Well, what I wrote about Homeland is mainly based off of my my own experience (about 3 hours) with the game, and, I admit it, what others have said about it. At any rate, it's an oddball game not worthy to be paid for when true CRPG classics are so numerous.

Who says Avernum 5 has to have turn-based movement? :)

It won't ruin the Avernum 'feel', I can promise; not if he brings back secret doors, torhces/spells for lighting, and elevation.

Kind sir, I didn't say a word about Dungeons & Dragons or its magic system :)

D&D has been d20-system ever since 2000, true, but it is not synonymous with the system itself. The d20 rules are extremely customizable (particularly a feature such as spell systems) and FYI, most d20 fantasy games that aren't D&D do not use the spell slot system. I know of many Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, furthermore, that run on spell points or something akin to a freeform system. The way Mr. Vogel likes to set up the spells, skills, and ability features in his games, IMO, would transfer very smoothly to d20.

Just a few of the sounds and item graphics from the original Exile, IIRC, are still left over in Avernum 4.

Your argument against sprite animation completely breaks down, I think, when you consider that all four Geneforge games have accomplished exactly what I am talking about with sweeping success.

And you may like having only four in a group (4 or 5 is the preference I have, myself), but that doesn't mean that a niche of people wouldn't like the feature the be there as an option, as many apparently did when playing Exile.

Consult a walkthrough; there's almost no good replacement for it, and nothing exceeds the sheer amount of access to information that it provides you with. Here:

Funny, the general consensus is that Homeland:TSON stinks on ice, with terrifically horrible music, graphics, combat, plot, and just about everything else. It's riddled with every type of bug. You might playing or paying for ANY other CRPG out there, be it the Elder Scrolls series, NWN, Ultima, Might and Magic, or Jeff Vogel's games for that matter. Ironic thing, life is. ;)

Actually, Jeff should use the d20 system. It's free, accessible to anyone, has a virtually limitless online community, tremendous customization, and, whoever wishes to admit it, is the best damned P&P system in existence.

Actually, it would be awesome if his new setting was Asian and oriental-themed, using a somewhat Geneforge-like engine, with four party members a la Avernum series, a little more action-rpg-ish than any of his previous games. Highly mythical and captivating in its art direction rather than historical. A lot of daemons, spirits, and oni. Classes such as martial artist, ninja, shamans, soldiers, mystics, and assassins. Possibly with only humans as a playable race.

$$$ Don't say you came up with the idea yourself, ol' Jeffie :D $$$

My Suggestions for Avernum 5:

Bring back secret doors! Jeff already said he's doing this, but even then I couldn't stress it enough; Exile/Avernum isn't the same without them.

No more Recycling! Recycling is good for the environment and the planet, but not in videogames. Avernum 5 shouldn't re-use any of the same graphics from any previous games except for the sprites and a select number of environmental graphics. To a lesser extent, ditto for sound. It's unthinkable that Jeff's newest games still use graphics and sounds from the original Exile!

Animate! This is 2007, yet having timed-animating sprites was standard issue for the most low-end games of 1997. You did it with Geneforge, and, as far as I can tell, you can surely pull it off nicely with Avernum 5. Oldbies might complain upon seeing an animating PC/NPC in their Avernum game, but they've got Exile 1-3 and Avernum 1-4 if they love it so much.

More than 4 people! This isn't strictly necessary in my mind, but I liked how in Exile you could have a nice, big party of up to six (though five was my sweet spot), and wasn't too crazy about the maximum of four adventurers in the Avernum remakes. It stuck around for game #4. Raise the bar for Avernum 5, Jeff?...I can always dream.

And what's up with Jeff not answering the questions on this thread lately? :P

You people perplex me. I'm threatened for posting nothing but now the topic is ok because people are posting nothing in a conversational way?

For some godforsaken reason, this forum thread would've probably started perfectly legit if I posted a pic of a llama or a ferret and then said a phrase in bold psuedo german (like this: GIU HUOTAG NOOP MEEPLERS!? ) It may take me a while yet to "get" the RWG forum, as it's bizarre rulings are dictated by a false diety that formerly programmed mediocre games that ascended beyond the mortal realm.

More than agreeably, what's spam here and what's an intelligent stupid comment teeters on a damn fine line.

Eh, i've always disliked the general boards with a searing passion. At least the RWG boards are always good fun where everyone gets along. The General boards just make you feel like a fool for what you believe in.

Eff em.

Mario 64 is not an RPG in any sense and N64 is still a tad new and a tad illegal to emulate ATM, especially sicne the game was rereleased on DS.

If you're looking for a superb online experience, get Guild Wars.

ANd you can guarentee the all-knowing RWG cult grabs that extra 10% of crap (twice for sureness, no less), ending up with a 110% knowledge of crap. Anyone that is normal is crappy, in their eyes of course.

Not to bypass the unforseeable crap values of dung Beatles.

Crap.
