I don't think it would be all that hard to eliminate the C word from the collective consciousness. If there are fines for saying or writing the word, and books are modified to say "Instanbul" instead, it could only be a matter of time before people forgot how to pronounce/spell it.

Which raises the question of whether infected people would still die from hearing it pronounced badly or seeing it spelt wrong. And also what the effect of a heavy accent or bad handwriting would be. Maybe they'd only have mild chest pains.
