This is the basic story, but there are some inaccuracies: The Empire as we know it originated on Aizo. The humans developed a civilization, cities, and more. There they fought against the giants, nephilim, and troglodytes and wiped them out. They developed boats and sailed in search of other continents. They discovered Pralgad and Vantanas. Vantanas was just a jungle to them, but Pralgad was much more hospitable. The Empire made war with the tribes on Pralgad and took them over. Pralgad offered a better environment for crops and was much less mountainous, so they settled there and moved the capital to Pralgad. Eventually they returned to Vantanas and began to clear some of the forest. They discovered its rich mineral deposits and spices and rich trading companies sprang up. Around this time, the Anama faith was embroiled in a bitter conflict with the Empire, and they were slaughtered. The remaining Anama fled, eventually ending up on the Isle of Bigail. South of Pralgad was Valorim, a land ruled by the vicious Ratbane clan of Nephilim. The Empire constructed Blackcrag Fortress at the southern end of the isthmus connected Pralgad and Valorim and began to mount attacks. After about 50-75 years, the Nephilim were overwhelmed and the cities of Gale and Lorelei were established. At this point, Hawthorne I was the Emperor. His court mages discovered the system of caves beneath the surface, and he sent an expedition. The expedition was led by Thralni, and some of the other members were Scrioth, Karzoth, and Korthax. This expedition was slaughtered, "to a man and a woman." After Hawthorne I's death his son, Hawthorne II, came to power. He began to send down violent and dangerous criminals of the foulest sort, instead of executing them. At this point, there was a power struggle among the mages, and Garzahd and his cronies won and appointed him the advisor to Hawthorne II. Hawthorne II sent these mages down to Exile, including Erika, Rone, Solberg, Aimee, and Patrick. When Hawthorne II died and Hawthorne III came to power, Garzahd remained his advisor. Hawthorne III saw the portal to Exile as the answers to all of society's troubles. All the misfits, antisocials, petty lawbreakers, and more were sent down to Exile. And this proved to be his undoing. Exile's History: After the first few people were sent down, they established a city and began to fight the demons and sliths that threatened them. When the mages were sent down, they were able to help stage an assault on Grah-Hoth, and they captured him in a bottle and stored him in Akhronath, with the lich-ified Prince Hrothar, who had fallen in the battle, to watch over him. When Micah was sent down, he worked closely with the archmages to establish a society. They created glowing mushrooms, built more cities, learned to fight, and they took over the caves. -------------------- "At times discretion should be thrown aside, and with the foolish we should play the fool." - Menander ==== Drakefyre's Demesne - Vahnatai Did Do It desperance.net - We're Everywhere The Arena - God Will Sort The Dead ==== You can take my Mac when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse! The soldiers in Ironclad territory did not know of the happenings on the battlefield far to the south of them. All they knew was that they were to facilitate the easy movement of Solaran troops down to the south. When 125,000 Solaran troops disembarked off of their transport ships and landed just south of White Peak island, the soldiers guarding the area made nothing of it. All they thought was that they were finally going to defeat the Alliance, and it was about time. But the soldiers didn't make it all the way down. Leaving troops behind, always more than the Ironclad troops, the remaining 65,000 troops moved into Blackstone and camped there for the night. When morning came, they did not leave. Many excuses were made, and then 35,000 troops left to secure the surrounding area and the rest of the Ironclad territory. It wasn't until the evening that they found out what had happened at the battle. _______________________ The troops moving south faced Populist and Alliance resistance, but they overpowered them and set forth for the mountain passes. But on the way, General Frederic deviated from the plan just a little bit. Imperius was attacked at dusk. By dawn, it was alight with flames, but firmly in Solaran control. Most of the city was receptive to the new regime, but bloody urban fighting ensued for several days, until all of the Populist and Alliance cells were rooted out. Later, 90,000 troops set out to secure the surrounding area and the west coast. Populist resistance was confused and eradicated. The Saxton School of Magic fell into Solaran hands once again, and the guerrilla resistance, while devastating, was subdued eventually. Solaran