I thought the beginning of geneforge 4 was too much like the other games, in that while you are on the other side it just starts with "The shapers are attacking" instead of "The rebels are attacking". A bigger difference would've been nice.

There was an article in New Scientist about what alien life could possibly be, there are even theories that they could be gas-based or silicon-based.

It just gets tedious when you have to walk down a really long corridor, with hundreds of rats in the way.

It also makes the game repetitive in that, your just killing monsters so you can level up to kill bigger monsters and so on.

Yeah, but Oblivion gave you multiple possibilities of getting to X and Y. The stealth engine combined with the AI and day/night engine provided this enough, let alone the extra possibilities they deliberately added in.

But the other thread was about crafting. Besides this gives the subject it's own devoted thread.

Exactly, but the game should provide multiple possibilities.

At least that's what i expect from an RPG, for a hack'n'slash game of course, it's ok just to have one, linear possibility.

Yeah, but with the combat-based system, playing a stealthy character isn't viable. As you won't get far past level 1. Using a skill-based system fixes this.

Yeah, that would be good.

Just add more battle interactions, etc.

More interesting quests would be good too rather than just "bring X to Y"

I think this is a great idea as it means i could start pillaging villages straight away if i so choose. Much better than in most RPG's where i would have to endure hundreds of hours of tedium before the game deemed me worthy and allowed me to do so.

That's why i like TES series so much btw, is because you can do anything right from the start.

Haha, i was just giving my opinion.

It is ultimately up to Jeff whether he makes them freeware or not.

Sort of, but it makes the entire game based around combat and turns it into a mindless hack'n'slash of sorts.

IMO, the traditional way of getting experience points, killing hundreds of enemies, is boring, tedious and even more so when you're doing it to train your potion-making skill or something unrelated to combat.

IMO, it would be best to make it so as you use a skill you get experience points in that skill and so only level up skills by using them. This prevents the tedium of grinding.

OK, i agree that crafting might not suit a game like Avernum.

But I still think 'living' AI and a day/night engine, so the AI go back to their homes and sleep, etc. would be good.

I suppose, but it's not strictly 100% profit if you take into account admin. fees and shipping prices, etc.

I still think they should be released as freeware, as it would help to get new fans hooked.

I just think the thieving system should be improved to make it more fun. In order to do this, Jeff could add a day/night system and good AI so the AI go back to their homes at night-time.

I never said Oblivion was strategic.

But it's combat was enjoyable, maybe it could've been better (dismemberment, etc.) but it was good.

I think Avernum should keep the battle system the way it is, i like the strategy, but it would be nice to have bigger battles, like in an army or something.

But i think more should be added to Avernum like moving AI, a night/day engine, stealth engine, etc. as it would add much more gameplay and make it a much deeper game.

Exactly, but i still think that new features such as a day/night and stealth engine should be implemented. I mean where's the harm? I would rather have new features than just another run-of-the-mill fantasy game. In fact i would even prioritize gameplay and features over plot.

Exactly, but i think many people might be put off by it being shareware, and also it's a cheap way of getting people to enjoy the series so they will buy the newer games.

I mean, Jeff can't be turning much of a profit with the prices as they are.

I think it would be a good idea to release the older games as freeware. Quite where the line is drawn for old and new is up to Jeff, but i think it would really help to advertise the newer games and the works of SpiderWeb Software.

True, i guess it is a staple aspect of RPGs.

But i don't think it should be limiting on the the possible opportunities with in the game. I mean you could always have places where it's easier to steal, and battle where it's easier to kill. But then we're back to boring, repetitive gameplay. Bugger.

EDIT: But Jeff has stated that in Avernum 5, we won't start as Noobs so it'll be interesting to see how he tackles it.
