I obviously feel that the Dialog Box is by far the most important thing. Everything else is nice, but I could do without it. The role of a beta-tester is far more than just catching bugs (good testers, anyway). You should have picked up most of those yourself. The great benefit of testing is to see what things worked and what didn't in an artistic sense as much as a technical one. What combat is unnecessary and annoying? What storyline points are unclear? What 'surprises' weren't? From my experience, it's a good idea to get a few testers you really respect than a whole heap you don't know. Is there a particular designer you admire? Maybe ask him to give it a run through. Or perhaps someone who's impressed you with their general intelligence and opinions on the boards. You can always ask those who didn't apply - they'll probably be flattered, and if not, the worst they can do is say no. Personally, I would not select anyone who lacks either the inclination or the ability to spell properly. Once you've selected your testers (I would suggest only about three), I think it would be a very good idea to send them a long list of questions along with the scenario. I've done this and had very, very good results. Other times, I just gave them the scenario and sometimes got good feedback, usually poor and unsubstantial feedback, and never as good as when my testers knew what sort of critiques I wanted from them. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! My most common party for BoE: Draco: Slith, all advantages except the useless ones, starts with 20 strength. Daojing: No advantages, a bunch of disadvantages, starts with 7 in Mage and Priest. Malkriss is a good one. There are one or two Shamans in it, though. Band of Wanderers is fun, and I don't believe there's any magic. No goblins, certainly. Election and Areni, if you haven't tried them yet. Zankozzie's Big Mistake, sort of. There's no combat of any description, but the story is about a nutty wizard who turns his tower upside down and stuff. Nightfall, perhaps. Yeah, I know people like that. They can get on my nerves, too. There's this little mind game I play with other Christians: Me: "Can God do anything?" Them: "Yeah, of course." Me: "Can he make a rock so big that he can't move it?" Most laugh, but a few get angry for some reason. :P I tend to think people like that understand what 'the rules' are, but don't really think about why they exist. They lose sight of the fact that we are ALL people and we are ALL loved children of God, regardless of whether we return that love or not. Which is strange, because it's one of the most fundamental parts of Christianity. Personally, as a writer, I make every effort to be able to see and understand every point of view. After all, everyone is right from their own perspective. I also have a very strange selection of Christian friends. Loads of divorcees, a lot of former drug addicts, and a murderer. I feel kinda out of place at church, because I don't have any tattoos. :P -------------------- Rate my scenarios! I just think of something cool, and come up with a reason to have it. Rinse, repeat. Then the story starts getting good and I have to come up with all kinds of crazy innovations and stuff to do it justice. Example: Areni. Step 1: Decided I would make an all-outdoors scenario. Step 2: Realised I needed something to make outdoor combat interesting. Step 3: Came up with the Alchemy system. Step 4: Came up with a reason why an Alchemist was fighting a bunch of monsters - to save his apprentice Areni. Step 5: Came up with a reason why Areni was in such a dangerous place - lots of great alchemical ingredients. Step 6: Came up with a reason why Areni needed saving now and not before - barbarians invaded. Step 7: Came up with a reason why the barbarians were invading, blah, blah, blah, etc, etc, so on and so forth. -------------------- Rate my scenarios!
