Once again demonstrating the truth of my favorite life axiom:

"People are weird."

As a reward for your sufficiently bizarre contributions, please to enjoy now this music as surrealism tribute to David Lynch's "Eraserhead" in which I locked myself out of my apartment.

If you could stomach that, drink your poison.

Warning: Rated D for Disturbing.

You will be able to go find out what is behind Monarch's Black Door at your leisure until you trigger the final showdown, which you cannot do until after fulfilling the quests in Northforge.

A Developer Question in Geneforge 4: Rebellion

I've never found Monarch difficult with any PC type, and that may be because I armor them pretty well, except for Lifecrafters. I also find that only a smattering of creations come out to fight and are only mildly distracting rather than a real threat of any kind. I have played the last several games on Torment, which feels more like what I wish Normal would be.

The Fens have some more challenging moments with the four Serviles around the hatch, the room full of hatching betas and glaakhs, the poisoning thahds and the inferno worms. Monarch himself still seems really anti-climactic after all you go through to get to him. I expected to be swarmed by creations or something highly desperate and dramatic.

Create Drayk

1) Train in Rebel Camp Aziraph

Score canisters in:

2) Wrecked Lab under the Golem's Fen
3) Monarch’s Realm

Cryodrayks rock. Go for it.

-S-

P.S. If you're all the way to Northforge, then there's not much left to do with Cryodrayks. You might find it more helpful to make Drakons. Or better yet...Ur-Drakons!

Don't feel bad about missing the hidden levers. I played my first two or three beta runs through Khyryk's cave without realizing that door south of him was openable, which confused me, because the scratching sound made it clear that we were meant to be curious and try to get in there.

What Random described is essentially what I do. Hasted battle mode is necessary. If I'm tough and gutsy enough or have a clutch of creations in tow, I might whittle away at the turrets and stray guards from around corners, but the actual run for the Essence-Infused Skin involves hiding just around the closest corner in the SW, hasting up to 12 Action Points, then running straight all the way up just around the corner into the hallway that leads to the box where the skin is. Same deal on the way out. You can also dart into the middle room and out again if you want to loot it also, while you are there.

All of the doors mentioned here can be opened. The Breeding Pits door is opened by a lever hidden behind the north wall of the building. Move your cursor over the area to light it up.

Kill Matala for the key to the doors in Matala's Workshop. Note I didn't imply this is easy.

Khyryk's door lever is hidden behind a nearby pillar.

Valeta No. 1, hereafter known as Valeta Purple is cooling her heels after her encounter with the rotghroth. Meanwhile, I have been experimenting with her light blue twin sister Valeta. Valeta Blue has just mopped up Chapter One. Valeta Blue was curious to find out what would happen if she focused heavily on Battle Magic and did not touch whole entire other categories of skills unlike her purple twin.

I gave her 8 Mechanics and 5 Leadership at the start, touching nothing else. With this kind of Mechanical ability off the bat, she used less Living Tools than ever, which means more money for other stuff all through the game. After that, I started pumping Battle Magic and got Leadership to 6 to get Spellcraft and Augmentation from Burkes. She's following the same strategy/reputation route as Valeta Purple.

At the end of Chapter One, she wound up with the following stats. I added one Spellcraft after Burkes. All else has been Magic skills, Mechanics and Leadership. She has felt pretty vulnerable, but workable. She feels more like the glass cannon a Lifecrafter tends to be. She died a lot more often if she took a hit. Her magic is notably more useful — even fireball has a decent punch. Searer has been doing a good job of taking out most normal critters with one strike at this point except for Spinecores and Plated Artilas. Now we have Ice Spray and we are about to become much more powerful in Chapter Two. Ice Spray is way chill.

IMAGE(http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/synergy67/V2-endch1stats.jpg)

A bit of gold and XP listed here were from doing much of the Eastern Checkpoint zone before remembering to stop and take stats, but not enough to have changed a level.

