quote:I'm unfortunately beginning to develop the impression that Banks is, in several important respects, writing the same book over again. Probably this is because of the nature of the Culture; stories about it can only be told from a position slightly outside it, because a whole book written about a utopia tends to make a pretty boring read. Still, it's slightly frustrating for every second protagonist he writes to be an antisocial reluctant hero with an ambivalent attitude toward the Culture. quote:I vaguely recall two literary academics once compiling a list of "50 books that never needed to be written", including Beowulf, Lord of the Rings and Tom Jones. The writers reviewed all the books in the list and argued that each of them was bland, cliched and contributed nothing new to the literary canon. The whole list was, of course, a joke, designed to illustrate the fact that the literary works on it had all permeated so deeply throughout our culture that the works themselves no longer seemed to have any significantly original content from the viewpoint of an average modern person. I don't think so. This is one of those "Don't do that" situations -- you were given fair warning, after all. Next time don't kill people in the Faerie Bazaar. That's the Bunker. You can get in much, much later in the game, after you've found evidence of who's responsible for the plagues. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

There are mind crystals (they look like big crystals on pedestals) which teach you the ancient Slith language, helping you communicate with various characters and decipher various messages, including the ones on the panels. There was one in the Catacombs, but you've already missed that and can't go back to it. There's another one you can get to, though, in the building in southwestern Northern Bahssikava (in the tunnels with all the chitrachs). If you're completely stuck, you don't have to free the slith spirits; it's just rather helpful to do so. His reputation is at 99, and he thinks that's the maximum possible (it isn't). And now this gets locked. All future correspondence goes in the other topic. Um, in which game? Assuming it's one of the Geneforge games, all you have to do in order to enter a cheat code is type Shift-D, then type the name of the cheat in the dialog box that appears. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Yes, that'd be the wand you want. There are actually two mutually exclusive quests involving an object at the bottom of the cliff, both with very nice rewards. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

The theory is that if you spend all your time worrying about quality you'll be too indecisive to put pen to paper at all, and a bad novel is better than no novel. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Using canisters has some effect, but not much. During the game, if you've used a lot of canisters, you get into one or two fights that you could otherwise avoid. As for the ending, people will fear and avoid you if you've used a lot of canisters, and it's possible to be imprisoned or executed for using them at the end if you've failed to achieve enough to be forgiven for that. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Well, depends what you mean by "exactly the same". The basic premise is pretty much the same as Geneforge 2: "someone's building a Geneforge and there's one group that wants to use it and one group that wants to destroy it". Having said that, though, any two plots are going to sound similar once you summarise them enough. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! In Geneforge 1, there isn't really any reason not to absorb and recreate your creations every time your shaping skills improve. Furthermore, building up the statistics of low-tier creations isn't really worth it; it's usually best to make as many creations as possible of the strongest types available to you, and give them no modifications except +2 Intelligence. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! In Geneforge 1, using canisters doesn't affect the ending and doesn't have much effect on anything else either. Considering that it's practically impossible to win (except maybe as a Guardian) without using a bunch of canisters, this is a good thing. However, there is one form of self-improvement you'll find much later in the game that has a drastic effect on the ending. And in Geneforge 2 and 3, your canister usage has more severe consequences, although they're still relatively minor in the scheme of things. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! It's probably a nameserver issue on your end. Not everyone can access that particular site, depending on whether their ISP is feeling cooperative on that particular day. If someone who can access it would copy-paste the item list into a post and post it here, that'd be just peachy keen.
