quote:Odd. Re-reading, now, I notice that Alorael wrote the same thing as I had once read, that "milliard" meant 10^6, "million" 10^9, and "billion" 10^15, according to the British system. However, I notice that somewhere after that, Aran said something rather different, that "milliard" simply intercedes between a million and a billion. Evidently I had things backwards. It should be noted that every source I've found for "milliard" also indicates that "thousand million" is completely acceptable and interchangeable, so one could very well say "one hundred thousand million" according to the long scale. Also, if one needed to refer to 10^15, I'm not sure I could take a person seriously who said "billiard" and meant a large number. quote:Feet are hardly even the worst offenders, too, as anyone knows who has ever wondered how many tablespoons/ounces/cups there are in a quart/pint/gallon. Unless they bake regularly or drink lots of different kinds of alcohol in different containers, Americans don't even know. However, "one hundred thousand million" seems excessive compared to "one hundred billion," and since one is unlikely to use anything above 10^15 very often, the ability to express 10^30 easily is less significant than the ability to express more reasonable numbers concisely. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I think that Jeff expects people to go with two melee fighters and two spellcasters, which has made my one melee fighter, one bowman, and two spellcasters considerably more effective. I'm trying out the "meat shield plus three ranged attackers" method, and so far I like it. The new death system makes this even more effective, since if my meat shield dies, I can escape with the rest of my party intact. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. If one of the first three sources isn't on, then you didn't solve all of the puzzles. I think you missed the middle one, the one with the entrance at (40,31). It is possible to solve the puzzles without hints or walkthroughs. Believe it or not, at least one person was hoping for another even more challenging beam puzzle later on in the game. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. It does eventually become correct, but the average time for that to happen is somewhere between five hundred and one thousand years. He's right: "one hundred one" is technically the correct way to say "101." Check any grammar book. Something being "correct" partly comes from how a language actually was spoken at the time when the language was standardized (which was some time ago, for English — how we actually speak now has nothing to do with it) and partly from what grammarians think makes sense. "It is I" is grammatically correct because grammarians liked it in relation to Latin, even though they could just as well have chosen "It is me" based on analogy with a Slavic language instead. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. We ALL normally reload when a character dies. The interesting thing about A4 is that you don't have to anymore. Now I try to finish the fight if at all possible and then retreat to a friendly town, whereas before it was an automatic reload. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. It mentions the top two interface changes: a seamless world — as has been noted before — and the "unconscious" innovation, which I think hadn't been mentioned yet. This is a huge change, and I like it quite a lot. The shades in the towns are also a very interesting (and different) touch. But I find the recycled graphics kind of annoying, and I hope as many of them as possible are filtered out before release. EDIT: I admit that I was annoyed at the movement system at first, but you get used to it. If you've never played GF, it may take a little longer to get accustomed to, but even then, I think you'll find it acceptable. Uh, there's more to the hint file than the paragraphs which are asterisked. Here's the relevant section of the walkthrough: quote:Basically, you need to redirect the alternating beam in the halls to hit the southern-most source. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I use each of the three units for different purposes. Soldiers are good for standing in the way, and archers sometimes need backup for defense. Knights are the only good offense, though. And roads can be pretty useful on rare occasions but most of the time are not needed. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Well, okay. Someone (Boots, I think) alerted me to an easier way to do this puzzle than what I have in the walkthrough, so let's see if I can give you that. Go to the library in the southeast and pull the lever at (46,43). then pull it back again. Go back to the room and place the only available mirror at (30,6). Go back to the library and pull the lever one more time. I think that works, at least. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! I have heard of this happening but have never been able to reproduce it. Do you have a save file from which you can consistently make this happen? If so, please send it to me with exact instructions about how to make the demon do this. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. It would probably be easier just to write the algorithm yourself. There's also the "Party Location" special ability that I included, right next to Set Cutscene Speed. That, combined with the descriptions in the walkthrough (in HINTS.txt), ought to be enough to help you figure out what to do. If there's a specific puzzle you're having trouble with, though, you can feel free to name it. But I highly recommend going to the walkthrough first. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Probably your best bet is to learn BoA scripting, for which there are manuals. At that point, you can tackle GF scripting, which is undocumented. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I think it is telling that the town that I remember most in the AT, at least on a visual level, is the top floor of the Empire Archives, with the frozen floors. Give me colors, but exquisite details are not necessary. Also, the most beautiful towns in BoA all make extensive use of hills. That said, the graphics that are finally filtering in to replace the gross temp beta graphics are pretty nice. I think A4 will look not half bad. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! I made it, and it's supposed to be fairly long and a little challenging. :P Note also that you can strip your lead character of any weapons, potions, or other items he may have. That should reduce the damage he does considerably. I think the problem is that you're trying to use alchemy, when the potion-making ability isn't normal alchemy. It's a special ability. Hit U for "Use Ability," but instead of A for alchemy, go to N for Make Potions. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
