Regardless, for the sake of Socrates and Augustus (and probably Marx, too, but I'm not sure if he spoke English in addition to German), we'd need a Babel fish.

Marx did indeed speak English, although he never got too good at it.

The American accent counts, and is quite strong and distinctive. Trust me.
I know this. I was mainly speaking for the benefit of my fellow Americans, who recognize a whole slew of regional "American" accents. If I can be an ugly American for a moment, I can't understand how anyone could call Bostonian the same as, say, Minnesotan.

Marlenny: Brooklyn sounds pretty similar to the rest of New York, now that I think about it. I guess accents here have more to do with ethnicity than what borrough you live in.

I quite literally do not have an accent, unless "American" counts. Even then, it's pretty weak. I can do a pretty good Brooklyn accent when I try, not that anyone wants to hear that.

There should be enough gaps in the trees to get you where you need to go. Try looking more carefully. Your goal is a town on the coast of the big lake.

EDIT: Also, 500 posts! Wheee!

Personally, I like flaming steel waveblades, but those are expensive. Mithral broadswords also seem to be popular, although I've never used them much.

But really, why can't we put these things to a vote? If the majority of the American people don't care if the Ten Commandments is displayed in our federal buildings, well, then, majority rules. Part of democracy.
The ancient Athenian democracy worked this way. The result was that unpopular people tended to be exiled or killed.

I'm not sure how much any of us differ on the original questions. In each case, the CoC seems fairly clear on the course of action demanded. If I have anything to add to this, it's to say that I tend to err on the side of leniency. For the first example, I would tell the offender his mistake, warn him of the possible consequences (i.e., banning), and lock the topic.

For example number 2, I don't think I'd have to do any more than politely remind TM to keep it civil. However, I would keep an eye on the topic, in case it started to descend into flaming.

Example three is the easiest. I'd lock it immediately, assuming the thread didn't have any worthwhile content in it, with the explanation that pointless posting games are no good.

EDIT: Didn't see TM's post until after mine was up. Keep the mudslinging in the other threads, please.

This kind of negative campaigning is proof that some of the candidates care more about status than fostering a strong community. I don't have many qualifications, apart from being an oldbie, but if you want a mod you can trust to be impartial, I'm a good choice.

I check General as frequently as anyone, but I post less than most of the other candidates. I don't get involved in most of the debates, which means that if I'm elected I can deal with any conflict fairly.

What's more, my low post count is pretty good proof that I don't give a damn about status. Instead of posting first and thinking second, I always take time to consider what I'm about to do, and then do it. I think that's the way a moderator should act, instead of attacking people I disagree with.

I understand your concerns, Sushi, but never fear. The Scorched Earth party is pro-world exploding voodoo.

As for Dolphin, I had hoped to keep this campaign clean of fluids other than blood, but she has left me no choice. So ladies, vote for me, and I promise to make it worth your while. ;)

A typical big government solution from EVOL. What we really need is to cut the pointless red-tape that keeps the victims of offensive language from defending themselves. Here at Scorched Earth headqquarters, we say this: you'll get my dirty words when you pry them from my cold, dead hands!

Speaking of hands, we also promise to cut TM's hands off and make him type with his nose.

I see Zeviz has begun to start campaigning. He makes a lot of promises, but some of us have questions. Questions he doesn't answer. Questions he hopes you won't ask!!

For example: if Zeviz is really a man of action and not all talk, why is he running in an election instead of staging a bloody coup??

Why is EVOL spelled backwards LOVE, the very emotion that renders you pathetic humans so vulnerable?

How can we really be free when Zeviz would take away the freedoms we cherish most, like the freedom to be corrupt, power-hungry manaiacs? Or the freedom to beat people to death with lead pipes?

Beneath Zeviz's flowery speeches lurks a hidden agenda. Only one political party has the stones to stand up to EVOL, and that party is Scorched Earth!

Zeviz and the EVOL party machinery promise more than they can deliver! But I, Sarachim, promise you a blasted, nightmarish hellscape, devoid of all save the cries of the wounded and the stink of dead spammers. You can't promise less than that!

Zeviz promises that flamers will be dealt with using a minimum of violence. I, on the other hand, recognizes for this (and all other) problems, half measures will do nothing. The Scorched Earth Party gives you its word: under our modship, even the smallest disturbance will be met with a maximum of violence!

And finally, Zeviz promises to end the corruption of power. I, on the other hand, promise to have fun.

The choice is clear. Vote Scorched Earth for General in 2005.

Golddale campaign, day 3. Morning.

Homurr and Wave Black-Eyes watched the ongoing siege from a hilltop. Wave had a pair of field glasses, which she would occasionally lend to Homurr. Together, they studied their enemy, and especially the cannons. Neither spoke much for over an hour.

Through the glass, Wave watched an errant shot crash through the side of a house and reduce most of a wall to rubble. A moment later, its residents came running out, terrified.

"This I do not understand," said Wave, breaking the silence. "You said that these humans came to make war on you."

"So I thought," answered Homurr, "but the more I study Meriwether's movements, the more I feel like I understand his master. Shao does not hate us, and does not care whether we live or die. He only cares about power, and will use any means to get it." He took the field glasses, and idly studied one of the humans' batteries. "He will get away with much on the excuse of defending the Empire from us, and if we are defeated his rebellion will absorb all the human lands from here to Gale."

Homurr handed the binoculars back to Wave, and the two were silent for another minute.

"All the same, this siege is going to be hard for him to explain. And so will his alliance with the giants. I think I have a job for you, Wave."

"Finally! All this waiting for Shao to advance was getting unbearable."

"Choose some humans from your band that you trust and send them west, or lead them yourself. Disguise them as refugees from Golddale. I will buy them safe passage west from the Thieves' Guild, as far as Blackcrag. From there, the road to Imperia is straight. The extent of Shao's treason must be known in every place along that road."

"And then?"

"And then they will return to us, and join the battle. With luck, they will come with Imperials at their heels."