battalions swept south and east, destroying pockets of determined, but undisciplined resistance. Until, at least, they reached the mountain passes. Lt. Gregan and his men made their way over to the southern passes. The Alliance troops were expecting an assault from the ground, but the attacks from above disoriented them for long enough to allow the ground troops to sweep in and take the passes. And 125,000 disciplined Solaran troops awaited the return of the armies from the east. _______________________ Captain - no, Major now - Daleris was dispatched to find out the happenings in the battle. He came back, haggard and wheezing. He indicated that there were troops behind him. Colonel Witkin looked and saw the columns of Karadas and Hugo and interrogated Major Daleris. He sputtered and told him that Hugo, Karadas, Linda, and Gideon Ironclad were all dead. Bracing for battle, they set up the archers and pikemen, but they were surprised to see the troops crossing the rivers to the south and making for SAFT headquarters. They were also surprised to see it gone soon after. Redirecting their troops, the Solarans met the Populist army just north of their landing and proposed a truce as long as they would recognize Jehan Sol as the rightful ruler of the Empire. Some troops threw down their weapons and walked to the sides, but most of the army was too set in their ways to go down without a fight. And they threw themselves into the battle that they knew they couldn't win. The Solarans were ordered to give quarter and take prisoners whenever possible, but the Populists quickly scotched that strategy. After days of bloody fighting, the Populist core was surrounded, both by dead Solarans and Populists, but also by a large contingent of the Solaran army. They finally gave up, resigned to their deaths. All of western Pralgrad, unified under Jehan Sol - who would have imagined it in the years previous? _______________________ In the east, Commandant Krilon met with Corim Warderson to arrange the terms of their alliance. Two years later, Grand Imperial Duke Warderson departed for Aizo with his army and anyone else who wanted a new life, which enticed many of the Populists. Of course, there were those who remained on Pralgrad, like Major Tarem, now Colonel Tarem and a leader in the Imperial Army. The last visible Populist and Alliance cells in the east were mopped up by Warderson and Solaran troops, and all that remained were the Ironclads. Jehan Sol approached Blackstone three months later, dressed in court finery and accompanied by a train of courtesans, rather than soldiers. He made his way to the Ironclad Palace and made a grand entrance. The Lady Cathera Ironclad received him, and they lunched and got to know each other. Several months later, following a long and extended courtship, Jehan Sol returned, with a ring and a proposal. He was smitten, and she was charmed. They arranged the wedding for the day after the official coronation. _______________________ A day before the coronation, Sol IV (or Ironclad II, as he would come to be known) met with Taron and other leaders of the Populists. He made it known that he would make minor concessions in the name of unity for the good of the Empire. Later that day, he met with the few remaining officials of SAFT. And he announced to them, in no uncertain terms, that while SAFT would be allowed to rebuild, the Empire would be controlling inter-continental trade and all sea trade, although it would be possible that they would hire out the services of sailors in a contractual agreement in the future. When the day of the coronation came, Jehan Sol became Ironclad II and Sol the Benevolent all in one. In attendance were Taron, Solaran officials, Corim Warderson, and all of the people of Imperius. The wedding was much of the same - in fact, it took place in the same venue and with the same people in attendance. _______________________ In the years to come, Pralgrad and Aizo came to appreciate their emperor, and the resistance and attacks gradually tapered off. A Pralgrad unified under a single emperor began developing in the model of Easton. A son and three daughters continued the line, and succession brought about no bloody battles and no lengthy civil wars, the like of which have not been seen since Jehan Sol was crowned Emperor. Ironclad III, a man of Ironclad and Solaran heritage and with the forceful backing of the entire Empire, began the long reign of the Ironclads. _______________________ (OOC) There's still room for people to resolve their own characters' fates. This was fun. David, that's really a no-no. The message reached the hands of Jehan Sol an hour after noon. He read it thoroughly, crumpled it up, and tossed it into a nearby wastebasket. "Marshal the troops," he called out to Colonel Witkin. "We're going to end this