In Exile games there are a few areas in which items are saved when you leave, but most of the time leaving erases all items left on the ground. The exceptions are items that have not yet been picked up and items flagged as "always here," which reappear whenever you enter the town. —Alorael, who can recall a few useful items that were always there. They're usually sources of modest wealth when sold, but every little bit of gold helps in the beginning. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Diablo 2 is hardly the only game (or even the first game) to have a continuous world. If anything, I'd suspect that Jeff was inspired by MMORPGs that tend to do the same. The real Diablo style in A4 is in the heavy emphasis on combat over plot or dialogue, really. Geneforge strikes me as only slightly like Fallout, but it's a better match than Diablo/A4. I guess I can't think of any other turn-based and real-time games, but that's not much to go on. The heavy emphasis on factions and on odd lifeforms can be stretched into correspondance, but I think the links are more casual than causal. —Alorael, who could stand to see more Planescape: Torment thrown into Jeff's games. That's another best game of all time and one that Jeff agrees about. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Speaking for one section of the game and not the whole, I can say that he has successfully made group tactics pretty much essential. —Alorael, who did not say group combat was essential. It's almost essential, but it's not. Jeff still believes that those who really want to play a coward with a full pack of living tools and a silver tongue should be able to, and he still believes that it should be really painfully hard. This time, however, you can do it with friends! Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

In A4 you get to see that nephils get along fairly well with humans and so do sliths, although there's still a little bit of dislike for the lizards. —Alorael, who doesn't think crazy cultist sliths or Khrosth and his gang count for much. There are human cultists and human bandits too and more of them. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Wasting your demon-killing arsenal on the demons there might be a mistake. It's quite possible to kill them without it and you may wish you had more bolts later when you're facing Garzahd. —Alorael, who would recommend training at least one archer for that very fight unless you really, really like Repel Spirit. I can easily see young shapers giggling in the corners of the lab when their stern master finds his menacing battle alphas coming out of the vat with lime green splotches. And I'm sure those same apprentices eventually slip a little pyro in the roamers. —Alorael, who can see the now very upset stern master then requiring his giggling young proteges to clean up the mess. With their robes. Without a chance to wash those robes afterwards. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I'm content to have my name forever associated with chitrachs that aren't clawbugs. —Alorael, who is also content to have his name associated with illicit weaponry, unprovoked attacks on people whose only crime is travel on foot, petty theft, consumption of imaginary drugs, and unfortunate behavior best left to ancient people who could get away with things that aren't accepted anymore, weak as men are now. Your chances of being an official shaper in GF4 are small. Your chances of being a plucky sort with a large number of enemies after you is somewhere around 110%. —Alorael, who thinks the right tone is set by what he thinks will eventually be the demo. Retrograde maneuvers are very important in strategy and in tactics when you've got an empire after you and no caves to hide in with unexpected bug-eyed allies. Overselling is the fault of the consumer, not the provider. It may also account in some part for the obesity epidemic. —Alorael, who sees no "cordially" in Djur's dislike. Djur does what he does very enthusiastically. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Even better considering that at the time you posted I'd already changed it. Thank the UBB for delays! —Alorael, who never caught the bag of holding, but the other ones were noticed. It's not a question of killing. It's a question of doing it with style. —Alorael, who found that that impulse served him poorly in G4. It is remarkably possible to end up in an increasingly large brawl with explosive enemies. Sooner or later it becomes time to call it quits. Sure. Sooner or later schools have to invest in new textbooks and then they're usually up to date. That may happen every few decades, but it happens. —Alorael, who also knows of schools that stay up to date. The textbooks may not always be, but the better teachers point out the problems and fill in the gaps. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If you really want to, you can start making many elements of Spiderweb games questionable. In fact, with enough effort, you can make just about anything questionable. —Alorael, who never hopes to have to choose between Angband's rod of probing and Geneforge's rod of succor. Unlock gets a boost from Tool Use, but I successfully had two separate characters as my mage and my priest and still managed to unlock just about everything up to and including Athron's door. —Alorael, who can't explain why living tools are funny. Just hang around on Spiderweb long enough and satori will strike. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I can accept it. After all, we get dwarf planets now. It's only a matter of time before we start cultivating bonsai planets for those with the taste for such things. —Alorael, who wouldn't mind a bonsai planet. Maybe it could even orbit him. I'm not quite sure what you mean by tile map or tile graphics. A4 is just as much a matter of isometric square grids as A1, A2, and A3. Even Geneforge is actually tile-based, although it's less obvious. If you mean graphics, well, the terrain is still tiles and everything else is still sprites. —Alorael, who doesn't see what the Anama and the Church of the Divine Lucre have to fight about. The latter has no mages and the former doesn't particularly care about money. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

He thinks that MM is a stealth admin, as he already said. Of course he wouldn't say even if he were, so there's no way to know. —Alorael, who is sure the mod board is only a front. Behind the innocence of the kwilting korner and tea samplers lurks the admin board and its ceaseless power struggles. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
