My only complaint about Ben's moniker is that it's a single long word. It distorts the space normally reserved for blabbering. You know, the space where you're reading this right now. —Alorael, whose name has an ae in it. It's like an ash going through trial separation. You can't go around mangling his name just because it's impossible to pronounce. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

So the capital isn't "Capital," it's "the Capital." —Alorael, who thinks the line has to be drawn somewhere. Prazac isn't just "the Empress," you know. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

That doesn't account for people who have large combined post counts when you add up all the posts they've made with several accounts, Aran. It's probably not a big difference, but it's a difference. —Alorael, who guesses that bumps someone (Alec?) into the 3000+ range. Either that or someone lied on the poll. Killing the dragons has no effect on the plot at all. You could even go through the game without ever encountering them. The room full of plague monsters is somewhat misleading, but talking with the dragons explains that they're interested in the plagues as well and have captured specimens for study. You have to kill a few of them to get the Beastslayer Blade, which I incidentally never used. —Alorael, who would appreciate spoiler notices before major spoilers like the one in Micael's post. Some people still don't know and may want to find out for themselves, although the way Pisst phrased his question made it seem like he already knew that the dragons weren't responsible. I'd guess longer. The number of very permanent stone cities and interconnected road networks suggests at least a century of occuptation. There's also the first university being established in Lorelei (I think), large areas of almost untouched wilderness, and so on. It probably hasn't been occupied for much more than a century. —Alorael, who is further puzzled by the fact that settlement doesn't seem to spread out from Blackcrag like it would if settlers came from the north. Krizsan and Sharimik have enough towns surrounding them that it looks like there may have been some coastal settlement as well. Either that or there have been people in Valorim long enough that the time between the first and last cities built is no longer noticeable. I'm also a fan of the random useless things strewn throughout Spiderweb games. Just because the games don't look like the latest overpriced offering from a bigger company doesn't mean there shouldn't be any nod to realism. —Alorael, who will thank you kindly for obeying the CoC and not using homophobic language. The alternative is neither thankful nor kind. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I believe you have to use a boat and land somewhere on the a shore north of the Honeycomb, probably by a secret passage, to reach Athron's cave. It's in A1 definitely, but I'm not absolutely sure it's still true in A2. —Alorael, who advises some fun landing and wall bashing. Those secret passages are always a joy. Just how many otakus do we have? No, never mind. I'm happier not knowing. —Alorael, who would like to fight the classical discrimination. If rock can be umpteen subcategories, why can't classical? Tchaikovsky doesn't sound like Telemann and neither one sounds much like Tallis. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Possibly, but since animals perceive color differently and can't talk about it, it would take some testing to figure it out. I'm sure someone has done it. —Alorael, who now wonders how much of color association is hard-wired and how much is societal. Sure, black may be evil and scary because stumbling around in the dark is scary, but why is blue peaceful, red passionate or angry, or yellow cheery? It's an easy puzzle game mixed with a slow reflex game and a tedious waiting game. What's not to love about Ocean Bound? —Alorael, who admits that he has no idea how to classify it. It doesn't stand out in any genre. Maybe it's a slightly more complicated aimless waster of spare time. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If stepping into an old argument doesn't suit you, make up a new name. Or make up another important city that isn't the capital. —Alorael, who disagrees with some others in saying that there's no reason that scenarios have to be in any way consistent in their treatment of the Empire. Just because the capital has been portrayed one way doesn't mean you can't set a conspiracy in a completely different capital. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

In all fairness, there's no reason to believe that Jeff would suck at RTS games or anything else. We have absolutely nothing to judge by. There's also no reason to believe that he'd be any good, though, which is exactly why he hasn't tried it. —Alorael, who doesn't see any reason why a turn-based FPS wouldn't work. It would definitely be different, and it would be best if instead of pure turns it had small "slices" of regular FPS action, but it could work. The problem with reparations is that it is almost guaranteed to be unhelpful in the long term and not even very helpful in the short term. Poor people of any ethnicity tend to have trouble managing windfalls. At least affirmative action is a way to make sure aid is productive. That said, I still think affirmative action is the wrong way to solve the problem. A better system in general for helping the poor would go a long way and it wouldn't be such a charged issue. —Alorael, who has come to terms with the fact that he could lower his standard of living and give the extra money to charitable causes but doesn't. He would sell his computer, but only because he could earn the money to buy another (which he in fact intends to do soon). He would not give up all money earmarked for computer-related expenditures he ever earned. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Steroids are taken for lasting effect and have no addictive properties. Skribbane is taken for instantaneous effect and is highly addictive. —Alorael, who sees skribbane as a logical extrapolation of the current trend in coffees. Super stimulants that incidentally turn you into a drooling zombie are just what this busy world demands. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Starcraft isn't an action RPG. It's a pure real-time strategy game. Jeff addressed this very issue in one of his interviews. He said quite plainly that while it might be interesting to try, he isn't sure he could do it well and sell it. He knows he can make and sell RPGs. His curiousity and sense of adventure are no match for his bills. —Alorael, who certainly thinks the plot of E3/A3 might have worked better as a strategy game than as an RPG. If an army of golems faces an army of cockroaches, who will win? Would the troglos or the giants eventually emerge victorious in their struggle? Greek tragedies tend not to involve saving the world. The closest one is probably Philoctetes, which you could stretch into saving the Achaeans. Maybe. The comedies aren't any better, and we've already discussed the epics. I'd call the defeat of the titans more of a power struggle and self-defense than any sort of saving of the world. It's also not accurate to say that Kronus was the Dark Lord. He just wasn't Zeus. —Alorael, who once again hopes that Ben is joking. If you can't distinguish righteousness from God, you are a prime example of what made crusaders so scary in the Middle Ages and extremist fanatics in the Middle East scary today. I don't think sleep is understood well enough to decide whether dreaming is necessary and at what level of complexity it becomes so. If dreams can produce the results of stimuli that aren't physically present, are they necessarily a sign of either consciousness or intelligence? —Alorael, who would like to draw some dividing line at whether or not an organism can have an individual personality, but that can of worms is at least as large as consciousness. Humans have personalities. Do dogs and cats? How about gorillas and dolphins? Most evidence suggests so. What about those deer? Or fish? Or a single bee?