IMAGE(http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b292/synergy67/V2-endch1stuff.jpg)

Stats affected by gear:

Carnelian Gloves: Battle Magic +1
Girdle of Insight: Intelligence +1
Lucky Dice: Luck +1

I will post another report on Valeta Blue here after Chapter Two. If I am pleased with the results of this fiercely aggressive, but fairly wimpily defensive version of the Infiltrator, I will continue on with Valeta Blue instead of Valeta Purple.

For those of you who live in a cave... in General

I'm one of the people who went back to the stone age and lived in a virtual cave.

I lost power Thursday night and just got it back yesterday after four days of dark and cold. I just got my internet back today. I think the storm took out my DSL modem. Verizon wanted to rape me by making me pay $80 for a new one, so I am now a Comcast cable modem customer. Verizon blows.

I lived by candlelight, stayed permanently in many layers of hiking clothes, quickly used up my firewood (of which I happened to be virtually out, in a case of terrible timing), and happily had a landline phone, so I could at least talk to the few people I know who actually had an accessible phone. I woke up so freaking cold every morning, it was a brutal ordeal to get out of bed. The air was badly smoky from so many fireplace fires and generators going. It was amazingly dark and quiet at night. A tree fell down at the mouth of my road. Someone cut it up after one day. At least four people around here died from the storm, three by falling trees, and a woman who died in her flooded basement.

I went out in the storm Thursday night before it got bad and from a big hill behind my house counted about 15 bright green electrical flashes in an hour, each one representing a powerline shorting or a transformer exploding. The storm woke me at midnight with wind so bad, I thought a great big fir tree outside my window was going to come through my window. There are still quite a few people in farther out places who will be without power for days more. One million homes and businesses were without power in King County initially. I saw a lot of trees on powerlines. It's a mess.

I did a lot of walking, listening to my crank-up radio (60 cranks is good for about 15 or 20 minutes,) reading by candlelight, and talking on the phone. I looked up my sources on my biology/quantum physics point, and realized why I did such a poor job making the point well. There was not much else to do. Happily, I reaquainted myself with some of my neighbors and a certain young lady I have not been in touch with for four years, but have crossed paths with again through rather extraordinary circumstances.

I did wipe my posts for the sole intention of bringing a ridiculous and unfortunate discourse to a screeching halt. And it worked pretty good, ya think? It's a debate I never intended or cared to create with a brief, casual statement I initially made, but I let myself get sucked in unwisely. I'm an optimist. I keep thinking something more meaningful and enjoyable will come of my efforts.

To my credit, I decided to let it all go in less than 24 hours this time, so I enjoyed another opportunty to test and exercise my self-control and discretion. It's anyone's choice to assume or believe my motivation was cowardice in wiping my posts. I'd ask, when has anyone around here known me to back down from my convictions or apologize for my perspectives?

I have at times apologized for my inability to remember all my details with razor-sharp concision and recollection, and to put things in terms that 20 year old science majors and debate-team jocks can stomach. When you are 20, in or fresh out of college, you know everything, and typically in very black and white terms. Youth are full of knowledge, but lack wisdom and perspective only years can bring. And that's okay. It's just the cycle we all go through in life. Conversation typically becomes much more measured and thoughtful another decade or two into life.

There's a hella lotta left-brain, young, male energy here, and I see it in that sense as a place very out of balance with the world as a whole and life as a whole. By that, I mean it is a skewed environment and reality. It's a subset of a subset. It's fine for what it is.

Internet dialog, debate, bluster, brain-flexing, and virtual prowess all add up to less than nothing in the real world. It all goes into a big black hole, but it feels like it's been something. The car's on the blocks and the wheels are spinning. It's a flight simulator, perhaps, but you never go anywhere driving it.

Please feel free to note that this is an admonition and reminder to myself as much as—if not before—anyone else.

SoT - It sounds like for some reason, using a beta save is hosing you, though I'm not sure how that would work. Jeff may have added the second skin found here later. It sounds like you have found the right chest with the 4 Mechanics, even if that has been bumped up to a higher difficulty subsequently.

Here is a picture of my PC opening that chest:
