The Don't Fix The Shark Competition! in Blades of Avernum

Hang tight, the bizarre title will be explained in due time. Jeff, I'd appreciate it if you read through this.

As BoA has just arrived for Mac and is on the way for us Windows users, some of us over at the Lyceum have been kicking around an idea for a novelty competition for BoE. Since BoA is supposed to give us much more power and free us up as scenario designers, we thought a good way to celebrate it's release would be to go to other extreme.

We all know the movie Jaws. The story goes that when Spielberg went to shoot the film, he couldn't get the mechanical shark to work very well. To avoid putting a horribly fake shark on screen, he had to shoot the film keeping the main threat off-camera almost completely. Interestingly, this gave the movie a lot more menace and he ended up with a much better film than if he had been able to make it the way he wanted.

Self-imposed restrictions on design could make for a very interesting contest. For example, a designer might try to make a scenario that takes place entirely outdoors. Or one that features only four characters. Or even one that *gasp* uses no nodes.

The entries will be judged not only on the quality of the individual works, but on how extreme the restrictions the designer placed on himself were and on how well the scenario performed in spite of them. In other words, a great scenario that is restricted to five towns may well lose to a fairly good scenario that includes no text. Designers are free to choose their own restrictions.

I posted this here, as it occurred to me that Spiderweb might like to put up a copy of BoA as a prize. This would work well for everyone, I'm inclined to think. The winner would be talented designer, so putting a copy of BoA in his/her hands could only improve your business.

Fairly interesting, but it takes a long time to make a simple point. Of course the best place to go for design articles is the Designer's Forum - TM's currently working at restoring it.

Desert Plah - the Falling Stars ending is quite predictable. It an Alcritas scenario, after all. Can't have a happy ending. :P

Unreleased scenarios count for nothing.

E.E.P. - Consider me amazed that you have that many scenarios hidden away. I'll give them a try.

Drake - I disagree. If you're going to start a series, you better not have trouble finishing scenarios.

ADoS, I was talking to both, fool.

E.E.P. - Have you actually released any scenarios? I have played most, and don't recall any by yourself. Though the whole moniker thing could account for that.

Having farmed ostriches for a while, I can say that I have never seen them stick their heads in the ground (though I have seen them do a remarkable number of really dumb things, including eating their own excretions out of curiosity). But then, the ground was very hard.

It's possible. She's still actively making graphics, and won a few of the categories in this year's graphics competition. I think she goes by Falcatta over at the Lyceum, if you want to get in contact with her.

And yeah, she rules.

TM, when did Aceron EVER annoy the player? It's not like he ever made a scenario.

EDIT: Silly me. You include Hitler and Dubya and I ask why Aceron's on it.

TM was joking. Silly Drizzt. :P

His idea sounds very much like the beginning of Boredom. The biggest difference being that I only really had one PC doing anything at one time. It could be cool - but then, I thought that everybody would love the Boredom intro.

Correct. It's been done in a large number of scenarios. Echoes: Assault, The Election, Zankozzie's Big Mistake, Emulations, Chains, Heirs to Theseus, and many others.

I'm not the only one with BoE Posse. *i had it too before he became the Establishment. Alcritas and Brett Bixler (Void Master) have it as well, though they hardly ever post.

Edit: Just remembered that I hardly ever post.

Thuryl: That's EXACTLY how I did it. None of my coding is very elegant, it just works. Sometimes. If I come up with an elegant solution, I've usually already implemented the clunky one.

As a result of this technique, if you wander around in the swamps in Revenge for a long time, you'll die from 'resting'. I decided I could get away with this, since only a complete idiot would wander around in Uganta's swamps longer than he had to.

Heh. Rest-checking ala Revenge is possible, but far from easy. There'd only be about five designers who could do it.

Place invisible monsters over blocked terrain, and have an "Explosion on space" node, with a large enough radius to get all of them.

It would also do damage to the party, but that just adds to the realism.

I think I'll go test that…

Ideas for how to work around design options in Blades of Avernum

I also dislike forcing players to play earlier scenarios. I went out of my way to make sure the player didn't have to play Isle of Boredom to play Revenge, mainly because Isle of Boredom isn't exactly my best work and I can't blame anyone who doesn't enjoy it.

Special Spells: As far as I can tell, there won't be usuable special items in BoA. So, I think actual items (say, spellbooks) would be a good way to simulate spells, since they will be able to call scripts in BoA.
