In the first version of Nethergate Soul Lance was a town mode only spell. This would be acceptable, though odd, but for the fact that you cannot target enemies in town mode. The spell was thus useful but entirely unusable.

—Alorael, who at least thought it was some nice variety. Light in Exile was always usable but entirely useless.

I think writing out as much as possible is nice on forums where most people probably aren't programmers. But not much of most!

—Alorael, who challenges anyone to write a pretty post count program in TECO. Triple points if you do it braincensored instead.

Magic, of course.

—Alorael, who has found that magic eyes are much easier to see when you're extremely tired. There's nothing like being unable to focus your eyes to make you, well, unfocus your eyes.

Look at this thread for scripts that handle stats.

—Alorael, who thought the cap was set up to prevent you from raising the stat higher than 30. If you cheat to boost it more it probably still has the usual effects. Infinite essence is a beautiful thing.

Goodbye topics aren't the same without Alec and TM. Actually, this thread demands mockery. You've admitted you're not really leaving!

—Alorael, who will miss Aran anyway. It's hard to be the bot that leaves the nest and gets no supervision or revision for a few weeks.

The vagina dentata defense was deemed ineffective. Organic enhancements are still undergoing testing.

—Alorael, who can see why slowing an attacker would help someone trying to flee. And wouldn't you feel more secure when carrying concealed shaped weapons?

Hopefully. I'd settle for actually being able to use all the spells. Soul Lance was a great letdown. How did an entirely unusable spell slip through betas?

—Alorael, who thinks Nethergate did fairly well on spell usefulness. The Beast Circle isn't great, but nearly all of the War, Healing, and Craft Circle spells have their moments to shine. Spirit is hit or miss, but at least it's exciting. Nether spells are the ironic exception.

It's all a matter of which tower we visit, Aydin's or Erika's. I'd be excited to see either one.

—Alorael, who would like to know what happened to Aydin. Most of the powerful mages from earlier Avernums are explained in A4, but Aydin has only an answering machine in A2 and nothing after that.

And I like the grotesquely overpriced +3 in Gale. But usually I end up using plain old magic waveblades.

—Alorael, who can't even remember what other enhancements are offered. There's probably defense somewhere, some +1 and +2, and other not terribly exciting things.

Asking Linda for registration codes strikes me as a bad idea. No, I have no evidence whatsoever to back up such a claim. I just think minimizing contact is a good idea.

—Alorael, who certainly doesn't think sending an email now could hurt. What could Jeff possibly want more after a vacation than an overflowing inbox?

I'm able to see them, but only sometimes. I can't figure out when or why.

—Alorael, who does cringe when he hears nails on chalkboards. It's not physically painful, but it's very irritating. Some people find the sound of styrofoam squeaking equally unbearable, but it's not as bad for him. What really gets him, though, is the sound of someone crumpling up a napkin.

I've used the summoning spells occasionally when desperately in need of meat shields, but I basically agree.

[Edit: I don't even use Miraculous Revival much. Lesser healing spells are usually adequate and cheaper.]

—Alorael, who thinks Hero of Old should have been the Nether spell for War. The fact that you can start with it is just plain broken. (Yes, it's literally broken because you can only do it through an oversight, but still!)

From would-be mod to would-be remembered. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

It's a reward in Dillame. I think you get it from Mouawad for retrieving the Heart of the Kiln.

—Alorael, who is absolutely certain that's it's a quest reward for doing some job for the Shapers in Dillame.

Suggestions for a nOOb? in Geneforge 4: Rebellion

I'm not one of the number crunchers, so my numbers are fuzzier than they might be. I think my advice is sound, though.

All the classes are playable, but servile and lifecrafter are the favorites. In general, you don't need to put as many points into melee as you might think even for a melee-oriented class, and you really don't need many points in shaping. Magic, on the other hand, needs its skills raised. (I like to have at least five points in a shaping skill if I'm going to be shaping with it, but others disagree.)

It's good to put some points in Mechanics and Leadership right from the beginning. Six points or so will serve you well, and eight are fine for most of the game as long as you have some equipment to boost it for the tough spots. Don't worry, you'll find that equipment.

If you're shaping, you can take your pick of creation types. In previous Geneforges it was best to choose one type (fire, battle, or magic) and stick with it, but in G4 it doesn't matter as much. I've gotten the best mileage out of fire, but magic is nice too. Melee is a bit more limited.

Most of your money will come from picking up everything that's not nailed down or under someone else's watchful eye and selling it. You can figure out what's worth selling at any given point in the game for yourself, but remember that plentiful items that aren't worth much alone can be valuable if you have enough of them.

—Alorael, who thinks that's all his advice for the moment. Really, you can just play and figure it out. As long as you're not on Torment difficulty the game is fairly forgiving of sub-optimal decisions. If an area consistently kills you it's more than likely that you shouldn't be there yet.

You haven't used the verb dalt at all. You just use the adjective.

How many charms do you carry around? in Geneforge 4: Rebellion

I keep them all, but some of the less useful ones get put into permanent storage. I'm also perfectly happy to dump a few charms here and there while clearing an area, pick up loot, return to a town to sell it, and then retrace my steps and retrieve my charms.

—Alorael, who would rather waste time looking for his Wisdom Skein than going back and forth between towns. It's a personal choice.

Exile is the only series in which you can equip two weapons.

—Alorael, who thinks that change was for the better. Ambidexterity is nice, but so is balance. Nobody needs a pair of flaming waveblades.

It's not an entirely reasonable rule, but it's a rule and we abide by it.

That said, modification of h*xes has contributed vastly to our understanding of the world of Exile/Avernum. We'd never be able to walk through walls and be sure that those unreachable rooms are empty without it!

—Alorael, who thinks Jeff could have at least gone to the trouble to put a few more, "What are you doing in here?" signs on the walls.

I was kind of hoping for Geneforge-esque multiple-ending vagueness.

"Nobody has heard from Rentar-Ihrno for a while. Not since she made a mess of Avernum a few years back. Hank says a bunch of adventurers killed her, but I heard from Fred that they handed her over to some other vahnatai for justice. I'm just glad she's not here anymore."

—Alorael, who can live with DEAD DEAD DEAD too. Now Avernum has a huge power vacuum, though. Without Garzahd, Erika, or Rentar, all the major players are lacking in stupendous mages. Solberg is nice and all, but he isn't the kind to move mountains.

It's still policy here, and you can always go through the source code yourself looking for malicious pieces. Assuming, of course, that you are fluent in whatever code is being used.

—Alorael, thinks this is just like Pandora's Box was for OS 9. Except probably with fewer references to unusually octopoid games.
