The Darkside Loyalists seemed like a good story to go with, but they were kind of reduced to a minor mystery role when they could have been so much more.

I've also always envisioned Commander Johnson going crazy upon reaching the surface and getting an army of Exiles to attack the Empire and you trying to stop him.

The character creation is too complex? Combat isn't fun?

Character creation is the most interesting of all of Jeff's game (as is the spell system), and oversimplification killed it in later games. The combat is great and the most fun combat I've had in any RPG. Somehow the Exile games don't feel like a hackfest even after fighting parties of wandering giants and troglos for the 300th time, while fighting goblins outdoors in Avernum for the 5th time made me want to kill myself.

It would be most likely to see them on Vantanas, which would be a sort of "virgin" surface world before the Empire started fouling things up.

It's fun. In a long game like Exile III (as opposed to BoE scenarios) my characters can take on some personality. They can afford to train in skills nobody likes. Having 6 PCs give some luxury.

My absolute favorite party, though, is a two-PC slith party with a fighter-priest and mage-priest.

I agree mostly with Bain. The atmosphere of BoA and Avernum in general is somewhat counterproductive. BoE just feels better and the stories feel more enriching and engrossing in that medium. Call me irrational or whatever, but that's how I feel. 7.2
