As a general rule, I'll watch movies based on books I've read. If I haven't read the book there is a good chance that I haven't read it for a reason and the movie isn't worth seeing anyway. The books are better, so they should be read first. Books based on other media range from mediocre to garbage. I'll watch the movie and ignore the book entirely. —Alorael, who knows there are exceptions to these general truths. Those are rare enough that he's comfortable letting critical reviews and friends' opinions point out these few outlying cases. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Much of the humor and charm of that image vanishes once you realize that the creature is not holding onto a string and that the creature is not, strictly speaking, a squirrel. —Alorael, who can't believe his authority was so cavalierly usurped. More precisely, he can believe it but he had vague hopes that maybe it wouldn't be. He should be used to the disappointment by now. Physics that has room for strange and charm has room for love. Color me another evolutionary psychologist, though. Romantic love is a cause, effect, and symptom of how we mate. Or maybe it's a crazy societal meme. Who knows? It's most definitely real, though, and it's still real after one love fades and you find another one. That kind of love is completely different from love of family or friends. There are several ways to justify those by evolution too, which I have already done elsewhere to widespread disgust. —Alorael, who doesn't see how calling something an adaptive trait honed by generation after generation of evolution makes it less meaningful. Love is chemicals and beauty is certain patterns of light hitting your retina, but that doesn't devalue either one. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The First Expedition was made up of explorers sent by the Empire. The cities were built by undesirables banished to the cave. Any overlap would require more than just changing the timeline. It would require a point during which the Empire was trying to settle, which makes no sense because nobody wants to live in a cave. —Alorael, who will ignore the loonies who decide to live in caves in A4. They probably inhaled too much cave flora. [ Thursday, August 03, 2006 12:52: Message edited by: Al and the Beanstalk ] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I am aware of the humor in what I posted, yes. That said, I've seen claims both ways. "Another think" makes more sense, but I've yet to find a credible source either way. —Alorael, who settled on the solution of never using the phrase at all. Except when it's remarkably appropriate, as here. Had he world enough and time, he'd go on mangling phrases. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I haven't even seen trailers for the movie, I've never heard of the TV show, and I've only heard a few minutes of the BBC series. —Alorael, who liked the books, though. Even Mostly Harmless. There's a certain magisterial absurdity to them. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

China Miéville is extremely worth reading for industrial fantasy unlike anything I've ever seen elsewhere. He is, if nothing else, always good for a new anthropomorphic creature. (Cactus? Check!) —Alorael, who also recently reread Catch-22. Yes, it's still brilliant. He should look into getting the sequel. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Some people have some strange idea that banning is done for purposes of justice, fairness, or for the greater good. This is a common misconception, but it is nonetheless patently untrue. The admins ban people because they can. And they like it. Questions? —Alorael, who thinks that anyone who believes that Stareye believes in anything but chances to alternately glower and cackle madly has another thing coming. So it turns out that the anti-intellectual climate that is so pervasive in the world these days is just another facet of sexual repression. Yes, this is a posting game, but who can deny Thuryl anything? Certainly not me! —Alorael, who declares himself the uncontested arbiter of boredom. You can't argue, either, because he's uncontested. Would you? You haven't had a good fit in weeks, and I could use the entertainment. —Alorael, who still doesn't think that would make up for the lack of public outcry. Surely someone has the admins, hates the mods, hates Spiderweb, and hates haters. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Cognizance of a certain euphemism in the English language can actually make that line rather more sinister and unpleasant. —Alorael, who just excised a post by TM. It may have altered his perceptions for a while. Carry on. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

He posted a large chunk of the Kama Sutra in TM's moniker thread, which caused errors in the thread and which does bad things to the boards in general. He was booked for two counts of lewd and licentious material and one count of obnoxiousness. —Alorael, who does have to say that this is the only banning of a generally stable poster that has not resulted in an outcry. It's nice, actually. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Checkers with explosions? I can see it. —Alorael, who means no slight to the noble game of draughts, which is not actually that simple. It's just close to it and he has a personal grudge against any game that can obligate him to move certain pieces. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I'm pretty sure getting drunk was possible in previous Spiderweb games. As recently as A3/BoA? I confess to not spending much time imbibing alcohol or watching for the little usable button after determining that it could be done. Food gives you a small amount of health in the Geneforges and A4, but it's still largely useless. Some items are just there to provide detail. Rocks and sticks and plates and mugs and, yes, a lot of the dubiously useful food items and throwable rocks. Not everything needs to be good for your adventurers. —Alorael, who has never been in such urgent need for cash that he'd be willing to run around reselling everything. Iron bar and book retrieval quests are one thing, but turning Avernum into a trading game like Escape Velocity is another. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

You have that backwards. No one in their right mind would move into a bunch of caves full of ravenous monsters. Fortunately, the Empire was quite willing to throw people in by force. Cities came somewhat later. —Alorael, who imagined the first few years were quite exciting. People probably came in three types: powerful adventurer, bewildered new arrival, and messily dead. I never did really come to like Civ 3, but I still consider Civ 2 a wonderful game that was made even more wonderful in the apparenty largely overlooked game Alpha Centauri. —Alorael, who also still likes the Asteroids clone Asterax. It seems strange to him that the simple concept of having improvements for sale between levels never caught on in other Asteroids variations. It's been a while since I touched GC with a ten foot pole, but I remember it as moderately easy. The real lack of difficulty comes from AI with holes you could drive a starship through. You can have the computer waste all its time, energy, and resources and then clean up at your leisure. —Alorael, who considers it somewhat easier than Starbound 2 with the difficulty turned allt he way down. You can find hexagonal bars and bent hexagonal bars. The bent ones are in the River Fort and don't work. The unbent one is among the hydras. —Alorael, who now can't remember if A2 has special item bars or bars that are regular items. E2 definitely has regular bars, and you can sell them for some handy cash thanks to E2's lack of a weight limit. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Truffle Days! Not everyone has to end up dead. It also occurs to me that the only evidence of total slaughter comes from moderately unreliable sources. All the leaders are presumably dead because the First Expedition's artifacts are all left around corpses. Nobody bothered to track down every single cannon fodder soldier sent down. Some could have survived somewhere in Avernum. Some could have made it to the Final Gauntlet before it was the Final Gauntlet and become some of Valorim's first settlers. —Alorael, who only assumes that the tunnel comes out in Valorim. There's not much evidence either way, actually. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