war right now." ____________________ Captain Bethel received word of his liege's response several hours later. He ran to inform General Warderson of the new developments. Warderson listened to the news quietly and began to draw up a new plan of attack to incorporate the Solaran body coming through in the next week. After leaving Warderson, Bethel rushed out to meet the Ironclad liaison. Together they relayed the information to Ironcladians along the eastern coast of the Gulf of Jazen, down to where Warderson was currently stationed. Hopefully, the Ironclads would recognize the Solarans as friends and let them pass through unhindered. ____________________ General Frederic and his newly assembled troops began to march south, 175,000 strong and ready to end the war for Jehan Sol. Along with these troops were 25,000 guards and infantrymen that were not going to make it to the battles. They were there to secure the path for the army and hold any towns or fortresses that were encountered along the way. Two hundred thousand men left Hidar at noon of the second day, marching south through lands that were formerly Populist and Kylenian, now firmly Solaran. Little did they know that most of them would not even cross through the mountains, and those that did would not go for weeks. ____________________ In Easton, the Solaran Imperial Navy began preparing for the largest troop transport and amphibious assault that Ermarian had ever seen. Over 100,000 new workers poured into Easton to begin and oversee the production of battlements, battleships, and only the fourth real city of Pralgrad (behind Imperius, Solaria, and Blackstone, of course). I was under the impression that petanque was exclusively for the French and really old people. And what's the drinking age in Finland? Pralgrad does not encompass the same scale as the Roman Empire - as a maximum, Pralgrad could have 12,000,000 people. The Roman Empire at its height was developing for nearly 1000 years. This Pralgradian society has only been in existence for a couple hundred years. PS Alec - anything more than 50,000 = grave no no. I'd estimate Aizo's population at around 2,000,000, with only around 600,000 as fighting-capable. Divide that among five/six factions and rethink your numbers. I think you're mistaken several times in that second paragraph, BtI. There's gender confusion, first of all. Secondly, I know Zharrad from the Blades of Avernum board and not the RPs, and aside from this post, Zharrad has not shown to be a TGM. FZ, the portal went from the Fort where Kevin was to Solaria. The portal was anchored in Solaria and opened in the fort. As Taron was nowhere near Solaria, there's no way he could have taken anything of real value. And that's a supreme tragedy with the sailors, but to say that half of the fleet was destroyed is a bit much, especially since about 20% of it was already in the south and east, while many more ships were still being outfitted in Easton. 40% gone would be more reasonable, I'd think. Some objections: The portal was closed at the Solaria end. Having a receiver will not get you anywhere. Also, 95% of Solarans genuinely do like Sol. You can't take an infinite supply of people from my territories - most of the Populist sympathizers have already run off to join them. Also, the Solarans are not hurt by maintaining more garrisons at this time, as they have just received a huge influx of troops from Frederic. For as many people are become new Populist sympathizers because of the stories and battles, twice as many have turned their hearts irrevocably against the Populists - half for Jehan Sol's inspirational victories, and half for resentment that the Populists have been causing war, which they don't like. Sol's response is because of the Populists' provocation, which is how almost everyone sees it. And as for SAFT - new Solaran ships are suspiciously absent of SAFT members. Only the older ships, created at the time of the agreement, carry SAFT representatives. The rest are sequestered and deemed 'military property' and not touched by SAFT. Mages in Solaria were dispatched to close the portal and examine and attempt to control the doomguard. They brought it down to a small courtyard next to an annex of the Solarian Palace. Sealing the doors with magical barriers, they began an incantation and removed the first instruction scroll. A second incantation ensued, and their own instruction scroll was entered. Testing it, one of the mages ordered it to move to the corner of the room. Then all hell broke loose. The phoenix egg was crushed, and quickfire enveloped the room. The doomguard melted under the intense heat, and the mages ran to the exits. It was then that they realized the folly in sealing the doors. Or the brilliance. They had sacrificed their own lives to save all of Solaria. When