of BoE's dialog pics. But the quality of BoA dialog pics seems better to me and I like seeing them used in scenarios...)

I liked Morog and Imps. I wouldn't vote for ZKR but it's indeed not the worst BoA scenario, so too bad those who like it can't vote it.

I tried te_look_block_x but it hides the floor and everything behind the square.

What I was trying to do is a custom doorway. It would have been nice to use that with the wall sets that have no doors. The problem is, the game shows at least party characters on top of the terrain, not behind like it should.

I remembered today that Valley of Dying Things had one custom doorway but though I copied the code, I couldn't make it work.

I guess this is another bug. If I'm guessing right, this means that only two different kinds of doors and windows can be used correctly per town. Grr.

But thanks anyway.

Is there a way to make a custom terrain that blocks player's view to the character in that terrain (like a window or a closed door)?

te_blocks_view doesn't seem to do it.

(The terrain in question isn't otherwise blocked.)

And now that I mentioned it, what does te_blocks_view do?

I noticed that "Mound" and "Hole" graphics are in use already, they are Supply Cache and Found Supply Cache.

My english has become quicker and better but maybe a little less formal and more American. I can't say who has influenced it the most.

My native language is Finnish. I got an "L" (means an "A") in English from my matriculation exam, which is difficult in Finland and was a nice coincidence. Since the exam I must have forgotten some things.

I'm working on a scenario. It will be as small as possible (in this case, 12 towns or so), and it'll probably be never finished.

The name is "Nephil Mountains", but it will change.

Do you think there is a Hell? in General

Throwing in my 2 cents (or 2 small flames...?)

I've heard somewhere about the origin of the word "hell" (Gehenna) that it originally meant a certain valley near a certain town, where they burned their trash.

(In the valley, not in the town, that is. :) )

I'm not sure what I believe in, because there are many gods to choose from. If I choose to follow one, how do I know that it's the right one? I may anger another god. The "true" god may even be Allah, for all I know. (Because the Quran says so.)

And more seriously, there are logical problems in many religions, which this thread demonstrates, in my opinion.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but you can't exit a town if the border is at the town edge or 1 space from the edge. If there's a border that's not too close to the edge in that town, you can exit through that side of the town.

(This is Mac version 1.1.2.)

Emotion comes first both in ontogenesis (development of the individual) - as every parent will tell you - as well as in phylogenesis (development of the species). Reason requires more than communication namely the ability to leave one's subjective point of view and adopt (or at least strive to adopt) some more general point of view which is acceptable to your communication partner.

I was talking more about our way of thinking, about how we form "rational" thoughts every day in different situations. Fear of death is just one example of emotion, love could be another. Emotion and rational thought do not have to exclude each other.

My point was something like this: our culture has the habit of separating things - and ways of thinking - into rationality and emotion.

However, Some things can't be explained with "pure" reason (I mean, rationality); another thing is that the "opposite" side uses its own reasoning from its own viewpoint. For example, those who declare wars always have reasons to give to at least some of their communication partners. Usually they seem to be something like: "We have to protect these people from that dangerous group of people."

Both warmongers and peacemakers have emotions. In fact, what is reason without emotion? For example, why do we have goals?

Of course there is always also the false information and nobody knows everything.

We make choices, which our world views and values affect. We choose what to do and what not to do. Those who declare wars and participate in them, choose, among other things, to kill people (or have people killed).

quote:
there is no basis for reasoning because the realities that both communities have established for themselves are incompatible.
There are the same kind of people in Palestine and Israel as in any country, that is, their views vary a lot on what's going on.

I respect very much what peace activists - Palestinian, Israeli and foreign - are trying to do in the region. Though I have heard that they may sometimes be hated, it's an important work to create alternatives.

It's interesting. Is it even possible to separate reason and emotion? Which one comes first? Fear of death may be part of our "rational" thinking and sometimes lead to irrational things. I think.

Well, I admit I haven't visited Gaza refugee camps. Though actually I (sort of) know people (Finns) who came back from there a few weeks ago. It will be interesting to hear about their experiences when they come to Turku next month.

...Anyway, the idea of a total war (with a country or group) is, in a way, impossible. You can't separate and kill or hunt down all members and no one else but the members of a group.

Neither could I accept the idea that my house would be bombed just because a suspicious guy lived next door.
