And then he stopped all movement. He could hear voices outside of the thicket. Checking the ward, he realized that it was rapidly deteriorating. They were probably demons, plotting how to kill him. He hefted his mace and winced. His arm still hurt him, but he needed it now. Uttering a small prayer to Hiram, he yelped in pain and slumped to the ground. His arm felt wonderful, but he was so drained of energy he could hardly move. But now was no time to relax - the demons would be on him soon; he was sure of it. Slowly creeping out of the thicket, grasping his mace tightly in both hands, he hoped to maintain the element of surprise. There were only two of them - arguing over a dead body that they seemed to be dragging in the direction of the thicket. Incensed, he let out an ear-splitting yell and charged the two demons. Waving his mace about, he cracked the one dragging the body on the shoulder, sending him tumbling to the floor. But the other one was nowhere to be seen. "Shifty demons!" he cursed to himself, and slowly turned around. As he did, he was bludgeoned in the stomach with a large staff that Eferas had swung at him.