morning came, and an orderly came down to offer the mages some tea, he found the courtyard still sealed by magical barriers, and he heard no movement or talking on the inside. He ran to get another mage to dispel the barriers, and the sight that greeted them was horrific. Six charred corpses up against the entrances, bones twisted and melted, screamed silently for escape. In the center of the courtyard, amongst the burnt trees and ashes, stood a lump of metal and crystal - the last remains of the doomguard. When Jehan Sol found out about the tragedy, he was upset, but he recognized that now nobody on Pralgrad would be able to use the doomguard for battle and butchering. heaving a sigh of relief, he began to set out on a plan of action. Now that the doomguard was safely gone, he could bring the full force of his army against Hugo's forces and the Populists without much fear of them unleashing a horrible weapon of destruction. He called for a squire to saddle his horse and prepare his armor. The Solarans were marching to war. General Frederic met with Commandant Krilon for the first time since he was dispatched to raid Ironclad territory. They planned for a show of force and and complete and total annihilation of the small forces gathered at Lincoln. The Kylenians - or Hugoites, now - had been completely ravished by Solaran and Populist armies and were basically a non-factor. The Populists had been hurt by the Solarans and Hugoites as well, and they were extremely short on numbers and training to begin with. At high noon, the Imperial Solaran Army descended on the village of Lincoln. Archers from the ramparts felled some soldiers, until they themselves were dispatched by crossbowmen and Solaran archers. Burning arrows and firestorms broke and burned through the gate and walls, as the Solarans swept through, with Jehan Sol in their midst. Bloody urban fighting began to break out, as the cavalry was quickly rendered useless, and men jumped down from their horses and drew their swords. The Populists fell back to the major merchant district in Lincoln, erecting hasty barriers and the few mages that were there lobbed spells over the barricades. It didn't do much slow down the Solarans. Their superior training, numbers, and weaponry won the day. The last vestiges of Populist resistance left in the form of Linda, Taron, and their bodyguards fleeing back to the south, pursued by the remaining Solaran cavalry. The Hugoites, meanwhile, had withdrawn from Lincoln and established a camp, where they had entertained Karadas, who left with the best of them. The only Hugoists remaining were poorly armed and without any military training. The Solarans and fleeing Populists cut them down with no troubles. The Solaran push did not stop at Lincoln. Frederic marched his armies south, while Krilon marched his east, and they liberated more Populist and Hugoist cities to the rule of Jehan Sol the Benevolent. Stopping before they were stretched too thin, the Solaran armies pulled back to familiar defensive stances, albeit much more reinforced and further south (and east) than before. Jehan Sol (the Benevolent) was still astride his horse when he led some of the Solarans back to the interior of Solaran territory. However, when he dismounted, it was apparent that he had sustained a grievous wound. He was holding his side, where a sword had found its way between the plates of his armor. Hands stained blood red, he sought the attention of a priest, while the soldiers marveled at their leader. "Who among imperial candidates is like you, Jehan Sol? Who is like you, Jehan Sol, glorious in holiness, awesome in praises, doing miracles? With a new song, the ones you rescued praised Your name at Lincoln All of them in unison gave thanks and praised your rule, and said: 'Jehan Sol will reign for ever and ever.'" Jehan Sol emerged from the priest's tent haggard and doubled over, but he glowed with a radiance never before seen by his soldiers. Solaran soldiers were the only Imperial soldiers payed in full (and extra) during wartimes, due to the extreme profitability of the House Sol and its leader's acknowledgment of the military life. Now, after leading them in battle even with a wound, he became more than a man to them. He was a hero, and they would follow him to the ends of the earth. The regular Solarans, not just those in the military, gained immense respect for him as well. While his life meant so much to the Solaran movement, he had risked it all to rid the earth of the pesky Populists, and he had done it with class and honor. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that Jehan Sol the Benevolent was the only man for the Empire. I've been around 500-700 posts away from Alorael for about two years :P On the ikonboard I averaged 20 posts a day, but here I only average around 7.5.
