I never did any testing on it, but I never really noticed a huge difference in my dodge rate late in the game with and without Enduring Armor. By no means does this say that it does not do that, but I believe its effect is small.

Blades Scenario Chat in Blades of Avernum

Hello, for those of you unaware, the Lyceum (glower at ezBoard) has an easy to access chatroom. This place is currently doing little but collecting cyberdust and growing digital cobwebs. I propose we should try to set up a weekly, perhaps biweekly chat for those interested in Blades of Avernum.

This would be a good way to bring prospective designers and players together to share ideas, innovations, and offer suggestions for what the community wants to see in their scenarios.

Now, it is impossible to please everyone as this is a global board. I will propose a time and see if people may be interested. Please feel free to comment on this. If there is interest in different times, please state and we can try to work with this.

I propose 10 pm EST on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Does this work for people? Please comment.

I don't know why you would want a Drakon, overpriced and not overly good. Gazers are so much more effective at bringing destruction. Rotghoths are even better.

Seriously, Dikiyoba is getting tired of this "why third-person?" discussion. And Dikiyoba still can't understand why talking in third person is so odd. Do you have to be a moderator to do odd things without comment?

Edit: Grammer.

No, you just have to be the first one here to do it or it looks tacky. Come up with something more original.

Sorry. That was just too tempting to resist. Actually, Dikiyoba wonders why people find it so odd. It doesn't seem too odd to Dikiyoba. Dikiyoba comes from a place where using third person for oneself is a rather common.

What place is that, the mental hospital? :D

I've had similar trouble a long time ago. Try restarting the scenario (put the start location in a convenient place to test) and try triggering the node again. See if that works.

Also, are you sure you have specified everything in the init_quest node correctly?

1) The suggestion that Alien or Starcraft is a "pretty good guess" should be rephrased as "a wild guess". As I said before, the sample size for a large scale evolution of intelligent life experiment is exactly 1, far too few to know how likely any specific kind of life might form.

2) It is quite probable that planets like ours exist. How probable it is that life like ours evolved depends on the laws of chemistry that are far beyond our ability to understand.

3) The "theory" about Mars you suggest is not a theory in a scientific sense, it is a hypothesis; a theory is something supported by a wide body of scientific evidence. Ozone has little to do with temperature control of a planet, ozone serves to absorb certain frequencies of light, namely ultraviolet. Massive amounts of ultraviolet would not cause massive oxidation on a planet. That and there would be no 'big boom' due to that.

Oh lord, Stareye...

1) In case anyone ELSE reads this like I'm trying to make a scientific study out of it: I'm merely pondering possibilites. Sorry... I didn't mean to have an imagination.

2) Again, I never said it was "probable". I simply stated it's a "possibility".

3) I won't go into how uptight you're being about this, but I will say this: O3=flammable, yes? Light a match in a room full of O3. You'll get a 'big boom'. (If not, then here, I'm sorry I took a shot). If you thought I was referring to the Big Boom, then shame on you. And besides, I didn't come up with it.

The problem is there are plenty of people who WOULD actually take such things seriously. Consult the late night radio talk show Coast to Coast AM, it's full of all sorts of drivel way more radical and unbelievable than this. However, people still tend to believe it.

Imagination is a good thing, but it is not the end all to human inquiry. I know plenty of people with good imagination, but do not go anywhere because their ideas stay wild ideas.

Uptight, perhaps, but it is my job as a scientist to fight misconception and ignorance about the universe. I do not mean to quash your imagination, but I do mean to put a disclaimer and present the truth on relevant issues.

Misuse of the word "theory" is also a bit of agitation to me as there is a large misconception of what a theory is in a scientific sense. From that you get the "it's only a theory!" junk arguments that are pervasive in the fight to preserve scientific integrity in American classrooms.

Carbon, if I recall, is the name of the runtime environment on OS X. It pretty much handles running the application. To carbonize means to make it suitable for the Carbon runtime environment.

You shouldn't have to move the file I believe. You should be able to open it directly in the folder with all the other scenarios. At least that's how it works on the Mac.

There is a favorite theory of mine out there, which I love using to scare my girlfriend: the whole thing about us actually being from Mars, but destroying the ozone layer due to careless industry (or whatever) led to the charring of the world (hence the red, rust-like surface). Those smart enough escaped before the 'big boom'.

That or DooM 3 was right.

Thralni is correct about what I meant:

begintownscript;

variables;
short i;

body;

beginstate INIT_STATE;
set_name(6,"Prophet");
break;

beginstate START_STATE;
break;

beginstate EXIT_STATE;
break;

beginstate 10;
if (get_flag(0,0) == 0) {
force_view_center(25,21);
relocate_character(0,23,23);
relocate_character(1,24,23);
relocate_character(2,25,23);
relocate_character(3,26,23);
force_instant_terrain_redraw();
pause(4);

text_bubble_on_char(6,"");
text_bubble_on_char(6,"There was once a");
force_instant_terrain_redraw();
pause(4);

text_bubble_on_char(6,"");
text_bubble_on_char(6,"terrible conflict between");
force_instant_terrain_redraw();
pause(4);

text_bubble_on_char(6,"");
text_bubble_on_char(6,"sliths and nephil.");
erase_text_bubbles();
force_instant_terrain_redraw();
pause(4);

force_view_center(33,22);
i = 7;
while (i <= 26) {
set_character_pose(i,2);
i = i + 1;
}
force_instant_terrain_redraw();
pause(4);

set_flag(0,0,1);
message_dialog("What a good story!","Now leave to the south!");
end();
}

break;
This is the way I would write it and it usually works. It's also easier to see for debugging. I read through line by line, and couldn't find anything obvious, but I have a couple comments:

1) Avoid using flag 0,0 its use tends to be troublesome in BoE and I have suspicions about it in BoA.

2) A pause of 4 might be a bit too short, keep in mind that 4 means 0.4 seconds which is quite fast. I would recommend 10 for non-native English speakers. Ideal would be allowing the user to set cutscene speed. Consult the abilities of Bahssikava and some of TMs scenarios to understand the implementation.

3) The end() command is a bit redundant unless you have more coding you are not showing us in this state. You can probably eliminate it.

Oh yes, sometimes text editors will create goofy characters at the beginning of a file for purposes of keeping track of things. I would suggest using the simplest text editor you can find for this sort of stuff.
