I haven't got G2. I have got Nethergate and Geneforge. I will agree that his NPC's are often pretty stale, but Geneforge wasn't bad. It had plenty of 'spice'. I can't really speak for G2, but the original had, if not well-made characters, at least well-made points of view for the characters. I don't see any decline of quality - E1 doesn't have a lot of depth of character either. And I must be the only person who was terribly disappointed with Nethergate. I admire the intent, but the finished product seemed very lacking to me. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! I realize Alec was talking about the genre, and I still disagree that it tends to be insipid, any more than any other genre. As mentioned before, I'm quite a big fan of Jars of Clay (though I don't really care for 4Him). Is it really fair to brand groups like Avalon, the Newsboys, Tree63, Switchfoot, etc. as insipid, merely because they choose to sing about the thing that matters most to them? Or is it just an issue of personal taste, and this discussion equivalent to one person rationalizing why rap sucks, while another argues that it doesn't? -------------------- Rate my scenarios! I see TM is off in his own little world again. People tend to write about the things that have made the biggest impact on their lives. For many, it's love. For some, it's God. Others, despite being defined as "Christian artists", write about all aspects of their lives, including but not limited to their relationship with God. I disagree strongly with Alec's point that writing songs about God indicates any sort of creative deficiencies (sp?). Not arguing for a moment that there aren't bad Christian musicians along with the good ones, but isn't that the case with any genre/subgroup you care to name? I don't think you'd be able to convincingly argue that Rebacca St. James' songs are insipid. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! Christian music and country music is one and the same? What the? Switchfoot are a Christian band. P.O.D. as well. Lifehouse (Hanging by a Moment) and Stacie Orrico also come to mind as Christian artists who have become popular in the mainstream. *please note, I'm not arguing the quality of their music here - Stacie Orrico bores me to death, for example - but they aren't country.* I like U2 a lot, particularly their early stuff. I enjoy Evanescence tremendously, also Jars of Clay, Paul Colman Trio, Alabaster Box, and (this might surprise some people) Avril Lavigne. Linkin Park has some songs I love, but I haven't yet bought an album. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! *sigh* This topic was started in reference to a wish list sent to Jeff in regards to upcoming features for Blades of Avernum. As you would be able to see if you bothered looking at the dates, this was about two years ago and there is no need to dredge this thing up. *wishes he could lock topics here* -------------------- Rate my scenarios! Mark Jibollik - The words of the song are as follows: You don't get it man, I'm not talking multiple choice. You don't understand, If the Cross offends you, find another voice. I am not running for office here, I won't keep it purposefully vague. I've heard that New Age life-force trip, I'd rather be dipped in bubonic plague. Good taste, though. :) -------------------- Rate my scenarios! Areni Revenge To Live in Fear Deadly Goblins Ugantan Nightmare Isle of Boredom Posts: 1423 | Registered: Sunday, October 7 2001 07:00 |

No and yes, in that order. Since BoA's release, more BoE scenarios have been made than BoA ones. We're plenty alive. So go for it. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! quote:That has a certain amount of truth to it, but not much. Many of us are better designers than Jeff is. Not that we're looking for fame and riches, but it does hurt that he disregards our suggestions pretty much out of hand. It also hurts that he basically says "BoE? That old thing? Who cares about that now? If you want a bug-free system, play BoA (which isn't either)!" There are still masterpieces being made with BoE. Surprisingly, BoA hasn't put much of a dent in the number of new scenarios being made. I think more BoE scenarios have been made since BoA came out than BoA ones. So the pretty much complete lack of support it's getting stings. Keep in mind, most of us aren't necessarily interested in game design as a career. We do this as a hobby. But even so, when a bug stops us from pulling off a way cool scene, it still hurts to be told "Players haven't asked for the editor bugs to be fixed, so I won't fix them." Especially when players have asked. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! I gotta wonder what the point is in holding up traffic. All you're doing is keeping those cars running longer (chewing up fossil fuels, spewing Carbon Monoxide, etc.), and making the people who are sitting in their cars for two hours become antagonistic to your cause. Leaving the pros and cons of the cause itself aside, it does seem to be a very counterproductive action. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! Those one-legged sprinters are amazing to watch. I sort of know a Paralympian (my father played footy against him, I met him once, he wouldn't remember me). He was a promising all-around athlete, but lost his leg in a motorcycle accident. He competed at the Barcelona and Atlanta Paralympics in the Triathlon. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! I drink a bit, but not much. The traditional beer after a footy game or something, but only really because it's expected. I've never been drunk and don't ever intend to be - I know a few too many people who wrecked their lives with alcoholism. Besides, beer doesn't even taste that good. It's okay, and I'll drink it if someone else is paying, but it's just not worth it. I'd rather have a soft drink for about half the price. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! I did it in Deadly Goblins, purely so I could control the goblins' tactics. I wouldn't mind it, so long as the encounters are actually interesting. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! Haven't played GF2 beyond the demo, but I liked GF1 for the most part. It's fun to look at an issue from a lot of different angles. If there's a message to GF, it's "There's two (or more) sides to every story". I think it presents this argument very well, by letting us see for ourselves that virtually every character is sympathetic and has good reasons for doing what he does, no matter what side he's on. It is a bit too shallow - many of the characters don't feel like real people - but overall it's very good. So, yeah, I'm very much with Kel on this one. I'd pay a lot more attention to the message of TM's stuff if the story and characters made sense. If they don't, why should I expect the underlying message to? An author needs to show that he understands what makes people tick before I'll believe he has anything worthwhile to say about the human condition (whatever that is). TM, I'm sure you'll probably spontaneously combust from reading this, but if you hold together long enough to type out a reply, keep in mind that you'll never convince me of anything if I can't understand what you're saying. Use small words. :) -------------------- Rate my scenarios! Areni Revenge To Live in Fear Deadly Goblins Ugantan Nightmare Isle of Boredom Posts: 1423 | Registered: Sunday, October 7 2001 07:00 |

Pretty much all TM's stuff is very philosophical. I'm sure he'll have plenty to say as soon as he sees this topic. Me, I don't mind a bit of philosophy as long as it's on the part of the characters rather than the scenario. Anything too heavy-handed or too aware of it's own supposed meaningfulness puts me right off. I thought A Perfect Forest handled it pretty well. -------------------- Rate my scenarios! BoE is not dying at all. However, it's becoming less and less Spidweb-centralized. There's a couple of top-quality, recent scenarios that aren't even on their Untried table. If the first scenario stands alone and you can leave the rest of the series undone without hurting it, go for it. Incidentally, you're not the only one who's found 'How did this happen?' to be a powerful creation tool. :) -------------------- Rate my scenarios! This is perplexing. Areni was put up as a .zip file first (and I think can still be downloaded in that format from the forum header), but has indeed now been replaced with a .sit. That's amazing. Why would anyone go to so much trouble to make things worse? Do ya wanna be a part of the solution?
