quote:As Alec pointed out, what it actually said was that almost half the abortions performed are for women who weren't using contraceptions. It's not "almost half the women", because many of them are the same women who'd already had abortions previously. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! quote:Well, that's where one gets into the back-and-forth about how someone who hasn't been born hasn't really had any worthwhile or unique experiences yet so it's generally no great loss to anyone if they die, apart from having been something of a waste of several months of the parents' time. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! quote:Well, if you had two cars that you didn't need and I had none and needed one, one could make an argument for taking away your car and giving it to me, but that's a different issue entirely. quote:We've had that discussion already. :P Depends what you mean by "believe", really. Ethics is mostly an intellectual exercise for me. I don't feel strongly about any particular issue unless it affects me directly. And since I've been born for quite some time now and am not likely to be unborn in the foreseeable future, banning abortion doesn't really do much to benefit me. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Basically her situation is that there's enough brainstem activity that she keeps breathing on her own if life support is disconnected, but that's about it. The whole cerebral cortex seems to be pretty much dead, which many but not all doctors accept as essentially equivalent to brain death. Yep. As far as anyone knows, in Exile 3, Demonslayer and the Adamantite Axe are only available via the editor. (Demonslayer's available in Avernum 3, of course, although you find it so late that it's not much use.) -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! To be perfectly honest, I don't see a huge difference between having a child and then killing it compared to never conceiving it at all. In both cases, the result is the same: no baby. I'm not sure how it's possible to argue that the former is wrong without arguing that the latter is wrong too. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Okay, here's a start. There are a whole *bunch* of different forms of energy. Kinetic energy (movement). Thermal energy (heat). Chemical, gravitational, mechanical and electrical potential energy. Nuclear energy. There are probably a few more I haven't thought of. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

quote:I'm pretty sure the fact that they haven't been observed and probably can't be is part of the reason why they're called virtual particles. It's just that they make awfully convenient physical models -- a particle under the influence of electromagnetic forces really does behave as if it were interacting with photons, even though those photons are virtual and unobserved. Adding new spells and skills seem like other obvious examples. Maybe we should start a topic on the BoA Editor forum. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Nope. There is absolutely no way to have a weapon call any sort of script on hitting a target. (A list of things BoA can't do ought to be put into the Designers' FAQ, methinks.) You COULD have a monster that had an *attack* that destroyed certain types of equipped item, though. There are certain limitations to this, but you could still do a fair bit with it. Riposte in Blades of Avernum | |

Some players have reported very low success rates from Riposte, far below the approximately 3%/level success rates listed in the message window when a character ripostes. I've done a little experimentation, and it's become clear that Riposte only has a chance to activate when a character is hit by a monster which has a weapon equipped. This is presumably intentional behaviour; unfortunately, it does rather limit the usefulness of Riposte. (I wonder, does Parry work the same way? Logically you'd think it would, but I suspect it doesn't. Unfortunately my tests are complicated by the fact that my non-fighters, who don't have Parry, have Brittle Bones and less armour than my fighters, so I can't give a conclusive result at this stage.) So, scenario designers, think of your poor Riposte-using players. Make sure at least a few monsters in your scenario use weapons. :P -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! quote:Not true. Obviously, the Vahnatai have their own language. So do the Nephilim -- there are papers written in the Nephil language in the nephil castle in E1/A1. And I'm pretty sure there were some obelisks in Slith lands with indecipherable words on them, suggesting a distinct Slith language as well. Of course, many of the Nephilim, Slithzerikai and Vahnatai you meet do speak the human language, but their generally imperfect grasp of it suggests that they mostly speak it as a second language. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! And of course, DG's comment that it's Jeff giving the prizes so he should be the one to judge WOULD be reasonable were it not for the fact that Jeff has in the past agreed to award prizes for community-judged contests -- in other words, Jeff thinks the community is competent enough at judging quality scenarios that he's willing to financially support their contests, even if DG doesn't. DG, of course, is blissfully unaware of this due to his generalised ignorance of the community's history. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure!
