You do realize that this skews the rating upwards by an insane amount? I mean, you do notice that nobody sane would buy a game whose demo they would rate at 2.1, right? Oh wait, you finished Homeland, sorry.

I've played it for an hour. You'll need a damn good shrink to bring out the repressed memory though.

2.0 for trying to be Diablo (which I'd give 4.5) and failing due to the crappy graphics and crappier interface.
Some credit for not crashing my computer upon installation. Although on second thoughts, that might have been less traumatizing.

There are a few spidwebbers who bought Homeland, and they might show up. Your score is only valid if you've finished the game. As for not buying a game if you hate the demo... Terror's Martyr hates Geneforge 3, yet he seems to have fully finished it.

Ah, Homeland. The Scourge Of Spiderweb, The Dishonor Of Every Veteran Spidwebber, The Weapon Of Game Destruction, The Misunderstood One. And yet, one of my favorite games.

Plot : Those who have only read the Player's Manual may at first think that Homeland's plot is completely ridiculous. Light vs. Dark, Bad Demons, and A Big Bad Guy named the Devourer of Souls. But you have to keep in mind that the story is pretty much told from the point of view of your average peasant, and the story is actualy quite different. In fact, the Legions of Light are no more than a bunch of killing machines with an IQ approximately equal to that of the dumbest Servant Mind in Geneforge. There are lots of good demons and skeletons, unlike Avernum : The Child Prophet, Estohan, Nassar the Deadlord, the IceBrother (well, maybe not exactly nice, but not really bad either), the Guardiennes, some skeletons in Necru and even Maglius who you have to fight anyway because he thinks you are Braccus. Poor Maglius. The more I played the game, the more I realized that the plot was actually much more complicated than it first appeared. In fact, you don't even know at the end of the game whether the Devourer is evil or not (though he's definetely not very nice), and Korr's decision to banish him was not necessarily a good thing (EDIT : The Devourer saves Korr's life twice, by the way. Once in the Void, sort of - although it's technically not in the game, we can guess it; and once in the cathedral - in the game this time, when Braccus attacks Korr). Things we do know, however, is that the Devourer is not a mindless killer and appears to be somewhat honourable. The universe is really well done in my opinion. EDIT : And yes, there's indeed quite a bit of humor in it, and it even manged to make me laugh. I don't think including Korr's girlfriend as a main character is overboard (and I don't think you'd say it's overboard if you knew about the Familiar spell and the Homeland 2 demo. But of course you don't.).

Gameplay : The manual is not nearly detailed enough, but once you understand how the game works, it shouldn't be boring. Well, maybe a little before you start getting spells. I really like the spells, some of them are very original, like the CallDragon or MindShatter spells. The missile spells should miss a bit less often, though. There should be a bit more gameplay balance at times (some parts are too difficult and the endgame is a piece of cake compared to Buolkaloch, in my opinion). The subquests were fun. The weapons and the elemental-based damage were really interesting as well. There are some minor bugs left, sadly; and I thought the game was perhaps a bit too short (although the world map is HUGE). Still, apart from that, pretty much everything else was good.

Graphics : I liked most of the graphics, especially the Dothraki, Maskim, and Dragon graphics. EDIT : And the 3D cutscenes were really nice, the closing cutscene even had a bit of voice acting. Some of the graphics (like the door graphics) are a bit crude, though.

Music/Sound : I loved the music, and liked the sound effects as well.

Overall : Loved it. 9.1

EDIT : I replayed it again since I wrote this review, and the missile spells don't miss as often as I thought. My character just hadn't been using them enough, so I'm raising the score.

SubTerra is one of the greatest Boulder-Dash-like games I've ever played. The engine is well done, and some of the levels are truly amazing and creative, like Laws of Physics. The humor is a nice touch. The level editor is also nicely done. On the other hand some levels are a bit repetitive, like Ray Tracing or Beeehive, and some levels are just too frustrating, like Nibbles (if you let your finger slip on the wrong keyboard key once, you've pretty much lost). I think there are still some bugs in the game, including in Castle Ethilo (I'm wondering if even Silver Harloe managed to finish it). Still, a great game for those who like logic puzzles.

8.9

TM was banned? Again? That would be the third time, geez. And I don't think he really deserved it this time. I hope he was not 'indefinetely' banned.

Whoops, I didn't know that. Should I just drop the lowest rating? 'Cause if I drop the highest, we have a serious problem. :P

EDIT : BainIhrno, the lowest score was the eight score, by the way (Kel said he'd give it a ten if we were rating BoE as a whole). And unless you change your mind about the way the rating works, this means that BoE's average score is still 10.0. Say yay everyone.

Interestingly, Dikiyoba noticed that several serviles change from female to male between G1 and G2.

From male to female too, like Learned Darian.

I am amazed by Drakefyre's cleverness, who obviously predicted that leaving this thread open would lead to a reconciliation that might not have occured otherwise.

Then again, maybe he just thought it would be funny to leave it open, whatever. :D

Okay... My apologies if I misunderstood anything. I still think there's no need to talk about Ed's behavior right now, since I don't think he has insulted anyone since his last apology. We'll simply see how he behaves if the future, and the administrators will take action if necessary. In the meantime, any comments to Ed should be sent through PMs, and this thread should be locked.

Thank you,

For posting goats, I doubt it. For posting goatse, definetely (PublicEnemyN°1, The Great Mister). Terror's Martyr also posted goatse at some point, I think, although I can't remember him getting banned for it.

Wow, while reading this thread I noticed that I had definetely missed something about Ed's former attitude. He said in a recent thread that he was going to improve, though, so there's no need to 'rub it in', if you will pardon my language.

Well, lookie here! We forgot Nethergate. I have mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, I love the spells, the plot, the subquests and the humor (I loved the talking skull and what happens if you refuse to give up the eye when you play as the Romans), and the originality; and on the other hand, the gameplay is very unbalanced at times, some things are just too odd (puzzle box, Sylak's trash, etc.), and some areas have too much combat (The Valleys of Annwn, for example).

EDIT : Whoops, forgot the score. So, um, 8.5.

I don't mind the fact that there are only 2 factions in Gf3. It's not like you could have had lots of factions in remote islands who are at war. As for the follower thing... The follower NPCs weren't all that useful in Gf2. Greta, on the other hand, is very useful; and even Alwan can be useful if you find a way to make him stay alive.

I think rating the engine is definetely fair. Rating scenarios and rating a full commercial game with its own engine is simply different.
